"Although the complicity of scientists in the smuggling of radioactive materials has been a long-standing concern"
First I've heard of this, what are the names of these scientists caught smuggling of radioactive materials? I do believe we're in greater danger from nation states selling actual nuclear bombs to other nation states.
Slashdot is getting as bad as the conventional tech press in your inability to mention the Operating System that the vast majority of these cyber-attacks run on or require to vector the malware onto peoples 'computers'.
'WIRED published a long piece on.. "MonsterMind," an NSA program to monitor all network traffic and detect attacks, responding with a counterattack automatically. From the article:'

Not that it matters, for example, that tolower("AT") should properly return "at", "a(cyrillic t)" or "(alpha)(tau)" depending on whether it was originally typed in English, Russian or Greek."
Have one set of 'code points' for every language on the planet and remove the duplicates. That way they wouldn't have needed to hack unicode in order to allow for the following:
'the code point U+006E (the Latin lowercase "n") followed by U+0303 (the combining tilde "") is defined by Unicode to be canonically equivalent to the single code point U+00F1 (the lowercase letter "ñ" of the Spanish alphabet)' ref
"From what I remember, the tattoo was supposed to be abstract enough that no one would recognize it as the prison unless they knew to look for it."
What about that feller "Haywire" they put him in the same cell as Wentworth Miller, he spotted what the tattoo was. That's why they had to bring him with them. Haywire later on escaped and went round like the street numbers man off Sesame Street. Bicycling round, dressed in white overalls and sporting a football helmet 1:09 ref.. so as he wouldn't get noticed:)
And so this "standard" was designed in this way because country A didn't want it's script mixed up with country B, introducing vulnerabilities into the DNS system in the process. As in '' '' and 'A' all encode to different unicode er.. codes.
And just as unrealistic, I mean wouldn't a tattoo of the prison layout on your back be a bit of a givaway.

"When Americans voted for the House of Representatives in 2012, Democratic candidates won 1.4 million more votes than Republicans. Yet after the dust settled, the GOP ended up with a 234-201 majority in the chamber. And several recently-gerrymandered states had particularly odd results — for instance, in Pennsylvania, Republicans won 49 percent of the votes, but 69 percent of the seats."

'Singaporeans speak, often reverently, of the "social contract" between the people and their government. They have consciously chosen to surrender certain civil liberties and individual freedoms in exchange for fundamental guarantees: security, education, affordable housing, health care.'
No different than here then, except our government is busy selling off what don't belong to them, so as we can buy it back again. Some people seem to have forgotten the fact that governments don't guarantee anything, we hire them and they work for us.
Is 'Ken Starks' for real? For instance, the Austin School board has no knowledge of a Karen or any incident involving a pupil and a Linux CD. See slashdot of Dec 2008. See also this blog from Dec 2008. And also The Register of Dec 2008.
"I couldn't watch the first episode. Quit maybe 10 minutes into it. Does anyone here actually enjoy the show and think it's any good?"
I stayed with it and watched a number of episodes, I thought it caught the techie zeitgeist brilliantly. There's even a semi-aspie tech tycoon in there, just like you-know-who.
“Some people might have been providing a vulnerability on purpose in order to do something nasty.. Who are they working with? Do they have sideline jobs somewhere else? The developers might be getting their dollars from ad networks"
Is this what slashdot has been reduced to, regurgitating anti Open Source FUD on behalf of a most probably a false-front for the MICROS~1 organization?
Did you just say 'focus', how did it come to this that a cutting edge technology site is reduced to spouting free slasterverts for the MICROS~1 organization..
