Since I actually live here, I guess I know a little more about our native fauna than you probably do (which appears to be solely based on 'Survivor 2'). They are called 'koalas', in the same way lions are not called 'lion cats' - or do you call them 'lion dogs'? Frankly, I would probably shit on you too, if you picked me up.

  8. Re:More SLOT MACHINES running linux too! on Korean Air Mission Critical Systems Moved to Linux · · Score: 1

Saw an article not too long ago about the increase in gang violence in France related to 'stacked' gaming machines. In France, like probably everywhere else, legal gaming machines must pay out at least 85% in winnings. Organised crime have machines which payout around 50%, which they supply to hotels and clubs to keep in the back room, and everyone takes their cut. This is now so lucrative that quite a few gang bosses have been murdered in turf wars over these machines. The police investigating the murder of one high level gang boss have not solved it in over a year, because all their main supects keep getting bumped off by rival gangs.

Developing countries have a very high take up of mobile communications tech, since they bypass the need to have (expensive) landlines laid to every place you want to have a phone. Landlines also have a nasty habit of being pulled down every time a decent storm passes through, or being dug up by a local farmer, requiring more maintenance in often remote areas. For mobile phones, you just need to put up a cell tower every so often, which aren't as susceptable to falling trees and the like.

  25. tying remedy on Microsoft Verdict Vacated · · Score: 1

Given that Microsoft has been affirmed to hold a monopoly for O/S on x86, a possible remedy to the 'tying problem' would be to prevent them integrating into the O/S any functionality for which there exists similar products from other parties. They can still develop, market and even supply the software with the OS, but it must be possible to completely remove or replace the software without affecting the operation of the rest of the system. For example, they would not be able to 'integrate' WMP into the OS, given the existance of Realplayer et al. Any truly innovative product they develop they can do what they like with, but if there is already a standalone product out there, it must remain a separate application.
