People buy them, people illegally record on them too. So what? I think that the industry is happy with the fact that people are legally downloading stuff and now they should stop all the whining about the the other folks who don't, and get over it.
You would think something like the VHS tape would destroy the movie industry. Just like downloading music has destroyed the music industry.
My story is sorta strange... I left a well known "problem bar" and was followed for 7 miles by a policeman who finally pulled me over in a grocery store parking lot.
His reason: My windows were too tinted.
( I guess I did every other thing legaly for 7 miles )
My misfortune?: I was over the legal limit.
It sucks and now I don't drive...
Oh well...
I faxed a copy of the article to the Maui public defenders office..
Actually, we are moving dangerously close to why America exists in the first place.
I got into an argument with a barteneder not to long ago. He said you must have an ID or I can't server you. I agreed. But the I mentioned that technically we live in an ID-less society. He called me a dumbass and said you MUST carry ID at all times...
I asked him when the last time someone ever got CONVICTED for not having ID.
He said they can hold you for 72 hours...
I said again... What is the charge? What is the sentence? For not having ID?
Listening to all that "End Times" bullshit again. I had enough of it during Y2K. I getting too much of it now.. Imagine what it's going to be like in 2037?
It is a interesting choice isn't it? Refurbish a fantastic scientific tool for a couple billion dollars ( which I think we can afford ) or save that money.
If we could use that couple billion dollars instead toward a year 2005 replacement for Hubble then let it fall and lets get a better one up there.
If we are just going to let the scope die and not replace it. I say we fix it instead.
"Most "tech gurus" I've talked to at my university about the benefites of 64bit processing say that it is in part due to the increase of the number of registers (allowing you to use more at the same time, shortening the number of cycles needed)."
Not just kernels. All programs.. however this happens in the compiler. Or assembly code. Not in "kernels" unless they are assembly code kernels..
Basically this test is moot without using compilers optimized for the 64 bit chips..
"That magpie attitude, according to Microsoft, is mutual. Red Hat's decision to end support for its free software and the Novell-SuSE link-up have put the last nail in the coffin of the free-software model,...."
Linux will continue to do what it is doing in anycase. In Redhat's case it is called Fedora. For the rest of us it is called Debian or Slackware.
GNU will keep the rest of the "whole package" going.
This is a very strange form of Embrace and Extend. Is MS-Linux coming soon?
This kind of stuff is what would have happened if Microsoft and IBM had not destroyed "choice" back in the day.
Wouldn't it be cool if Commodore and Atari and Texas Instruments made some kinda comeback. The internet was a web of completly different platforms all talking via internet standards. Amigas, Macs and OS2 machines. No Linux/Unix vrs Microsoft.
I hope this kinda stuff continues. Even if it is just for fun.
"Perhaps the beginning of a solution to the lag between memory and interconnect speed versus cpu frequency?"
Thank God! This was something that used to keep me up at all hours of the night. A solution to this problem will change the world. It may even stop the RIAA from suing young girls and stop global warming. Thank you for letting me sleep at night once again.
WTF?

Good god, you are right about this..
"The Loral Skynet site has no mention of this yet, but supposedly Telstar 8 was already scheduled to replace T4"
"Instead, the music industry is divided over the use of computer hardware called autotuners, used by acts such as Britney Spears and ''N Sync to make sweeter music on the days when they can't quite hit those tricky notes."
Do yourself a favor. Buy a copy of Abbey Road on vinyl And listen to music they way it was and shall never be again. Be sad. Very very sad.
Damn good point actually.
If I am downloading a song that I already own. ( And I have done this ) isn't it fair use? Sorta?
Am I being counted as not legal?

You can choose not to move during your turn.
i.e. You can "pass"
Can you do that in chess?

Now I think he may be right.

This is a nightmare.... I am sorry.
Reminds me of what Torvalds said about SCO.
Something about "smoking crack".

If microsoft managed to find a way to make money off of spammers then "geeks" who don't currently spam now, may start doing so just to mess with them.
Sort of like trying to thwart the microsoft security initiative.
I am not saying it is right, but that it would happen.
However, spam is a problem. It is almost impossible to have a "permanent" address anymore and that sucks.
I would like to hear about solutions that don't involve paying microsoft anything.

I create a very simple C file, which I call hello.c:
main()

printf("Hello!\n");

Watch out... SCO owns this bit of code too...

I like live performances too. Archive.Org is a great place to get live concert music. Big Heat Todd and the Monsters, Little Feat etc..
As far as this: "P.S. Don't steal music." I disagree in a similar way that RMS would disagree with: "P.S. Don't steal software."
If you don't want us listening to your music. Don't fucking play it.
Otherwise I just might be recording your concert.
