My bosses boss was the sys admin here. He's moved up over the years. He still keeps his hands in the sys admin stuff on occasion. You know what happens? He fucks things up in the process! Things have changed in the past 5 years that he isn't aware of and so shit breaks when he tries to help.
Do yourself a favor and do one job and do it well. Give up the keys and let someone else sink or swim. If you don't stand aside, you'll be a liability more than an asset.
I wonder how many people were using laptops on their laps with a blanket or pillow or something that helps obstruct the vents on the bottom. It's fun to blame Sony but some times it really does come down to user error. Those vents on the bottom aren't there just for show...
This really depends on your coworkers and what type of work everyone does. If everyone is pretty savvy then you might be OK. No two people use their computer the same way at work though and you'd be surprised how many backwards things people will do as part of their daily work flow.
There aren't many warning pop up boxes to save users from themselves. Are you ready to deal with "I accidentally removed my toolbar" or something equally absurd? Or "Why is it i keep getting a crackling sound when i listen to a youtube video?" Little things that you take for granted that work well on a Windoze box can actually be a pain for average people even in an office environment. Adobe Flash is a pain in the balls randomly on Windoze!
That's all fine and dandy but you're relying on Chrome and FF to keep XP support? FF which has a great track record for stability and consistency while never changing things for the sake of changing things *cough* PDF viewer *cough*? Chrome which is from Google who has a great track record of keeping products around?
Better yet, how about letting us opt in to the audio crap? Because oh man most of us LOVE listening to music while working and then having a browser tab start talking!
BTW... Buck Feta!
It's also hella expensive to stream shows for the rug rat in the back seat when we're on a road trip. Cheaper to give my money to Netflix than to ATT/VZW for the trips that i need to keep the little snot gobbler sedated so i don't go postal.
Our accounting people have to have 7.17 installed so that JPMorgan/Chase will work for them. Another dept uses a site for a supplier of parts that only runs on Java 7.45 with the security slide bar thingy set to "Medium" (which is as low as you can go for some reason). Our Mac's (designer people) can't use a Kodak site because Apple forced out the latest version which is incompatible. Our SAN requires 7.17.
There's a special place in hell for Java and i can't wait to dance on it's charred corpse when it finally dies.
I'd gladly embrace/. Beta if it would somehow rid the world of Java.
In the process of doing volunteer work, I regularly run across Cisco interns all the time. They are almost all young, unlikely to be well trained in resume writing, and have relatively little experience
This is different from Cisco guru's who also are young, unlikely to be well trained in resume writing, and have relatively little experience?
No mention of how long this "experiment" ran. How long was it that these sites were inaccessible from Comcast? What types of sites are they? Who is their DNS through?
This could easily have been a problem with a hosting service.
As much as we all love hating on Comcast, a few more details would be helpful.
It's not just government officials. This is rampant in the work world. The higher up the food chain you look, the more you have "leaders" who openly reject technology and cloak themselves in their ignorance. They literally joke about how little they know in regards to their basic tools. I'm confident most of us can name at least one "superior" who held critical decision making powers in an organization who would print off their emails to read them rather than reading them on the monitor.
Why are these people not being publicly shamed? Why are they not being openly mocked and degraded because they "haven't gotten around to email"? Yes there's more to life than eating, breathing, and living tech. That being said, they should feel fucking ashamed that they refuse to learn the basic tools needed to function in the modern world.
This doesn't just apply to computer technology. Ignorance of everyday tools is rampant in our society. People can't figure out to pull their car over on the highway because they have a flat tire. They can't be bothered to check the oil in their engine. Replacing a light bulb is a monumental task. Hell, people can't even boil water for noodles without screwing that up!
Shame them.
Agreed. Slickdeals can be a very useful website but the stuff that some of the people openly brag about in the forums makes me ill.
Fraud is fraud. If you're using one of those codes, it's fraud. Yeah you can blame it on bad security and whatever else makes you feel better but it's still fraud. You're getting something for nothing.
It's not Porsche's fault that my car got stolen when i left the keys on the seat, the top down, windows open, but the doors locked. It's my own damn fault!
(Note: I do not, nor have I ever owned a Porsche!)
What are you going to do? Switch over to one of their competitors? Use your mobile provider for your internet access? I'm fucked. You're fucked. We're all collectively fucked. Most importantly, THEY (the ISP's) know it. Go ahead. Drop your internet provider. Have fun getting your news because printed news is dieing.
Agreed about the 7 miles. I worked for an e-commerce company that had lost everything during hurricane Katrina. The data center got flooded. The backup server was dumped to tape and the ex-admin would pick those up weekly. His house went under water.

No good deed goes unpunished.
Because XP 64bit was a steaming turd! Buggy as hell. Driver support was a nightmare. Better than WinME but that's not saying much.

In the name of all that is holy STOP the auto playing audio! Who are you trying to impress?

Apple will do what they want and get away with it like usual.

Better yet, make it illegal for planes to crash. That'll solve everything!

According to my coworkers, the monitor is the CPU.
Those who have no point, use Power Point!
A surge protector doesn't protect you nearly as well as people are lead to believe.
Yet they're in Anaheim! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L...
I read the summary. The summary sounds like some cheap ass lifehacker story. In true /. tradition, i'm posting after reading the summary without RTFA.
If we had a Union, we'd have to learn a thing or two about being fat and sitting around during down time! (sarcasm)

Don't a lot most of what's said which is why i'm interested in this!
