Dude DVD replaced VHS. Serious. Think of all the advantages there. Higher quality video, no more rewinding, quickly jump anywhere in the movie, extras, etc etc..
It still took a while for DVD to take off. It didn't happen over night. Tell you what I didn't go spend $1,000 for a DVD player that is for sure.

Few games need the extra space and there aren't many movies (and probably none worth buying).
And forgetting about Blu-Ray for 1 second there is also the fact that games almost have to be completely re-written for the PS3 that means it will probably be the last console to get all of the non-exclusive games AND they will be more expensive.

By then you'll probably have a better idea of what new format will be the standard or the most popular, the players and burners will be a fraction of the cost, the movie lib. will be more developed, etc etc..

Look at the current generation. The PS2 is by far the weakest hardware yet it has the biggest lead by far. In the history of consoles the biggest, best and most expensive hardware has almost always failed.
I'm sure there are exceptions but think back. The leaders in the console race almost never have the best hardware. It's about the games. It always has been about the games and it always will be about the games.
