  14. When the internet allows you to fairly easily and quickly fact check the fact checkers themselves and determine that every last site has some bias and often blurs or distorts facts and interpretations to their particular point of view it is obvious that "fake" is an unrealistically broad term to have a meaningful discussion or debate on this topic. I have gotten some very useful and possibly highly accurate information from some so-called "fake" news sites while I have received information of very low or questionable accuracy quite frequently from "mainstream" news sites. To me it proves nothing other than every source of information has an opinion, an axe to grind and I need to be knowledgeable and question the veracity and quality of all information I access.

  16. Why? on Should We Seed Life On Alien Worlds? (sciencemag.org) · · Score: 1

I find it kind of amusing that we are so taken with ourselves as a species that we can't imagine that life is probably quite capable of accomplishing that already. And it may well explain how we (meaning all life on earth) got here in the first place. The amazing thing about life is not the organisms themselves but the attainment of the right conditions for it to flourish. Phages or a similar simple organism may simply be a long term transport for the chemical seeds of life. The "accidents" of meteors and other space material falling to earth may be the way these seeds get exchanged. And probably only the most simplistic forms of life are worth transporting due to the time/distance and the vastly different conditions for survival, so only base life needs seeding. Then the conditions present dictate the direction and velocity of the evolutionary process.

  18. The correct option given the circumstances on Using a Bomb Robot to Kill a Suspect Is an Unprecedented Shift in Policing (vice.com) · · Score: 1

I have no idea why many people are appalled. This was the correct and safest option to halt the shooter and stop the threat to police and civilians. The shooter made no bones about stating that he wanted to "kill white people, especially cops". So at that point the police know the intention and have to respond with appropriate force after shootings/murders occurred to keep themselves and the public safe. If he had been in an enclosed area the option to use non-lethal force like tear gas may have been used but he was in a garage (open air space) where that was not a viable option. The Philando shooting was horrible but responding in kind as a domestic terrorist does nothing but make the situation worse.

"The first test of the rocket was conducted in 2009. The next test is scheduled for 2017 with the project expected to be completed in 2018. It's only a matter of time before such high-speed transportation technology is implemented into our infrastructure. Last week, Hyperloop One conducted a successful test of its high speed transportation technology in the desert outside Las Vegas." Not sure I really understand the comment. We already had supersonic flights that simply were not economically sustainable. Too few passengers and much higher aircraft and maintenance costs + limited airport access meant a failed business model. Maybe 30-40 years from now when the Hypersonic aircraft costs and airport construction allows greater access we could see commercial access to Hypersonic travel. For the near future, like others have stated I think more passengers would pay more for higher speed internet communications and more spacious comfortable seating options on standard flights. I'd say commercial Mach 5 flights will arrive about the same time as the flying cars.

  24. Is he taking Reverend Wright with him? According to his Pastor we dropped the bomb and 'didn't bat an eyelash' about it. They forget to mention the decision was made (one I happen to agree with) by a Democrat President, Harry Truman. Unfortunately, for all of us we don't have any more Democrats like that (or Republicans for that matter) who can make painfully difficult military decisions focused on the total outcome of human lives effected instead of how it effects them or their party politically or how the world may view the action. And it is rarely discussed how much communication took place to Japan's leadership describing the potential damage and capabilities of the weapon. The dropping of millions of leaflets that could not be suppressed by Japanese military leadership helped force the emperor to accept defeat and in the end certainly limited casualties on both sides. It is still a sad statement that the conflict had to resort to such a devastating weapon, nonetheless.

  25. When will people start talking about the real 'unscientific' remedies being touted as 'solutions'. You don't need to be much of a scientist to recognize these politically motivated economic changes are basically more about rewarding industries with political ties than providing real scientific facts to show these or any actions can have a measurable effect on halting or reversing the stated effect. Try getting some research funded for that and you will see this is all a political charade.
