Don't worry. Microsoft will roll out a handheld later this year that has a 600 MHz processor, 128 MB RAM, and all sorts of other shit that they claim will make it excellent for gaming and business.

Then they will go the way of Tapwave, which did the exact same thing a couple of years ago with Palm OS and attracted no interest.

I have AppleCare, but Apple still wants $700 for the logic board anyway. They claim that because their ethernet port chipped away months ago, that counts as "physical damage" and is not subject to the terms of Apple's warranty.

Now I've saved a lot by buying warranties for laptops in the past. If your LCD screen dies, that alone covers the price of any extended warranty plan. That happened to me with my old Compaq laptop ($100 for a two-year replacement plan; a week after the extended period started, the screen died).

I bought a 12 inch Powerbook last May. I wouldn't recommend one to my worst enemy.

The G4 Powerbooks are extremely malleable since they're made out of aluminum. You can run your finger down the edge and feel where the metal flexes due to the presence of a tiny screw. I've been able to bend the metal around the power connector just by carrying the laptop around in a padded case.

The plastic parts, such as the ethernet port, are also prone to breaking. Apple wanted $700 this morning for a new logic board because their piece-of-shit ethernet connector was missing a clip that fell out during normal use. The port still works, by the way.

There is no legal significance of "beta." The reason why Google News hasn't been modified is because of concerns over advertising. If Google News adds those omnipresent Google Adsense ads like Google Groups did, then Google's "fair use" claim is null and void as far as US law goes. Google would be making money off of other people's content without providing any other content (editorial review, etc.). This is the reason why Google News has been sued in a few other countries.

Google leaves everything as "beta" because Google doesn't like receiving criticism. If ever a bad word is said about a Google product/service on Slashdot, the cries of "it's only BETA!" immediately follow.

You remind me of the ads for computers ten years ago that came bundled with $1200 of software, yours FREE with purchase!

Now start subtracting out the costs:
    • iLife has a movie editor, a DVD authoring program and a music composition program that I'll never use. I can't buy those separately, so now I'm "paying" $79 for iPhoto.
    • AppleWorks was so bad, Apple replaced it with iWork -- a "suite" that consists of a whopping two programs. OpenOffice is free, though the Mac version is VERY slow.
    • Quicken 2005 for Mac, at $70, has about the same feature set as Quicken 2005 Basic for Windows which costs $30.
    • Nanosaur and Marble Blast Gold are not games I would ever really care to buy anyway, so that's another $45 off the price.

Now if you really want to play the numbers game, go through all the software that comes with Windows. The Mac doesn't even have a bundled solitaire game -- you have to buy one at the Apple Store for $20 or try VersionTracker for a free version. (I've tried all of them, and they're all terrible.) I could go on, but my POS PowerBook is in for repair and my Windows machine is long gone.

Firewall programs are free (Windows and Mac both include one), and so are anti-virus programs (AVG for Windows).

I've met several Mac users who pirate all their software including the OS. I also see a lot of Slashdot comments that advise buying everything with the educational discount ($70 for OSX versus $130 without the discount) regardless of whether or not you meet the requirements. Apple doesn't check in any significant way.

Apple tends not to pursue pirates. The margins on their hardware are that good, and enough people buy the software legit, that it doesn't hurt Apple's bottom line enough for them to care.

For $100 plus installation (or not) the Alpine adapter is very limited. From reviews I've read, the head unit can scroll through titles VERY slowly (one every ~1 second) and it can't view more than a certain number of items (songs, artists, etc.).

I commend Alpine for building the AI-NET interface into their head units to allow for such an adapter to exist. I just hope Alpine makes a more iPod-friendly head unit in the future.
