Over the past few months, I have become friends with some of the core developers of KDE and then some not-so-core developers, but still developers. They convinced me to at least give KDE2 a try. I'd recommend that anyone interested, tries it. Every other Saturday, I run cvsup and update all my KDE2 stuff and recompile it. It's not too hard at all to do. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But it's going to be a great environment when they're through with it. In regards to their timeframe, I have noticed that when I do cvsup, the most edited packages are either kdelibs or kdebase, mostly kdelibs. I do agree, it's an agressive schedule, but I do think that they can complete it. For those who want to try KDE2, but want to keep KDE1.x, when you./configure, make sure you do./configure --prefix=/opt/kde2/ I do that, and it keeps both environments totally separate of eachother. For qt2.1, do --prefix=/opt/qt2.1/ Not too hard, is it?
I notied that M13 was optomized for i686 in the tarball. I run an AMD K6/300, which is an i586. If Mozilla is switching Linux compatibility to only i686, then I will be very upset with them. Can anyone confirm their switch or is there a way around it (besides getting a new processor)?
For the domain hogger award, I think Apple would have been in that category. Anyone remember when some kid from Canada bought a domain and made a little page for the iMac? Apple interrogated him and made him hand over the domain or sue him, or something like that. It's a friggen kid! If that ain't domain hogging, I don't know what is.
My neighbor is a huge Apple fan. He has been with Apple for many years and still is very loyal to them. However, he said that he thinks someone else should take the helm instead of Jobs. He feels that he has done a great job of innovating and getting Apple back on its feet. However, he doesn't feel that Jobs is the best leader for the future. I have heard this from numerous people. Do you believe that Jobs should step down and let someone else take the helm? If so, who do you feel is the best choice for his replacement?
First off, I'd like to appologize for this slightly off-topic comment. However, a few months back, a friend of mine and myself were discussing how misguiding the term 'Uptime' is. Say I am running a corporate server on Linux or BSD. I change a setting on it and suddenly no one can get into webpages outside of the firewall. The computer is still on, but it's not doing jack. I don't consider that up. I personally feel that uptime should be rewritten, to not just calculate how long the computer itself has been on, but how long the server has been able to provide the services it's designed to provide.
Well, a few days ago, I visited fox.com to see if they managed to fix the problem. It appears to have been fixed for at least three or four days. It's really nice to see that Linux is actually getting attention and people are recognizing us as a driving force.
Why is ZDNet comparing NT 4.0 and the latest versions of other operating systems to Linux 2.0.35? That kernel is quite old and lacks a lot of optomizations that the later kernels have.
I read this quote. I apply it to my everyday life cuz the later applies to me: "A nerd is someone whose life revolves around the computer. A geek is someone whose life revolves around the computer and likes it."
I am wondering when Slack 7 will be released on CD. I know last time it took a bit for Cheapbytes to get it on CD. Will CD-ROM.com also have the $1.99 CD's and all for 7.0? Will CD-ROM.com get em faster?
I don't see MS releasing the Windows source code for two reasons. Although, they go hand in hand. 1) They have those precious secret API's which they use. I don't know if they'd want that out. 2) It wouldn't surprize me if MS ripped code from other companies (Apple, etc.). If they opened up the OS, then they would be saying 'WE COPIED CODE!!!'
Linux and Java have one big difference. Linux IS NOT run by one company. Linux is open source, thus in a lot of ways, Linux is owned by everyone that uses it. Yeah, Linus controls it, but he doesn't own it. Java on the other hand, is controlled by Sun Microsystems. All Microsoft had to do was attack Sun itself. Attacking a company is a lot easier than attacking the OS. All Microsoft can do is FUD, and that doesn't appear to work. But, I think the bottom line is that Java is owned by Sun (one company) while Linux isn't owned. That makes it a lot harder to attack and destroy.
Anyone read Rainbow Six, or play the game? They have a device in it which detects heartbeats, even through walls. I don't beleve this is a new technology.
It just won't work. Why not? Does this remind some of us about what we remember of DIVX? You just basically rent it. Don't go telling me that MS won't keep tabs on what we have, what we copy to our hd, etc. I beleve that they're going to watch us. Look where DIVX is now. I beleve rent-an-app is going to lead that same fate soon enough, thank god. Go freeware!
I am sick of everyone saying that they have cracked it and they added a refresh tag. Why don't they spend their time trying to bring down the machine instead of trying to break the guestbook!
Is (s)he the most obnoxious thing on this planet? Can Joe from Europe go to www.pgp.org or.com or whatever their web site is and download PGP or something like that? I don't understand something else. Okay, a terrorist blows up a...building say. Well, lets track it through the computer. I don't really understand that too much. I doubt it's too hard for Ben Ladin to go out and download PGP or something like that. Personally, I think that all these damn laws on encryption export should be lifted. They can't justify them. Have the phone companies try to justify long distance charges. They'll give the same old generic answer, maintenance. They don't have reasons. Oh yeah, someone get Reno a razor or something like that, she needs to shave.
Hey. I am kind of pissed off about this. I can't beleve I'd need to see a fricken ad when I bootup. Anyways, I was shown a new BIOS manufacturer. Maybe we should check em out, and get their name known. Check em out at: HTTP://WWW.MRBIOS.COM

RH 6.2 has been on the FTP for weeks under their Rawhide directory. This is nothing new.

They're saying that Linux can be stored in ROM so a hard disk is not needed.

I am wondering if this is part of a deal with the DOJ. Anyone have any idea if the DOJ can force him to step down?
It appears that the binaries are >1 gb...unless I read that wrong. Is that a little big?

It appears that the verdict won't be announced, but what has been found out in the case will be announced. Is this going to be a verdict?

Besides cDc being a major organization at the Defcon conventions, does cDc plan on hosting its own convention?

What is the time estimate on this? I run Slack 4, and am itching for Slack 5 with glibc2, amongst other additions :) Kevin

It looks like it isn't forwarding anymore. Did this 'break the rules' and MS had to fix it?
