Actually you do have that choice - it is called 'voting informally'. You are only required by law to have your name crossed of the electoral roll as having attended a voting booth. What you do with your ballot papers after that is entirely up to you.

This extract from the Bob Frankenberg interview on /. yesterday.

"CBSMW: What's an example of how Microsoft wields monopoly power?

Frankenberg: When I was responsible for Hewlett-Packard's PC business, I remember a year in which the price of MS-DOS and Windows moved up by 60 percent in one year with almost no change in (the product). Those prices aren't seen directly by the consumer; they're built into the prices of PCs as they're sold. But of course, that meant all manufacturers had to increase their prices."

If Microsoft were not a monopoly, and truly had competition in the OS arena, how did they get away with this? Why didnt HP just piss them off? Because there was (and is) no viable alternative for mainstream PC manufacturers.

Remember, it is not illegal to become a monopoly, its just that once you are a monopoly, different rules apply. Just like you have to have a special license to drive a semi-trailer, and special road rules apply.

I was able to bring down part of my company's email system, while I was on holiday.

Before taking vacation, I set my email to autoreply the fact that I was on vacation and would not be able to respond to any emails.

While I was away, and automatic system sent me an email saying that there was something that required my attention. This system was also able to retrieve information requested via email, so it was set up to receive emails as well.

My mail system duly sent my 3 line autoreply back to the automatic system. The automatic system tried to parse the email for what it was supposed to do, but since it wasn't in the format it expected, for each line it sent an email saying it didn't understand what it was supposed to do. To each of these emails, my mail duly sent the 3 line autoreply, and so on.

Within a couple of days, the tens of thousands of email messages generated brought our email server to its knees.
