this internet boom is exactly what it is... a boom... and like all booms they become diluted and more spread out. Everybody pays a whole lot of attention to a boom, but not its' after effects. The internet will eventually become as widespread as telephone service, and people will stop obsessing over it.

Where would the world be now without the Internet? I'm sure the stock market would be doing so well without those day traders. We would still be under the opression of shopping from local retail stores when we know that "Widgets Inc. of Some town far away" has your widgets for half price. Also where would Linux be without the internet? Widespread open source development would be nearly impossible, and we would all be paying $79.99 for Redhat 6.1 (of course we cold still burn copies).

I just think the internet isn't harming society at all. At the time people in Europe said Gutenburg Printing Press is making people read too much when they could be out farming. What they didn't know is that advanced farming techniques were coming from Africa by way of printed books. The internet will better civilization and we won't even know it in our lifetime.

Sony and Nintendo can live together. The have since the playstation came out. Sony has all the older population who is more into games like parasite eve, and the Final Fantasy series, while Nintendo has the "cute" factor. The mascots of Nintendo (eg. Pokemon, Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda) all appeal to a younger audience (although I catch myself pulling $100 out of my wallet to buy a color gameboy and pokemon blue every now and then).

The article made a good point about how some companies might shy away from developing for the playstation 2 becuase of the simple fact that you will need a masters degree in PSX2 development to do anything astounding. Although in all actuality big compaines like Square will always impress us with whatever they can wrench out of the console. Weren't you guys seriously impressed with the FF7 FMV's? That was groundbreaking... The people I talked to about it didn't even know the PSX could handle that type of graphics.

Anyway... all I'm saying is, a console is only worth its games. If the PSX2 is too hard to make visually stunning games, then the Dolphin will get a larger market share. The dreamcast will always have its place becuase there are die hard sega users that won't have anything else.

These people have no idea what the standards are for Linux software. These warnings are unacceptable. This is very unlike "business solutions" software being ported to different OSes. The only business software that works on both windows and MAC is sad to say is made by microsoft. They rewrite the code from scratch, and it works great.

On the other hand, in the world of design software, Adobe and Macromedia's software is horrible on the windows platform. I hate to say this, but companies should take the microsoft approach and rewrite it from scratch.

Also, someone should tell the makers of halflife that they should opensource the engine, and let the public port it to any OS they please. They still retain the rights to all the other pieces of software in the package. I don't understand why companies just don't opensource the important parts of the software.
