  1. Mismanagement on Do Long Work Hours Affect Code Quality? · · Score: 2, Interesting
What's truly astounding is that the same managers, who were at pains to hire the brightest people they could find, think that those same people won't figure out what a fraud that is.

This is the part that has always amazed me. How can they ask you to do something this stupid with a straight face?

My last boss caused me great pain with such stupidity. One of my Debian buddies sent me a good explanation after I spent the afternoon complaining about it. That PHB did not even understand that laying me off was actually a reward. My nerves are finally starting to recover and I should be able to kick-ass on my next job ;-)

You need to read the Moderation Guidelines again. This type of attitude breaks the system. It takes time to read all those posts below 2 but the gems down there are worth it. If you do not have the time to do this properly, you should let those points expire. What you describe is more of a popularity contest.

I just want to make it clear that a professional will be more thorough and responsible to their customer. That is what they are being paid for. Anyone can ask for 'money for nothin' ...

This does not sound very professional to me. You leech off the Debian archives without keeping your own copy? You expect them to keep a copy available on the net for future use? How much did you pay for this service?

It makes me wonder what profession you think you are practicing.

This new system is 2-3 times faster than my dual Pentium III Coppermine system. It is amazing to see these 1.2 Ghz Athlons cream the 1.0 Ghz Pentium III chips. I regret buying that D6VAA motherboard now :(

I did not like the bandwidth problems SETI kept running into. I decided my spare cpu cycles would be better spent elsewhere. I share the same concern others have expressed about how the medical research data will be used. Some companies think they can patent my genes :(

I recommend that people look at all of the distributed projects. I suggest that you can support more than one. We can learn from all of them.

An affinity system would really take this to the next level. By using it, you can read exactly the slashdot that you want to read, and the crapflooders can read exactly the slashdot they want to read without some informative posts emerging above their thresholds. Combined with multiple account tracking and central trusted/untrusted user lists (for example, the editor's friends and foes), and you have a very sophisticated automated system of filtering. This could really improve discussion quality, and allow slashdot to scale even a larger user base.

So, this allows Slashdot to scale just like the web. Instead of someone like Google coming along to index everything, the system has builtin filters.

I guess to sum up, there's a big difference between ranking posts by content versus who's saying it.

For all you know, someone else might look a lot better just because they got an easier task.

Good point. And you may find yourself unemployed because such a boss makes that decision. We all have to make our own choices because we will be the ones who live with the results. There are too many examples of people who slaved their lives away for paper (the green kind ;-) and died shortly after retirement.
