It was possible before DeCSS to decode DVDs, and encode VCDs with them. There are plenty of DVDRips floating around, but DeCSS has nothing to do with them.

So, DeCSS is irrelevant as far as piracy. Get it now?

The insightful posts are those that fly in the face of popular opinion, and make Slashdot worth reading. It's just a shame that the moderation system delegates those posts to the same level as the "Taco's mom" posts.

If we allow that mp3.com is legally a "person" then it follows that mp3.com could, under fair use, rip any CDs it owns into mp3, for its own listening. To say that they also have the right under fair use to provide any sort of mp3 service to other owners of the CD is stretching it.

It amuses me that people bash software companies for their licensing schemes, and bore us with nostalgia for Borland's "like a book" agreement, and then turn around and claim that they have a "license" to a song. You bought a CD. If you want to listen to it elsewhere, you carry it with you. If you want to sell it, you go right ahead. If you step on it, you are not entitled to a free replacement copy, anymore than you'd get a book replaced if you dropped it in the bathtub.

If some states choose to be reasonable, and work against UCITA, then Johnny Slashdot can't scream about switching to Open Source software to fight the evil software companies, and will have to revert to pouring hot grits down his pants and stalking Natalie Portman. I'm afraid Iowa is just getting in the way of progress.

change from something people did furtively on IRC, to an absolute right of the people to have whatever they want, whenever they want? I guess when programs like Napster make it possible for any clueless newbie on cable or University ethernet to serve up mp3s to the masses, it becomes acceptable?

Seriously, just because it's easy to steal, doesn't make it right--at least have the decency to hide what you're doing, people. The quote from Lars comparing these people to looters was quite appropriate.

  11. Blatant Piracy Category on The Napster DMCA Defense · · Score: 1

Napster was conceived with the simple goal of facilitating the exchange of pirated music, and they spammed Efnet mp3 channels to build their user base of Rickey Martin and Britney Spears mp3 leeches. Nothing about this company helps the cause of free speech, or a better distribution model for the music industry.

Could you please create a Pirated Music category, for news about Napster and its clones, so that those of us who don't care about this company or its users can filter it from the main page, and pay it the attention it deserves?

K-lining a script kiddie is guaranteed to bring a DoS attack, that's why. Get the point? If these admins are going to be attacked for administering their own networks, then it's really not worth their while to provide this free service to people. If everyone would stop whining about their IRC being taking away, and comparing this to grade school punishment, they may actually realize that people are getting tired of running IRC servers, which is painfully evident on rapidly-shrinking Efnet.

So you can't connect to IRC for a day...if things don't change, the large IRC networks will gradually disappear. Not that this would necessarily be a bad thing, but it's pretty silly to whine about being denied a free service, for which the admins receive no compensation or reward, just a lot of juvenile whining.

We just like the buyers...

That's called demographics. Do you suppose Microsoft is beating down Rob's door to advertise on this site? Companies spend their advertising money in ways that are designed to reach as much of their targeted audience as possible. I suppose that once all the Linux-related companies realized that /. would be an ideal location, you would have suggested to Rob that he turn down that revenue and wait for those Norton Anti-Virus for NT ads to come rolling in.

Like it or not, websites need to be paid for in some way, and advertising is the dominant model. If you can point me to any evidence that the content of /. changed after these ads started, please do. If the content hasn't changed, and has merely drawn companies that fit the prevailing attitude, that's not selling out...it's intelligent marketing, and it beats the hell out of CyberThrill and XXX banners that I would never conceivably click.

I, for one, appreciate visiting a website where the advertising is actually directed to me, and I've actually been know to click a banner or two.
