But, the fact is that OS/2 has never been as critical to IBM's success as Window's is to Microsoft. IBM is a much larger, much different kind of company than Mirosoft. OS/2 is just one of thousands of products, not by any means a core IBM product. It's easy to imagine an IBM without OS/2, but not a Microsoft without Windows.
That is true, IBM was concentrating on its mainframe business at that time. OS/2 never really got to the support from IBM management that it should have gotten.
But remember, back then if you bought a PeeCee you got a "FREE" copy of Windows something or the other. The preloads killed OS/2 because IBM tried to SELL it.
IBM should have thought "loss-leader" and given the OS and development tools away. If the OS is free and tools are available for it people would be willing to use it and write apps for it.
Hmmm... that strategy sounds a little familar...:-)
If that is the blue spine edition I think it was early 95. I picked up "OS/2 Warp for Windows" (the red spine) around October 94.
The red spine did not come with Windows, so it required that you have a copy of Windows if you wanted to run Win apps and had the TCP/IP stack separate. Warp Connect had the TCP/IP stack integrated into the OS and came with a copy of Windows.
That takes me back. That was the same period that IBM showed the infamous Nun commercials for Warp and consumers where saying "WTF?":->
Ive used burnt windows CD's to install without running into a problem - but Red Hat has always barfed - and doesn't let you recover at all.
I hate to tell old geezer stories but I actually remember having to download 40+ floppies worth of Slackware over a 9600 bps modem. Inevitably one or two of the floppies would crap out -- talk about recovery after botched installation nightmares.
The cool thing is back then all you needed was a login shell and the text editor of your choice. If you "Read The Fine Manuals" you could figure out what file to edit and you could fix things yourself. Today I mainly configure my Mandrake box using a shell and text editor -- old habits die hard.
Recovery procedures also depend on where the Linux installation process prematurely ended. If you have gone most of the way through you can boot a rescue image from the CDROM, mount the partition and go to town. If you can figure out how to use the command line as root you should be able to get the affected system to boot. If not then there is always Windows...
Perhaps if IBM had done things Microsoft's way, the world would be a different place.
You mean IBM should have emulated Microsoft's monopolistic behavior? IBM could not engage in such behavior because it was under DOJ oversight due to the consent decree it signed with the US government in the 1970s...
Jeez, doesn't anyone study HISTORY anymore???
For better or worse, I cannot say.
Some bad, some good. I used to run OS/2 Warp, which let you run Windows in a virtual machine, and life was good (when Windows crashed the VM would reboot, not the entire machine). The bad began when OS/2 started falling behind due to lack of apps and I had to wander the Windows wasteland for a while.
For me Linux couldn't have come at a better time. Going to Win98 from Warp was a big letdown and Linux helped fill the void. It has steadily improved in function and useability to where it is a viable OS choice. Now I can run Windows in a virtual machine under Linux and life is even better (though admittedly Windows does not crash as much as it used to in the old days).
The reason? The plethora of free development tools for Linux! I feel that had IBM released some free (or even cheap) development tools for OS/2 this sad story would have had a different, much happier ending...
Is using frontpage to make an anti-Microsoft web site stealing?
That sounds like Captain Kirk logic there -- an oxymoronic contradiction intended to crash the computer!:->
IMO, if you want to write anti-MS webpages at least do it right and do it on a Linux box or a Mac! And if you HAVE to do it on Winblows, at least use gvim!!!
At any rate, if you do business with SBC, I'd strongly recommend that you opt-out [sbc.com] of having your calling records used for marketing purposes.
Is the CPNI opt-out some sort of California regulatory action or something? The link you provided only covers PacBell and if you search the SBC website and look for a personal info opt-out for the old Southwestern Bell (including Texas) there is nothing there.
SBC are bastards deluxe. When I signed up for DSL months ago they were advertising 384 Kbps minimum speeds. I have only gotten over 300 Kbps TWICE in that period.
A friend of mine who lives nearby only gets 150 Kbps! We both live in a barrio, maybe I need to poll DSL customers here in North Houston to see if there is a pattern of substandard service in minority neighborhoods.
If there is I am sure the Texas Public Utility Commission would like to hear about it, but seeing as how Texas is "governed" by pro-business Republican assholes I am not holding my breath...
Stopping a person for a burned-out license plate light may seem like a chicken-shit stop... until you come up to the driver's window and smell the weed
If all you get is someone smoking weed then that is still a chicken-shit stop. The sad fact is that many cops would rather bust a pothead than go after real criminals, as it is less work for them that way.
And your anecdotes are not enough to prove your point. Unless you have hard statistics proving your point that you catch a substantial number of criminals through traffic stops it is just an opinion based on anecdotal evidence.
