Jailbroken, the iPhone is just yummy. But out of the box, it's pretty worthless. And the App store is just pathetic. Good luck returning an app that doesn't work. Hell, good luck figuring out which apps work without first buying the damn thing. And don't talk to me about reviews - most of them read like they were written by the application software sales staff.

I own an iPhone. I don't think it's very good. At least until it's jailbroken, whereupon it becomes pretty damn cool. Or, at least, useful. Call me when Apple finally realizes that they can't pull a 'razorblade business model' with MobileMe, when the data that is being sync'd is likely proprietary to a business customer or under grant of 'attorney-client privilege.' I'd also like to know when they'll get back to selling utility and functionality instead of flash and show.

    - I still can't sync iPhone's iCal or contacts to my employer's enterprise Oracle Calendaring system, a full year after the iPhone was released.

    - The phone does crash. It has input method problems, particularly when auto-correct does something wrong and there's no means to turn it off.

    - A (somewhat expensive) flashcard app I bought to study Simplified Chinese characters lost all of the cards I input due to the Apple 2.0.1 OS update. There is no mechanism in the app to save cards externally. Furthermore, it is buggy and crashes often. The app store is filled with crap and there's no mechanism for returns. Also, many reviews in the app store are clearly sales propaganda.

But, if jailbroken, the iPhone is the best smartphone on the market for IT folks. You get a shell and ssh with network anywhere in the city. That's very nice for when I have to fix a server nightmare while in the movie theater or out at a party. I sure wish Apple would sell me something like that so I wouldn't have to bother jailbreaking my phone. I'd also like a WIFI VOIP phone for campus wide communications off the cell phone network. A good laptop tethering solution, like most other smartphones offer. And, perhaps, a way to sync my calendar over the air with competing products - like, say, from Oracle.

Look. I didn't hack the phone to run Bittorrent or Skype over AT&T's wireless network. But I bought this phone to service work-flow. It must pay for itself in increased productivity, or I will consider this a wasted investment. Apple: Get your act together. Your App store sucks, with even suckier apps, and this customer is feeling pretty damn used and abused by the process. Furthermore, please pay more attention to your customer needs. I do not need to show off this nifty iPhone to everyone around. I do, however, happen to need a good handheld calendaring solution that is compatible with my employer's system.

Yes. I think this is more a response to Cell than to Intel. You'll note that Cell has a very high bandwidth interconnect between the main CPU and its slave stream processors. And Apple appears to be holding up any OTA sync application that might circumvent syncing through their "MobileMe" so-called service. I also can't sync my contacts to a central server or OTA without MobileMe. Here's my problem:

Apple has no right to view my contacts or schedule. By forcing a sync through their servers, they become a single-point-of-failure for my workflow, and further, they gain potential access to confidential business information. There is no way I'll go for that.

Apple: get a grip. You can have my money, but you cannot have my private and personal information at your whim. Also, I need utility from my phone; I didn't buy the damn thing to show it off.

Finally, I've had to jailbrake the phone for MobileTerminal and ssh, which is also critical to my job.

I'm pretty close to returning the iPhone for a Blackberry. Shame I've been tied to AT&T for the next two years though.
