  1. Getting Crazy on Is Physical Law an Alien Intelligence? (nautil.us) · · Score: 1

We already have some people who believe that our universe is simply an illusion created by some sort of computer program. It could be that our notion that physical laws exist at all is simply part of the illusion. It goes without saying that if all we see is simply an illusion we have little reason to be motivated to do anything at all. There is no gain no matter what we do or believe.

  2. Really, I know people need work but isn't it enough to simply say that a person with a severe emotional problem murdered a bunch of people. One can investigate the purple, flying Jesus out of it all and in the end it will come down to a mentally ill man acting out with great rage and hatred. Do we really need to spend millions to come to that conclusion?

One day some investors may pipe that water to ares that need it. My local spillway often has to dump 1.5 billion gallons a day and there are many spillways and canals tasked with removal of excess water.

There are also some really challenging tests with the colored blocks that psychologists have used for decades. Being able to remember the colors and geometries of all six sides of a cubs and solve a complex puzzle quickly can be more strenuous than many test subjects can tolerate.

  5. In 1960 I had a 125 cc Vespa two stroke. It gave me about 110 mpg. Many cars at that time only got six miles per gallon. So the cars might be burning 17 times as much fuel. If one compared the total pollution per mile driven the car might have looked pretty awful. There is a political reality that was never fairly addressed. Huge cars burn a lot more gas than tiny cars. If both use up to date pollution controls the smaller cars will win every time. But politics being what they are the US wanted the big car manufacturers to prosper. The reality is that restricting vehicle weight and size and engine power and size would have saved us from a tremendous amount of pollution. The same thinking prevails. The coal industry wants to burn coal. The excuse is investments and jobs. but what needs to be the only consideration is the effect the product has on the earth.

  6. Please - NO ! on New Technology Should Be Neither Feared Nor Trusted (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

The notion that governments and committees can somehow act to make things better in reference to technology is over the top dangerous. Obviously even the US can not keep corruption from being the driving force in government. the notion that such groups could make things better with laws and regulations is sick. To start with a technology that is disturbing and disruptive can turn around and be a wonderful technology. Uber is an example. Numerous groups described Uber as a beast from hell. Now we find that it works far better than taxis at less than half the price to the user. We can all imagine the fights that will break out when over the road transport goes robotic. Fortunes will be made and lost as well. Instead of trying to regulate technology what the government can do is make certain that every single person in the nation has a decent income whether they work or not. As long as buyers have money to spend businesses can make sales. If a large number of people have no disposable income then businesses will collapse. Other areas can be controlled as well. Quality fish products are vanishing from our store shelves. The export of every bit of fish and shell fish is now standard policy as many areas of the world can pay more for seafood than Americans can. The simple answer is to disallow the sale of any seafood products to foreign nations or companies. This will increase the health of US fishing grounds and the abundance of fish and allow the fishing industry to make a living selling their product at much lower prices. This type of social planing is something that government is equipped to deal with. Items that involve technology or science are not well dealt with in a voting booth.

I am also rather shocked that the US does not understand just how excellent foreign universities may be. Even in the US schools shine in places we would not expect to produce good schools. The U. of Texas has been active in bleeding edge technology lately. I find that astounding in a state with such rancid political beliefs and actions.

On top of that you attack the cherished fantasy that if Trump says something it must be true. It is as if you are trying to kill these mental midgets. But then you fail to really grind into the meat and raw nerves of the right wing. After all, pollution is a consequence of human activity. Humans can only change their activities so much without the world crumbling in their imaginations so it is obvious that what is really called for is the shrinking of the size of the human population. That might involve all the Satanic stuff like birth control, use of condoms or even abortions or that sinful morning after pill. So what is really being pointed out is that all the topics that liberals want to have as standards in the community seem to be correct and all the really repressive nonsense sought by the right wing is exactly what is causing the horrors around us. Now run to your meaningless voting booths and place that limp vote for the freak of your choice. You'll really have to go some to get a leader worse than Trump in power.

  9. Very Hard to Judge on Uber Faces Engineers' Lawsuit Alleging Gender, Race Bias (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

There are situations where discrimination is blatant and severe remedies are called for. However there are situations that are really hard to get right. For example if you have a hard and fast rule that anyone who misses work or is late five times in one year is fired and you stick to that rule you might find that people with young children are adversely effected. But that same rule would also get rid of people who drink too much. The employer need not look at the sex or marital status or age of the employee in question. So just how would the employer know that a certain group was adversely effected by the rule? Then we come to another hurdle. There are plenty of Americans who weigh 300 lbs. or more. Can a 95 lb. female flip a 3oo lb. person over her shoulder and carry him 80 feet down a ladder? For that matter can a 120 lb. man do the same thing? So would allowing the smaller folks to fill fireman's positions you would be either requiring far more employees to respond to a fire or sentencing larger people to burning to death. And those fat folks are tax payers as well. Another place where we see the problem is when a cop confronts an individual of certain ethnic backgrounds. A white suburbanite will tend to comply with a cop's orders. But a young black male will tend to move a lot, walk about, make all kinds of rants and gestures. He will not want to be told anything by a white officer and very little from a black officer as well. That walking about and ranting is excessively dangerous to cops. Suspects are known to spin about and shoot cops. The same is true of a foot chase. If the suspect has a gun in the front of his shirt he can spin and fire before a cop can react. Yet fairness also requires that all people are treated the same. In my state not so long ago anyone who ran from a cop could be gunned down with no questions asked. Very, very few people would try to run from a cop. Now the cops are not allowed to shoot simply because a person is running and now most younger suspects run creating a life and death hazard every time they run.

The mixing and conglomeration of various peoples allowed us to have strength and knowledge beyond our nations enemies. It enabled our survival as well as our progress. Today the wrapping on the packages is looking different but inside the same wonders still reside. For example the sciences and engineering positions in our universities have serious numbers of people from Pakistan, India, and the Pacific rim nations making breakthroughs daily. We are being enriched tremendously by foreign scholars. In the mechanical sciences and arts we seem to love French, Italian and German designers for mechanical as well as styling considerations. We also are getting schooled on how to build cars by Japanese and S.Korean car industries. If you don't believe the government would do that look at Puerto Rico and the US virgin Islands today. These people are being murdered by an absurd type of relief effort. Puerto Rico already had a huge problem. The nation is bankrupt and has been disallowed declaration of bankruptcy by the US courts. In order to pay their huge debt these people would be severely taxed and they are poor to begin with. As they are US citizens and fully able to migrate into the US proper any sane Puerto Rican would come to the mainland leaving less and less Puerto Ricans to pay the billions in debt. Now on top of that we have a hurricane that destroyed the nation. So they need many more billions to get up and running. That means huge taxes so why the heck would anyone stay in Puerto Rico? Obviously bankruptcy is one very good answer. Or simply abandon the island and have everyone come to the US. Meanwhile the US almost seems to be setting them up for mass executions by a very slow and foolish relief effort. Frankly I like Puerto Rican people. My observation is that some personalities simply can not obey rules. for quite a few inmates they need to be isolated permanently in a prison for people who will never be released. For example stealing a car should always result in a stiff sentence. Some people actually need to know that their life will be ended for committing certain crimes. I do not mean use a death penalty.
