I laughed and laughed when I read that (and I like Metallica). Traded like a commodity.....rather than sold as their commodity is what the quote should have said:)
Speaking as one of their fans, I can only point out that, after observing the general population of the people who go to metallica concerts, they are less concerned with computers then you might other wise believe.
I could be wrong, but I was under the understanding that the SFX were not at all expensive and that was one of the selling points. The idea that such great sfx could be done so cheaply.
Obviously you have never worked in a IT Banking shop or for an Airlines IT department. Without mainframes international banking would not exist as it does now.
Strictly speaking they are not different systems (ie hardware) they are different software. The linux runs under VM on a machine that can also run OS/390. In fact you can run mupltiple OS/390 , VM, Linux, and AIX(not sure if this is supported anymore) LPARs on the same machine at the same time.
Just a point, I did notice someone pointed out GE being #5, but I would just like to add that IBM is also in the top 10 (maybe #6) I am sure that Sony outways MS, however IBM blows away sony in size and market domination. Think Midrange and mainframe size computers.

But the century has never been the first two digits of the year. Nevermind the fact that it isn't even always the first two digits of the year plus one.
I also worked in a fortune 500 data center for 2 years. I did happen to monitor the consoles and am still provide training for that area though I have moved on to messing with RS/6000 and various unix boxen. Our production systems (6 lpars across 3 cmos machines) have been down six times (One of them 3 times, the others were individual faults) in those two years. Four of those times were the fault of the operator (once was my fault) and two were unscheduled faults. The development and y2k systems did come down more often, but that is what they were there for. We do have a monthly maintenance period of about 8 hours when they are all scheduled down. All in all they were the most stable machines I ever worked on
Actually most companies are now having you sign away your brain and various other rights during the hiring process. It doesn't violate the Bill of Rights if you sign your rights away. Of course it doesn't help any that all the forms have something along the lines of ("Employment conditional on acceptance of these terms.") OTOH a law that outright prohibits people talking about their salaries would probably fall into your above case.
Actually there is an option on the dream cast to ignore whether there is a dial tone or not. You just go into the settings area on the inet disk and you check "Blind Dialing"
No offense, but this is the second post I have seen that mentions school is for teaching kids to socialize.
This to me does not make sense unless we are trying to teach kids to dislike people who are different and to join small little groups that don't like people in the other small groups.
I think most of my socialization (in school) started towards the end of high school/beginning of college. The rest of the time my socialization was taught outside of school playing with friends who I lost later because we joined different groups in school that didn't like each other.
Now, first off. I like eye-candy as much as the next person. I really like computer generated graphics. Ok, with that said, how important are graphics to the gaming process. I feel that gameplay has a lot more to do with whether I like a game or not. If a game has great graphics and bad gameplay it will not hold my interest and I would be less likely to buy it after a demo. Case in point: Zelda for the gameboy. Zelda has always been a fun game, I think part of it has something to do with the fact that you can see areas/things that you can't go to/interact with until you get farther in the game. Zelda on the gameboy is 2D, but it is still a much better game experience than some new whizbang 3d games out now. So, for me gameplay is more key than graphics, that combined with a relative low price point and the ability to link gameboys together and you will see why the gameboy remains the best selling video game device. Well, in a similar vein, I checked my mail, said what the hell, and loaded slashdot (downloading buncha stuff today) and while it was doing that I went and took a shower
My friend has a CD burner and he has taken all his Books on tape and copyied them to mp3 and burned them to CD so he can take them to work and play them at work. You don't have to use a really high bitrate either. I expect you could do the same with the rio.
Duh, I am not "pleased" that he died, I just have a sense of humor. The man who died also had a sense of humor, I am sure he would appreciate it. Unfortunately they do not yet sell open source senses of humor that you can just pick up at the store.
I believe that with AIX 4.3.3 an s80 can detect a bad processor and vary it offline without even rebooting.

Did you mean Fall? OS/390 can handle the spring time change on the fly. IMS might not like it, but that is an application problem not the OS.
