The Ximian hackers are still together. As a matter of fact, they moved into some really nice new offices in Cambridge from Boston. They are still doing what they do best.

Evolution: 2.0 is due out this year. It's awesome. It required a ton of work and most of the people who did 1.0 are doing 2.0, they're still there.

Ximian Desktop: Wait and see for this one. You'll see.

Connector: GPL'd. This surely isn't a bad thing from the open source community's point of view, is it?

Yes, maybe some of the branding is gone and the name Ximian isn't used as much, but it doesn't mean Ximian is dead. Far from it.

I am a student at Northern Michigan University. We have had a similar such program for the past 4 or 5 years. The school distributes IBM ThinkPads too all professors and students with 12 or more credit hours during a semester. It's really not a bad program. It has a few pitfalls though:
    • The laptops they hand out are the low end models. I am using an iSeries laptop, which is not the prettiest machine I've used in my life. They have recuring problems.
    • The tech support on campus tends to be run by students who don't know what they're talking about. The people who do the repairs are focused on making the school a profit (obviously) thus give hassles for repairs. I know this isn't that different than how real tech support is, but if the school is going to force you to have a laptop, they should provide quality tech support too.
    • It becomes hard to pay attention in dull classes when I am able to hack ;)

All in all though, it's a good program that I commend the University of Florida for taking up. Now only if I got an iBook instead of the ThinkPad :)

First, Red Hat provides the Red Hat Network which is a competitor to Ximian's Red Carpet CorporateConnect.

Second, Red Hat provides "priority downloads" with the Red Hat Network, so you can download packages from Red Hat faster. Ximian on the other hand, offers Red Carpet Express to help speed up Red Carpet downloads.

    • ApplixWare — Closed source
    • Corels Office Suite — Not supported anymore, is it?
What I'm getting at is a couple items. First off, Gnumeric has been around longer than a lot of them. If you read the release announcement which was _just_ sent, you'd learn that Gnumeric has been around for 3.5 years. Second, it's _the_ spreadsheet program which didn't have a history of non-GPL issues. KSpread is relativly new. And anyways, that has the history with qt not being GPL compliant. Anyways, if you look at Gnumeric, it's one of the more mature of the spreadsheet applications.

It even thread them for me (threading isnt properly working totally right now). I haven't taken an Evolution email box and had mutt open it. But let me try that now. Second, there are interests for Evolution to have a web front-end that would integrate into Evolution. We can argue all day about who has better themes, thats not the issue here. The issue is the wording. If anything, you'd think that legacy would be something down the line of KDE1 themes, as they're out of date basically, with the new KDE2 engines. But theres still plenty of GTK themes being created, and it's not out of date. I like both KDE and GNOME, but I don't feel that their wording is appropriate at all. I see it as a subtle insult to GNOME, geared towards new users, to steer them away from GNOME.

These "several girls" including Katy, are criticing the gaming industry. The guys run the computer industry and the gaming industry (as this article implies). We rule it, so it makes sense we'll make games that appeal to us. I think the women will need to bite the bullet for now, put up with the bloody games, and get into the industry. By sitting here and crying about the blood, and not doing anything about it, isn't going to help. If the girls sit on their butt, doing what they like to do, then nothing is going to change. All the more power to them if they do. But they currently have rewritten khtml again for Konqueror. It would be nice to see engine switching in KDE2, but I wouldn't put too much cash on it.
