  1. Non open-source CMS no good ? on How To Choose An Open Source CMS · · Score: 1

I know I digress a bit, but sometimes an open-source solution is not the choice for everyone. A lot of clients I talk to have no technical knowledge, and want a CMS to be able to update the website easily. They have no idea how to install it or to maintain it. Some of them prefer "buying" a product, than buying lots of services.

Then again, it really depends on the demographic. If it's a student putting up a website and he has all the time in the world, I guess an open source CMS is the preferred solution.

Of course, I'm biased, I work for this CMS vendor :) But it has a license you can pay in cash or code

All the people seriously concerned with performance. In recent slashdot articles and various KDE mailing list posts, it was analyzed that the memory and loading times of C++ programs needed serious improvement, especially on the linker and compiler side.

I sincerely hope GCC and LD will be fixed soon because its really a shame to have such a great system as Linux being bogged down by multiple copies of libraries in RAM...

  10. Best advice for enterpreneurs... on An Inside Look at Venture Capitalists · · Score: 1

The best thing to protect a company against investors that are just being too pushy is to make it very clear to them that you only need them in order for them to make money, but that you could clearly do this slower, but without the added benefit that they would get.
This way you make sure your planning stands on two grounds : with or without VC money, and you make it much harder for VCs to pressure you into doing things which are totally stupid.
But this suggestion is definitely not easy to realize, but if you can have it you will probably stand your ground with a stable company for a long time ! It will also help your valuation a lot.

  17. This really works on Play Region 1 DVDs On A Japanese PS2 · · Score: 2

At first I couldn't believe it, but after a few unsuccessful tries, I can confirm this "hack" really works !!!

So far it's not a complete success though, a lot of titles will not work (such as Armageddon, Tomorrow Never Dies and others), while some don't work correctly (only menu navigation works) and some others don't work at all (including zone 2 PAL DVDs).

Anyway I have hope that if the feature is there it means it is possible, it just needs to be perfected. My guess is that there is an ultimate manipulation to be done which should unlock all DVDs.

Oh, and yes I did try with Dual Layer DVDs (Saving Private Ryan) and that didn't seem to cause any problems.

While I am at it, I live in Europe and here we can plug in RGB signals through Peritel cables. Well, the news is that the Peritel cables that worked for the Playstation 1 also work for the Playstation 2 !! The great thing about this is that the quality is MUCH improved using the RGB signals !

  18. We need a linux platform now more than ever ! on Motorola Releases HA Linux · · Score: 3

With major hardware makers, software companies wanting to release their own distributions, I think we should really call again for a linux "standard" distribution, in order to make things such as Oracle distributions possible.

Otherwise we risk to go the way of the UNIX's splits, where basically each UNIX is it's own platform, and this is going to scare people off real quick.

I'm all for innovation and stuff, but not at the cost of loosing my favorite current platform. This is why I think SGI did the right thing by creating a Linux Powerpack that comes on top of a Redhat distribution. It's less work for them (they don't have to take care of the whole distribution) and it's more reassuring for the users and the software makers that don't have to worry too much about yet another distribution.

I think people have been overlooking the potential importance of the story poster's comment about giving an advantage to Europe. Europe's GSM networks are highly developped and high-quality, and I wouldn't be surprised that part of the battle for the control will happen there rather than in the good ol' US of A.

I was at the Telecom 1999 gathering in Geneva and I heard from both Bill Gates and Larry Ellison that they are betting Europe could be leading the way to mobile applications.

Oh and weather it's WAP or not I don't really care, as long as it's XML based :)
