Yes, this, absolutely. I got stuck in a crappy situation once and had to sell my guitar. I didn't want to lose the muscle memory while I got things worked out so I wrapped a piece of cardboard with paper and drew a fretboard on it, marked notes, taped toothpicks under the fretlines and wrapped the whole thing in clear packing tape to prevent wear and decomposition from finger oils. When things got slow at work I'd break it out and jam. Good times.
A good analog does wonders. In this case you don't even need an analog, as you said they can just use a disconnected keyboard and start slowly.
I like where you're going with this. For extra points you could also have him patent the process and sue other educators who attempt similar demonstrations, in whole or in part.
Regardless of my beliefs, this is a matter of classification. Going full-on ostrich mode and pretending that these things don't exist is futile. Restricting TLDs is not going to stop people from doing what they want, that's what beheadings are for. You can't outlaw something without first classifying it.
Jailbreaking has added little to my user experience, but being able to display free memory and your IP and whatnot in the statusbar is convenient for mobile dev. It's also nice to be able to SSH into the machine, poke around in app data and SCP it off to your workstation for further pokery on a system with real software.
But yeah, hooray for supposed perfection, hypocrisy inherent in the system, stick it to the man, lol@fanboyz!!11elevenoneone, etc.
I came here to say this. You don't have to bang your head against the wall trying to teach the unwilling. Apply to a junior/community college and teach people who actually want to be there, want it badly enough to pay for the privilege because they want to improve themselves. Sounds a lot more fulfilling to me.
You mean the one gesturing wildly and acting in a threatening manner? He was being an idiot, I'm surprised they didn't tell him to back off sooner.
Not that what these zap-happy fools did was right, but after seeing what they're willing to do it's really stupid to get up in their faces. Take their names and badge numbers, report them. Don't pace back and forth trying to talk shit to people who are obviously unreasonable and armed. The guy's lucky he was only threatened with the tazer.
One worry: I expect that whatever Yahoo does to avoid getting wiped out will be studied and emulated by other toolbar manufacturers, unless it is some kind of bug that hopefully MS will fix before final release.
I wouldn't worry about it, I'm sure Yahoo's toolbar is ignored intentionally. MS and Yahoo are buddies now, look at the Yahoo IM/Live Messenger interoperability.
I noticed that after extended use of a graphics tablet and Photoshop I would tap two fingers in quick succession on the bottom left corner of the sketch pad to hit ^Z when drawing on paper. Real life needs an undo key sequence, the interface sucks ass.
Yeah, it's been rebranded as Windows Live Spaces to fit into the Live Services. They don't allow you to customize the theme like you can on Myspace, which is kind of annoying but at least it prevents people from making those godawful profiles like Myspace has with transparent tables over bright flashing backgrounds.
The interface beats the hell out of any other "space" set up I've seen though. You can add and remove modules, drag/drop to reorganize them, add RSS feeds, animated photo slideshows, etc.
It's a shame they limit their users so. Embedding non-MSN videos is a real pain, you can only use HTML in a special container that's still in beta testing so you can only add one to your space by appending a string to the customization URL to add it to the modules menu (and even then the HTML is sanitized),... You know what? Never mind. It's irritating but it has a lot of potential. Screw the particulars.
Which is more likely, that an American high school student can write formally and effectively or that he got someone else to write it for him? =)
Then again, you may be right. Consider this line:
1. To expect that any original composition will be considered the authors property and with respect to the guidelines of Fairfax County Public School's Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
The grammar is off ("authors") and the sentence as a whole makes zero sense. Paraphrasing,
"To expect (X) and with respect to (Y)." Pat, I'd like to buy a verb, or maybe drop an "and" or rephrase the entire thing... hrm. Writing is hard, someone do this for me!
Stuff like that aside, it really is pretty well written though. At first I assumed that any errors in it were transcription errors by the poster. It would be pretty funny if someone submitted that petition to turnitin.com to see if it was plagiarized though.
