100% agree, I feel the exact same way. Transformers, Mask, Robotix, Jayce and the wheeled Warriors... I wonder why they don't make such wonderful cartoons anymore. I'm 26, too, you know and I still love those cartoons. But all I see now on TV is stupid stuff like *mon etc. How come they can't come with something ingenious like Transformers anymore?

  2. Re:Fiber is still expensive on Wiring A New House? · · Score: 1

What's missing in the whole discussion on fiber wiring is the fact that firstly, you had better decide on the right type (single mode / multi mode) and the right connector standards (ST / SC / FCPC / E2000 et al). If you fail to define your needs properly, you're almost certain to choose the wrong type, because then the access equipment (hub, switch, modem, mediaconverter) comes with exactly the type of connector types you don't have installed.
In the case of an in-house installation for mostly computer networking needs, you should stick with plain cat5e. If you really fancy fiber, then go with multi mode fibers and ST/SC connectors, because that's what you will find on most equipment.

Well, just so you know, I'm running Windows 2000 Professional on a Dual-CPU P2 box, stuffed with goodies like UW-SCSI and redundant regulated powersupplies. And still it crashes. You're right however, there is no BSOD anymore, the box just freezes. What an improvement!

And no, I'm not doing crazy things on the box, I'm just running Office and AutoCAD for engineering tasks.

In fact, I had 2.2.11 running with SuSE 6.1 and after SuSE 6.2 installed its 2.2.10, all I had to do was to remove the soft-link to their kernel-sources and replace it with the one I had before. make dep bzlilo modules modules_install, and I had a perfectly running SuSE 6.2 based on kernel 2.2.11. No "nasties", no problems.

BTW, I have no idea why everybody keeps insisting that SuSE will only work with a SuSE-modified kernel. The only time I have a SuSE-kernel installed is right after a SuSE-upgrade. The next boot already happens with a standard kernel from kernel.org. Again, no "nasties", no problems.

Please be more specific than "suse sucks". I happen to like it very much for it's not-so-steep learning-curve and the wealth of programs on the 6 CDs.

OK, yast may not be everybody's taste. But I know from personal experience that it really comes in handy if you're a newbie without a clue. You can always turn off yast's hooks and edit any configuration file manually.

I really like SuSE's packet selection program, it doesn't overwhelm you with a hard-to-use interface (unlike Debian) while it still gives you all the proper information (unlike RedHat).

The best thing about SuSE are their support & hardware databases. They really take the pain out of installing new things on your Linux box.

Apart from that, I feel that the author has not understood the concept of open source software at all. I want my OS to be open source, not because I intend to hack at the kernel myself, but because I know that others (many thousands!) had a chance to do so and have in many cases done so! This is why open source software generally has better quality. Period.
