This too.
It's ok for Google to require an account on Android, since Android is a free OS, that is one of the ways they make their money back. But we are PAYING for Windows. I don't want any tied in accounts, "App" stores, and cloud storage. Vanilla OS, please.
You can try 10 Technical Preview. It is Windows 8.1 with Metro condensed to a start menu. It still has some full-screen hijacking apps and tons of bloat from Bing and the "App" Store. This might be ok for some people but it sounds like Microsoft is going down the wrong road for those of us that like a clean, controlled, and predictable system. Linux may be the answer for many if it has the right program support, but it's possible that 7 is the last sane OS from Microsoft.
Mainstream support ended a while ago, when they refused to update DirectX for it. Microsoft stops supporting their old OS as soon as the new is out, regardless of adoption rate.
4k is just a buzzword. They'd be better off having higher quality 1080 streams, right now they're highly compressed. Higher quality 1080 would appeal to MANY more people given the adoption rate of 1080 over 4k.
I think you misunderstood Ron024's comment, or maybe I did.
He is saying newer versions of OSX are NOT compatible with older machines. You can get mostly any linux distro to run on any computer since like a Pentium 2 (dependent on DE/WM).
Comparing apples to oranges when it comes to linux distros. RHEL is for mission critical stability and especially servers where you don't want stuff changing all the time.
Rolling release distros are dangerous in production environments. Especially a distro like Arch takes way too much effort to setup and maintain. Not every computer is a hobby.
Not true. It was also criticized for not having the same way to get into safe mode as previous versions and for having watered down BSODs.
Regardless, "only interface criticism" is a pretty big one considering you can't use win8 without some apps hijacking the fullscreen or the stupid start screen hiding your desktop. For me it was easy to close stuff and shutdown with ALT+F4, but for those not as familiar with shortcuts it is pretty annoying to even shut windows 8 down. I never did find the power/restart button, I don't remember having this problem since even before windows 3.1.
I can just stream a game to a small HTPC in my living room, or onto my tablet and have it powered by my main rig.
I think that is one of the main points of the steambox. The way I see it is that valve is expecting most gamers to have a high power windows gaming rig separate from their home theater system. The steambox will serve as an entry to the console market, and allow you to stream your entire library onto the linux steambox.
Sure you could have windows on your HTPC too, it doesn't really make a difference. But windows is not exactly the best HTPC OS, it's designed for keyboard/mouse (and more recently, touchscreens) so steam wants more control over designing a better suited HTPC specific OS that can be controlled by controller or remote. Think about how XBMC looks. Do you hate that too?
You can have a Google-free experience with Android. Android is developed by AOSP, not Google.
If you flash an AOSP ROM, it will be almost completely FOSS as long as you don't flash the Google applications on top. You can use F-droid for the majority of your FOSS application needs, and/or side-load.apks.
Further, if you are against blobs, Replicant is an AOSP based alternative but with firmware blobs removed (thought the supported hardware is extremely limited).
What is an "Android system"? Ubuntu for phones does not run on "Android systems", that is incorrect.
Ubuntu for Android was not an OS, it was a layer on top of the Android OS.
Ubuntu for Phones (Ubuntu Touch) is a linux based OS that happens to run on most of the same hardware as phones that run Android.
The decision makes perfect sense, in my opinion.
I find it hilarious that every update to 8.0 is just reversing the big mistake of 8/metro more and more. After a couple of updates we'll probably have windows 7 again with 8 boot and explorer/shell enhancements, what it should have been in the first place.
The latest generation of Microsoft products goes against all reasoning with naming convention.
I agree, why isn't this called Windows 8.1 SP1? Or probably should have been 8.0 SP2 (8.1 should have probably been 8.0 SP1)
Why is it called Xbox One? Why not Xbox 3? I know it's a different department but they need to stop trying to be different and creative with their naming scheme and just make god damn sense.
Interoperability between LibreOffice and Microsoft Office is less than ideal in my opinion. You will always run into some issues, with references, equations, fonts, something.
If Linux has all of the software you need to get the job done, then go for it. If you still use programs for Windows, using a VM or dual booting is not worth it in my opinion, better off staying with Windows.
If you do go Linux it is better to go full force: change over everyone. Have everyone use LibreOffice and make.odt,.ods, etc standard for your workplace. You should have minimal problems.
Do not recommend Linux to someone if you're not the IT guy and it is not your job. You will be blamed for everything that goes wrong and will waste time fixing or explaining differences. Do use a spin creation system for your distro of choice and have all of your software pre-installed for your tasks to minimize customization and difference between workstations.
Have you even looked at the budget breakdown?
Pensions are the #1 expense. Instead of 40 years in the military we're probably closer to the point where people's retirements are longer than their actual years of service. You only need 20 years of service in order to retire younger than 62. The average retirement age of a federal employee is 60 but what if someone retires in their 50's or even 40's and then ends up living into their 90s? The results can be fairly extreme.

Win7 still has extended support until 2020. Mainstream support ended a while ago anyways, if you ask me (DirectX).

It was an Android advantage maybe 3+ years ago. However for at least the past couple years Flash has not been supported on Android.

Ubuntu GNOME running in Classic is not terrible.
when will we finally get hihger than 1920*1080 resolution monitors at a decent price ????
Or when will 1920x1080 be the standard for small laptops instead of 1366x768?
I didn't realize Donkey Kong 2 was making such a comeback.

Steambox will never have an exclusive. Gaben has repeated this several times.

I thought LibreOffice was the true descendant of OpenOffice.org?

Don't both suse and red hat enterprise variants use Gnome as their default desktop? Don't they contribute to the project?

Wow who submitted this? This is over a month old and was already on slashdot when it was breaking. Everyone should be patched by now.
Qt is a widget toolbox used for designing UIs. What does this have to do with a display server? As far as I know, display servers are X and Wayland.
But you do know openSUSE 13.2 is "pretty far away"? It won't be released until November 2014.
