Perhaps these articles should specify that only Linux/i386 binaries have been released. Remember, when you just say "Linux" you are implying more than just Intel.
An interesting point, but sadly probably moot. In Australia, non-Intel hardware is both horribly rare and horrificly overpriced (compared to Intel stuff) due to simple economies of scale. Hell, second hand Sparc machines are beyond the pale in terms of pricing. Curse you, Craig Derwick!
Show me a dual G4 ATX MB for less that AUS$800 and I'll be in like Flynn!
The problem, AC, is that BeOS currently has no hardware accelerated 3D support. If you had stopped manically advocating for five seconds and actually thought about the issues for a minue, this would have occured to you.
I'd suspect that the Big Game Companies (tm) are waiting for BeOS 5, so they'll get the groovy accelerated OpenGL.
Linux is no less a "real" un*x than anything else, unless you want to get narky about who owns the Unix(tm)(r)(c) trademark and source licenses these days.
"Real Unix" is a misnomer. Linux/*BSD may not be as mature, but they're no less a "real" un*x.
Mozilla is certainly look good - however, it still doesn't want to use our http proxy server like wot I am compelled to use. The autoproxy option doesn't work (I dunno if we even have javascript yet), but worse, the manual proxy configuration simply isn't hooked up.
Which means I can see my own web page (gee!), but I can't give it a workout with real surfing.
Apparently the necessary callback in netlib (NET_PrefChangedFunc) is not called when the network preference change while loading the prefs50.js file. You can force mozilla to use the proxy info by changing the proxy type in the preference dialog, OKing, then changing it back to the right type (after which NET_PrefChangedFunc is called). The next time you load mozilla, it will fail again, though.
Still doesn't work for me though. I'm not sure what sort of a bug I can report this as, apart from "Duh. Doesn't work".
Do we know this beasty will do SMP? That's something of a priority for my purchasing requirements these days. I hate having to cheat with Celerons - I'd rather the manufacturers did it right first time.
Is this thing still going to be swapable with the late model Alphas?
Hmm, "alphanumeric person" seems like somewhat of an ad hominem attack...or was that intended irony?
The latter.
Then each of those people represent themselves. If they happen to all be Open Source advocates, then it shows that a significant percentage of Open Source advocates really are somewhat on the insane side. You can't tell these people "no I don't want you on my side anymore," because I doubt they will go away. You just have to realize that a significant portion of you cause is made up of insane lunatics.
Regretfully, I often find my misanthropy fully justified. That doesn't mean we shouldn't kick against the pricks.
And who defines "muddy thinking"? I personally consider a lot of what Linus says to be "muddy thinking," so should it be rejected? Hmm...
Please, think it through. You could engage in a rational discourse with Linux, and through a process of trying to verify statements, come to some sort of understanding.
That's why slashdot can be helpful - it's one of the few places where those without clue are often called upon to justify themselves.
I don't understand why every time it is suggested that perhaps the cause of Linux is better served by a bit of restraint and maturity someone feels the need to haul out "freedom of speech" as a defense for acting like an eight-year old.
Quite so.
Freedom Of Speech != Freedom Is Speech
Words have power. With power comes responsibilty.
And no, this isn't the "yelling 'fire' in a crowded room" argument.
I mean, it's a pretty good argument against the Linux community, isn't it... so how do we know he's not just smearing the OSS community?
Without some kind of formal investigation? You don't. However, as the saying goes: Do not multiply entities needlessly. In an industry fizzing with conflict and discontent, he (the columnist) doesn't stand to gain much by fermenting dissent. I just can't see any Machievellian intent here - if you have information to the contrary, print and be damned.
We live in a big bad society. If you can't deal with flamers, lamers, assholes, and mouthpieces, you better start sucking on a revolver. It only gets tougher from her on in.
A meaningless argument.
The whole point of the society we like to think we live in is mutal respect and obligation, ie:
I have the right not to be murdered in my bed.
In return, I am expected not to murder anybody else in there bed.
As above, so below. Nobody deserves to be mailbombed or harrased - you need to learn to handle the responsiblity of co-existing with people you disagree with. This is the price you pay for not being harassed yourself.
Easy, non?
And please, people - lose the numeric characters in your handle. Do you really think that's going to protect you from the all-grepping Hand of The Man?
Flaming, email-bombing, and other tactics may not be civilized, but they are the actions of people who care about GNU/Linux and its future. It may not be "mature" to attack a *nix detractor. It was also not "mature" to dump tea into the Boston harbor. nothing has ever been accomplished by pseduo-civilized discussion over crumpets.
Congratulations on a succinct summary of the Fascist Discourse.
A question: Did you actually think this through before you posted? Do you really think the means justifies the end in terms of OS advocacy?
If he can't manage to separate out a few nuts from the reasonable people.. that's his problem.
Did you actually ready the column?
It hardly sounds like the work of a "rotten few". This sort of thing seems to go on far to often. It seems that a significant number of Linux advocates lose sight of the fact that with freedom comes responsibility. Be responsible for your actions, kids. He (the columnist) 'fessed up when he did a Bad Thing. So should the slashdot "community".
And anyone who uses numerals in their "nick", or ever writes software with the word "Greetz to:" in the docs should be thourougly minced. High school is over, people.

