the panel is more configurable. the control center has been greatly improved (less buggy, more stable), the applets are better, etc., etc.

in short, this is what GNOME developers have been working on for the past year. October GNOME was just a sideshow, for the most part.

  6. provide print materials by request only on Are Printed Manuals Dead? · · Score: 1

i think it depends to some extent on the type of software involved (e.g. a boxed operating system should provide at least a simple reference manual in case the user can't get the system to install or boot), but for most applications, the advantages of electronic documentation make it the best way to go.

however, to accomodate those customers who do want printed media, a company should either provide printed (preferrably bound) versions of any manual on request, or distribute their documentation in such a way that another business or individual can legally create and distribute printed copies of the electronic manuals (read: GNU Free Documentation License).

  7. "Take me off your list" isn't good enough on On DDoS, SPAM, Telemarketing And Harrasment? · · Score: 1
some people seem to think that asking telemarketers to take you off "their list" is the appropriate thing to do in response to an unsolicited call.

while this may help (but probably won't), a more helpful and effective tactic (as many people have already mentioned) is to have them put you on their "DO NOT CALL" or "DO NOT SOLICIT" list.

the reason is that direct marketers are required by law to keep a list of people they cannot call for at least ten years, but there are no laws respecting their management of lists of people they can call. so if they take you off "their list", there's nothing to stop them from using another list with your number later, or from putting your number back on their list.

  8. Why "the phrase" is in the DLL on Microsoft IIS4 Backdoor Claim Retracted · · Score: 1
people keep asking why the phrase "Netscape engineers are weenies!" was in the affected DLL if it wasn't the pass phrase for a back door of some kind.

from this note on Microsoft's site, it seems that the phrase was being used as an "obfuscation key" for filenames in HTTP requests involving this component (probably using an XOR scheme, or else they would have called it encryption).

But wasn't a password of some kind needed to exploit the original vulnerability?

Press reports originally claimed that Dvwssr.dll used a password to bypass access controls, but this was not correct. The component uses an obfuscation key to obscure the names of files being requested by the client from the server. The obfuscation key and its use did not influence the operation of the access controls on the server in any way.

by mailer, he means an MTA, not an MUA.

AOL is having ORBS block outbound SMTP traffic from its external IP gateways in an effort to stop AOL users from running their own MTA through AOL's network. AOL's own SMTP servers do not send mail through those gateways, so they will not be blocked. these machines are presumably spam-proofed in some way, hence they are not listed as open relays.

AOL users can use any user agent they want, as long as the mail only gets sent out through AOL's SMTP. (actually, spammers can still run their own outbound SMTP on AOL's network, but ORBS subcribers won't receive it)