As for politicians who hire speechwriters, well.. yes. The fact that it's common practice doesn't make it any less lame. I know I'd much rather vote for someone who can think for himself than someone who just parrots another's words convincingly.
Has anyone tried using VMWare to install to a real partition and then setting XP's bootloader to boot it as an option? Yeah, I'm an idiot, and I'd most likely have to have the DVD anyway to reinstall system drivers assuming it even boots, but I'm also too cheap to replace my broken DVD burner. Maybe if I can get it on the net it'll hit up Microsoft Update for the missing parts.
At least doing it this way wouldn't kill the MBR if it works. 21 minutes left on the download, I guess I'll find out soon enough.
The Fix is decent but I'd like to see all the new episodes at the end of each week instead of selected epiodes every so often. I'd gladly drop my cable company and pay a small fee to watch the AS block instead.
Sure, you meant it as a joke, but provided hordes of rabid teenage Linux zealots don't follow him to the new project that could actually be a good idea. He seems to want to distance himself from the FSF anyway, I'd imagine he regrets getting involved with those nuts in the first place.
Of course I'd rather see him working on FreeBSD myself. =)
No, it's the current big thing. Like it or not, MS operating systems dominate. I'm too lazy to name names so head over to sf.net and do a search for open source projects for Windows. It's enlightening.
Sure, open source operating system have a disproportionately large percentage of open source projects. That doesn't change the fact that many open source projects are designed for Windows or the fact that the ones for Windows tend to be of higher quality.
The Coke can method Get a Coke can, drink the contents, rinse out the can. Carefully cut the lid section off the can. Superglue a small magnet to the inside of the upper lip of the can so that it's flush with the open top of the can. Place the iPod inside and put the lid on the can. If you've cut the can correctly, the magnet should hold the lid tightly shut. Unless your mugger is exceptionally thirsty, they're unlikely to steal your Coke. Anti-mugger rating: 9/10
I don't know about the UK, but here in the US we haven't developed magnets that'll attract aluminum. Have the CNET guys been watching too much James Bond or do they still make Coke cans out of ferrous metal over there?
I think for this to work, there needs to be some kind of lego-type feature for building new, creative things. You start with a basic, finite set of elements, and allow for their combinations to affect the world in novel ways. Put them in people's hands and you will witness creativity you never thought possible.
Have you tried Second Life? It sounds sort of like what you're talking about here, but instead of doing neat creative things they mostly just try to sell each other porn or put on a female avatar and act as "escorts".
There's potential there to do much more, it's just that most people don't seem interested. Maybe you could show 'em what they should be doing. =)
Just shut up. If/. would remove mod privs for the dumbasses that keep modding shit like this funny the quality of up-modded comments would increase significantly. It's not funny. Neither is, "IN SOVIET RUSSIA, Y verbs X!!!" For that matter, "I, for one, welcome our new X Y Z overlords!" can smoke a flaming turd in hell as well.
It's not just the funny mods that cause problems though. You also have random losers that need to identify with the GPL zealots in order to increase their self-esteem modding down anything that fails to portray Microsoft in a negative light. You have--this isn't even worth the time it takes to type. You stupid bastards know who you are.

The only response this deserves is LOL, UMADBRO?

Hire adults. You're set.
If your people don't understand what socially-acceptable behavior is, they are made of suck and bad.

Erm, yeah, that's kind of silly. I wonder if they've ever played online with a DS.
(goes back to getting his ass kicked at Tetris DS by random Japanese kids for whom he has no friend codes)
Hey, it works in FPSs. =)
Yeah, it says I'm invulnerable too, I'm using Vista RC2. Go figure.
Oh, sorry, this is Slashdot.. ROFFLECOPIER MS IZ TEH SUX LOL !!1
If they don't want you looking at their code you should respect their right to privacy.

You're dead on with the OS integration.

The law example really doesn't fit.

Never mind, I wound up installing to a spare partition from XP by mounting the ISO and running from there. Screw VMWare.
So whose petition did he plagiarize to write this one?
Actually it sounds more like some lawyer's kid got mommy or daddy to write it for him, then he passed the work off as his own. Same deal, right?
Has anyone tried using VMWare to install to a real partition and then setting XP's bootloader to boot it as an option?
