Private companies only do things that are profitable, obviously. Where exactly is the profit in exploration? Where is the profit in studying geologic samples from Mars? How about developing technology like the Hubble telescope or various deep space probes to obtain images of distant planets and stars?

The problem is that the motivations of private enterprise are completely different from publicly funded organizations. In other words, NO RESEARCH will ever be done by ANY company that does not have a direct link to some sort of profitability in the future. To those who believe that economics is the only important aspect of society (i.e. some Libertarians I know), this probably doesn't sound so bad, but it certainly seems like an overly narrow-minded approach to science to me.

Well, I don't know, maybe English isn't your native language, in which case I don't want to be too hard on you here, but if it is, you REALLY need some help with comprehension:

First of all, the person is not illegal. The person is an "illegal alien". Context is important in understanding phrases. In this case, the phrase "illegal alien" could be defined as "unregistered foreigner". The legality of the person is not addressed, but rather the legality of their status as a foreigner within U.S. borders.

Second point. You've confused the meaning of the word alien. For instance, online dictionary Hyperdic lists as the primary definition of this word:

A person who comes from a foreign country. Someone who does not owe allegiance to your country.

Well, it's been fun, but I have to get back to "work" now. Bye!

Yes, but the DMCA basically assumes (temporarily) the guilt of the accused - if a copyright owner asserts that you are in violation, you are expected, under the law, to remove the offending content, immediately - it's like an instant temporary restraining order.

So looking at it that way, the DMCA is to blame, in this case.

Why is Slashdot not "the media"?

    1. Slashdot usually does not write articles. Exceptions would be occasional interviews and book reviews. Slashdot posts articles that are written by "the media" in general.

    2. Slashdot is too specifically focused to be "the media". Only techies tend to read it - even technical magazines have a much wider audience than slashdot.

#2 is certainly debatable; I could be wrong - but really, when you consider #1, how can you call Slashdot "the media"?

I had read a damn book on divorce law before I went, too.

Finally, I paid a lawyer $50 and he told me exactly what to say and when to say it, and he fixed my fucked up documents. Everything went great. My point is, YES, you DEFINITELY need a lawyer to go to court for pretty much anything.

I like Fat Tire a lot (same company as Trippel). I've had a few good microbrews from Seattle like Red Hook (sold pretty much everywhere) and Pike's Pale Ale, which I've never seen outside of Washington State. And believe it or not, we have a few good beers in Nebraska if you're ever up this way like Cortland Wheat and pretty much anything of the Empyrean line (bottled at a little restaurant/brewery in downtown Lincoln). I find that all of the major American brands are nothing special, though I drink them anyway because they are very cheap compared to imports and microbrews.

Sorry about misunderstanding your post before. I do that sometimes.

As I posted above somewhere or other, Trippel contains about 9% alcohol. I can go right down the street and buy a 6 pack of this stuff (but it's not actually that great), because only some backwards ass states have laws about the alcohol content of beer, and Nebraska ain't one of them. Most states I have visited lately also would appear to have no such laws governing their beers, so I'm a little confused as to why VERY MANY foreigners in this forum seem to think that all of our beer in this country is 3.2 shite.

We have good shit and bad shit just like anyone else - it's just that only the U.S.'s bad shit seems to get exported. Like I said though, I'm not really defending American beer here so much as trying to provide some clearer facts about the subject.
