Well wait, if you're TAing, aren't you in grad school? The other guy is undergrad, as far as I can tell, and thus he is not working anywhere near as hard as you are.

And I was working 40 hours at two separate jobs my 5th year of undergrad (bowling alley 25 hrs, tech support 15 hrs) and still had ridiculous amounts of time to goof off. Probably because my coursework was not all that time consuming, I guess.

I had a blast in college, and I had to support myself with student loans and low paying jobs too, buddy. Matter of fact, my low paying job in college was the best job I ever had - I worked as a pin chaser in our campus bowling alley. I wish I could go back and do it again, because work was fun, but the difference in the amount of money I make with a college degree is too great to even consider it.

Hate to have to tell you this, but if you think life is boring, it's actually because YOU are a boring person. I really can't simplify this for you any more, so perhaps that will finally get through that thick skull of yours. People who are vibrant and exciting never whine and moan and complain the way you do - if you talk to people in real life the way you post on slashdot, it's a wonder anyone is willing to hang around you at all. Lighten up a bit, for crying out loud.

I wasn't even a drinker or partier in college - I just had a great time with great friends, and I never ALLOWED things to be boring. The choice is yours.

Copyright infringement, rather than being a criminal matter, is a matter of causing financial damage to a corporation. They are free to sue whomever they choose to recover their damages. If it were criminal to infringe copyrights, I'm still not sure if you'd be right or not, actually, but it's certainly not the case here.

Speeding tickets are also largely handled in a civil manner, although their classification is very confusing. Similarly though, a cop operating a speed trap is under no obligation to nab every single car that speeds by.

I disagree. A good defense attorney would be able to get the case dismissed if the RIAA failed to go anywhere with it in a reasonable amount of time. $12,000 should have been plenty of money for what in reality is a very, very simple case with little evidence to present and so forth. This isn't Congress - the RIAA can't just indefinitely filibuster.

In the event that the court found in the kid's favor, it is likely he could have countersued, FOR FREE, if some lawyer decided they had a good chance of reaching into the RIAA's deep pockets. The lawyer's fees would come out of the RIAA's settlement.

The way they handled this is completely stupid, in my opinion.

No long cases; no spending all of your worldly money on attorneys - to tell you the truth, the kid in the article would have had a VERY GOOD CHANCE of having such a motion succeed - simply based on the fact that search engines are known to almost everyone, including judges, and though no lawyer myself, I believe there is established legal precedent already protecting them.

So really, the issue here is that you're a big jerk, right? After all, if something is of no interest to YOU, personally, it should be immediately disposed of, as it is "junk". It matters little whether anyone else finds that object desirable; only the opinion of you, master of all he surveys, could possibly be of any importance. You sound like a sociopath.

So, if you bring bottled water to a park, are drinking fountains litter (since you have no use for them)? If you take your trash with you when you leave, are trash cans litter? If you never feel the need to sit down, are park benches litter? What I am getting at is that there are already several unnatural objects in public parks, because they provide a convenience or possibly a fun factor to that park; and yet you do not seem to specifically object to their presence. What then is your beef with geocaches? Just feeling like an asshole, perhaps?

Professional pirates are businessmen. (Also see: professional drug dealers). If they invest money in anything, they want to see some sort of return on it - giving the money to terrorist groups is about as financially effective as setting it in a pile and lighting it on fire. Why would anyone trying to maximise their profits give their money to people who can't make it into more money, when sound investment opportunities are right there for the taking?

Having terrorists blow things up and wreck the economy is also not exactly something that someone who wants to make good investments would probably be very interested in. So, now you have two great reasons not to give your money to these people. So, seriously, NO ONE is doing this, and the entire concept is bullshit.
