Yes it does. If it's not Free (as in speech) then it's not Open, it would be closed.

Simply because you can see the code does not make it open source, you have to be able to modify it and also share those modifications for it to be open.

Ahh, but this isn't exactly whats happening in FFXI. Basically a few NPCs in the three major towns (San D'Oria, Bastok and Windurst) are "dressed up" as monsters, you give them sweet treats (like chocolate, pies or fruit) and they will either give you a halloweenish item or turn you into a monster.

The monster costumes they give you are enhancements which can be "clicked off" or wear off when you go to another zone, say, outside of town. Since no battles can be had in town then there's no user controlled fighting monsters.

For example, they probobly DO still censor religious symbols in games (especially those rated "Everyone") because despite the so-called "tolerance" in the US, there are still a lot of people who would complain (and rightly so in some cases) about religious symbols in a video game with no warnings that they are there.

I'm almost in disbelief that this was even said, here, on slashdot.

What is so offensive about religious symbols that they have to be removed or people warned? I am not a Christian, I am not a Catholic, I'm more along the lines of Agnostic however I don't think there is one religious symbol out there that would offend me in any way shape or form and I have a hard time believing they would offend others. Yeah, it's a cross, big fucking deal.

I currently play FFXI, and I did play in the WoW stress. I liked WoW better for a number of reasons:

    1. Solo at any level.
    2. Making money in game is not a chore and isn't a huge pain in the ass like it is in FFXI, especially with the chinese gil farmers.
    3. Everything about the game is fun, there are no parts that I dreaded doing but had to do to continue on with the fun parts.
    4. PvP is just WAY TOO FUN in WoW. FFXI's lame attempt at PvP, Ballista, is so horrible, many jobs dont even have a hope in hell (thief, summoner, white mage) but this is not the case in WoW, every job can contribute and fight any other job.

Unles Squeenix gets rid of the gil farmers I'm going to have to dump it, I can't make enough game money to actually play it because the gil farmers have monopolized every source of income, and I'm not buying gil from them just to play a game I already pay for.

Government is "For, by and of the people" is it not? Governments raise money by taxes. Governments are instituted to *serve* the people, not the other way around. If the government buys, creates, obtains or in any way has in their possession information of any sort then that information belongs to the people and should be given to them when requested, period. Need is not an issue and having a government who can say "you can't have it, but you can" is very dangerous as you've just turned your government into an aristocracy.

This is not true. Safty concerns cause governments to regulate working hours. You want bigrig truck drivers on the road 16-20 hours at a time, falling asleep and causing accidents? You want to work with a 12 hour shift forklift operator who's getting tired making mistakes handling heavy skids?

IT is not immune either, the more time at the keyboard the quicker your wrists will degrade. You don't want the state to have to pay more for your, and everyone elses, medicare just because you worked 2 hours more a shift for 25 years, do you?