I am so glad these people dont make cars, they'd just crash a year after purchase in order to make you buy a new one. Oh, wait a minute, didnt ford explorers do that...
Don't forget the old Ford Pinto, also known as the Firebomb!
Call the person a terrorist, and it immediately makes you righteous, right?
I think Lord Omlette is making a comment that there should be a corollary to Godwin's Law, except you get called a "terrorist" instead of "nazi".
I personally, would argue that what Intuit is doing is a removal of property, since they are removing usable access from a program that is one's property.
You should read your EULAs more closely, most commercial software you only lease and you don't own the program, the software company does.
So why should you be forced to TRUST a company.
Because then you are not a good consumer. Or in the case of the government, a patriotic citizen.
If you are willing to move your accounting over to a webapp, check out NOLA. It uses PHP and MySQL and is free and GPLed. I looked at it a few months ago and it seemed promising, I need to grab the current code and see how it looks now...
I just don't understand it. 'Crossing Over' which really can't be all that well watched gets tons of air time.
It is cheap to produce, you can have 10 people in the audience and still make money off of the commericals.
The Sci-Fi network people are idiots, they cancel the Invisible Man and Farscape and show John Edward? Either that or they are cheap bastards!
Just for that I started to boycott Sci-Fi, plenty of other stuff on the other channels in addition to HBO, Showtime, Movie Channel, Encore, etc. It's too bad I don't have a Nielsen box...
This is a pretty funny comment, how in the world did some moderator find this flamebait?
I did not use (and thus lost) 5 mod points over the last couple of days due to finals, someone please mod this up!

Win Mac Linux BSD Unix Cowboy Neal ate my OS.
I think that checkboxes would work better than radio buttons for a question like this.
I run Windows under Linux using VMWare. Linux works fine for about 90% of the sites but for those time you really need to use Windows VMWare does the trick.
You can also run Linux under Linux. I even got Lunar Linux to boot and compile in a VM running on Mandrake 9. To me it is pretty cool not having to have dedicated PCs to play around with OSes and networking.
VMWare even lets you run BSD in a VM running on Linux. I need to download me some BSD ISOs to see what all the fuss is about...
I have to admit that as far as logos go, Chuck kicks ass!:->
Problem is, in the Real World you can't just ignore them. Case in point, said co-worker was asked to setup a samba server on linux. He had no problems setting up the server, but even *mapping a drive* from windows to test the server took him hours since he knew so little about windows. Like it or not, Microsoft has a MAJOR foothold in the PC and server world...
I do computer support for a community college for a living and have to deal with Windows on the job. I prefer Linux and run Mandrake at home and on my work desktop. I also get to manage a 5 PC 2K multimedia lab and to me, 2K/XP is OK when it comes to support. The big problem is the costs associated with it and for software that runs on it.
I have noticed that Microsoft forces you to get constant training on doing it their way, which adds to the cost. All to learn stupid sh*t like the fact that Windows boots from the system partition and runs from the boot partition.
To me, "best tools" should include ANY tool that helps me accomplish what I need to accomplish with my PC.
If I could afford to give MS money I would update from Win98 (under VMWare) at home. How many billions does MS have in the bank anyway? At work where they pay for the software and handle the licensing I will run whatever they want but I hate not being able to get tasks done because of funding issues.
That is the nice thing about running Linux, if you need any sort of software for any sort of task, it you can get it, compile it and try it out. Sometimes it not be be greatest quality but sometimes you get a Mozilla or Open Office.
Think of Microsoft as your corner crack dealer. You may not approve of what he does, and yes, if you ignore him he probably won't try to sell you crack.. But hey, if you need some crack, he's the only place you're gonna find it.
That is a pretty good analogy. If you put it in those terms, when people ask for free tech support tell them that you are not an "enabler" of negative behavior -- using Windows!:->
If you were confronted by someone who had just lost a bunch of important data because of this exploit, do you really think they'd be impressed if you said "But I was trying to make a very important point to Microsoft!".
But why be pissed off at the script kiddie? It seems that Microsoft is the one to blame here if their OS cannot protect important files for you. Be pissed-off at M$ instead!
For the particularly insightful Microsoft-loving PHBs this could be an ephipany moment -- a combination of enough licensing/cost issues plus major security problems could make it too much bother to run Windows. The PHB looks over at the multi-proc Unix boxes handling terabyte-sized Oracle databases and a little lightbulb goes off over the PHB's head...
But remember, back then if you bought a PeeCee you got a "FREE" copy of Windows something or the other. The preloads killed OS/2 because IBM tried to SELL it.

Regular news sites never admit to being biased even if they are. At least slashdot is upfront about its bias...
If you don't want to see the sigs, you can turn them off in user preferences.
As far as the comments making sense, your on your own!