Your own statement answers your question. They
...
chose not port to BeOS because they didn't get
"enough BeOS user feedback".
Uh-huh. The fact there is currently no
3D acceleration for BeOS is irrelevant?
BeOS 5 looks like a fine gaming enviroment, but It's Not Ready Yet. When will it be released? When it's ready.
I think I've heard that before somewhere

What about in Australia? Any hints on where to get good Alpha hardware?
And which country would you choose to guide us? The Poms, who put us up as cannon fodder in WW1?
And in WW2 - look up the Brisbane Line. We had to beg Churchill to bring Australian troops back from Europe to defend out northern coast.
The Yanks, who show their political panache by electing Reagan and Clinton?
"Now to New Guinea, and a crack at those Japs!" - John Wayne.
And his name is Tony Blair.
I think you may mean Jack Straw.
However, STOP BLOODY SAYING ENGLAND WHEN YOU MEAN THE UNITED KINGDOM.
No - we mean England. Scotland, for example, has a much more sane grasp of privacy issues.
>HAHAHAHA, you need to move to american you bush
>whacking loser
How on earth was this moderated up to 1?
Looks like a FAQ, so had I bothered to read
s e-notes/m9.html#KNOWN_ISSUES

I would have found out for myself. Ah well, roll on M11.
Hooray! It actually runs!
Mozilla is certainly look good - however, it still doesn't want to use our http proxy server like wot I am compelled to use. The autoproxy option doesn't work (I dunno if we even have javascript yet), but worse, the manual proxy configuration simply isn't hooked up.

Is this on the cards for m10?

what what what? at least unix doesn't let you change into directories that dont exist!
Oh dear. I'd quite forgotten about that. Ah, Nurse! The screens!
I'm still gonna install OpenVMS on an old 3400 one day, for kicks.
What are they so concerned about? Are they afraid that someone might actually improve their driver?
/really/ want to learn how to program and optimise a propietry ASIC? How would this benefit Linux/*BSD development?
/no/ different to the microcode blocks included for some Adaptec drivers, which nobody complaions about.
Criminy, people - do you
The WARP spec issue is
Oh, for Glub's sake!
... not ... type ... X!
I meant LINUS, not LINUX.
Must

Arrgh, I meant Linux - not Linux. Eeek.
Yes, freedom of speech means a few rotten apples.
Ah. That makes amilbombs, ad hominem attacks and puerile behaviour perfectly OK then. I'm glad you're here to remind us, alphanumeric person.
I prefer that to having some "community" tell me what I can or cannot write or say.
It's a free internet. However, what goes around comes around - virtual karma, in this case.
When you write a stupid flame mail, you represent yourself. No one else. No "community".
When it's just you? Sure. Whem it's LOTS of people, each claiming to represent the whole - absolutely not.
The moral majortiy isn't, you recall.
Maybe Slashdot should form a soviet, er, committee for approved opinions regarding linux.
A valid point, in as much nobody wants a Stalinist Slashdot. Equal important is the rejection of muddy thinking.
I don't understand why every time it is suggested that perhaps the cause of Linux is better served by a bit of restraint and maturity someone feels the need to haul out "freedom of speech" as a defense for acting like an eight-year old.

AFAIK- the only 3D support in 4.5 will be 3dfx..
Definitely Banshee and V3, and maybe older Voodoo based boards as well...
Well, the Matrox G200 3D specs have been out for a while, so I wouldn't be too surprised to see a 3D accelerated OpenGL for the G200.
The WARP ASIC microcode? I dunno.
Hmm. http://www.linuxhq.com/online.html 404's for me.
