    Actually, AC has a point. Spending that much time working/studying is counter-productive and will do more to hold them back. Over a hundred years of working week research and experience has taught us this but still we fail to learn. Perhaps we're just too tired to learn from all that hard working?

How will MS', Apple's, and Google's operating systems distinguish between them in order to decide which to reject and which to accept? This sounds like one of those stupid, ill-informed, half-cock ideas like banning encryption.

    There's a long list of activities that have been shown to slow or mask cognitive decline in the elderly, e.g. reading, being bilingual, learning a second/foreign language, and physical exercise but most of all, social engagement. There have been a number of studies that have shown remarkable improvements in not only cognitive function but also quality of life in retirement homes where they've enacted programmes where small children visit. The residents talk to the children, read them stories, and various other activities. Also beats crappy day-care where the carers barely have enough time to feed and change the children in their care, let alone engage with them socially and play with them.

    In case you haven't noticed, this isn't a new thing by any stretch;

    I didn't say it was. Since the USA and many other countries have managed to clamber their way out of feudalism to the benefit of most of their citizens, it seems such a shame to simply impose it on other countries so that a tiny minority can make a fast buck and tear our achievements asunder in the process.

    "The bottom" is moving production to countries with regimes that either don't have or don't enforce basic human rights or have any kind of effective worker protections. People in those regimes have no choice but to work long hours in dangerous conditions under constant threat of violence and dismissal. Is that what you want to compete with? How about people working under those conditions starting to undercut your job?

    It would seem that the alternative view to conservatism among the IT giants (Google, FB, Twitter, etc.) isn't liberalism but neoliberalism of the free market kind: Silicon Valley was founded mostly by Ayn Rand enthusiasts. Even the "liberal" Jimmy Wales is a self-proclaimed Objectivist and graduate of Chicago School economics (think Milton Friedman who himself was a young protégé of Ayn Rand). The liberal media collapsed in the USA a while back and only exists in a few non-profit, independent, small-scale outlets. But yes, we need all voices and views represented in a democracy.

    AFAIK, the glyphosate patent expired in 2000, not 1994. With "Roundup ready" GMO crops, they've effectively temporarily re-patented glyphosate because you need Roundup resistant GMO plants to survive the extreme quantities of glyphosate that are now necessary to kill naturally evolving Roundup resistant weeds. It's a race against evolution that Monsanto isn't winning.

    If you'd like to know more about Monsanto's evil deeds, you don't have to look very hard. If you want to call reputable investigative journalists and research scientists conspiracy theorists, you can carry on watching Fox News.

    This is double-plus-good news! I'm sure that the algorithm performs wonderfully for all people under all conditions and never misunderstands the communicative intentions of the email writers when it's blatantly obvious to the recipient and other human readers. Computers can definitely understand pragmatic human communication.

    The European Union and its member states have been aggressively pursuing free and open source options in their govt. IT procurement. A number of agencies govt. agencies in several countries have already replaced 100,000's of desktop OS's with various flavours of Ubuntu. This may account for at least some of that increase.

    Yep, agreed. GMOs are pretty much the proxy for Monsanto's on-going evil deeds. Explaining why Monsanto are bad takes too long and demonising GMOs is simply easier. On balance, which does more harm: not getting the likely benefits of GMOs if applied humanely and conscientiously, or allowing Monsanto to drive farmers around the world into bankruptcy and suicide while also spraying it with Roundup; glyphosate's toxicity may be under question at the moment but it's not the only harmful ingredient in Roundup?

    How about we revisit this debate when Roundup is no longer effective due to weeds developing resistance?

    I know that as does probably just about everyone on /. but do you remember how much of a deal the news media made about the terrorists using encrypt during their coverage of the attacks. It now looks like since the initial frenzy is over with that and people have it in their mind that it was because of encryption officials were unable to stop the attacks the media come out stating that they used unencrypted communication but that gets a lot less if any air play or only a brief mention in a small article buried on the inside.

    It's almost as if they were all getting their stories from the same source... ;)

    The Clintons started the massive increase in convicting African Americans for petty, non-violent, often drug-related crimes and successive administrations, both Republican and Democrat, have doubled down on it.

    It's racism, pure and simple.

    NB: Dont' use Google, they're currently surpressing negative search results for HRC for the elections.

    Of course Apple Inc. and Spotify's little legal spat doesn't make much of a difference to the real losers in this, i.e. the people who actually create the content that we want to listen to. The artists get screwed either way.
