TUCKER: And there is not a single study documenting the fact that we need all of these guest worker visa programs. But what we do have is eight straight months of rising unemployment and we have, Lou, a Congress ready to add more visas into this mix. Zoe Lofgren yesterday introduced a bill into the House to do what they call recapture 550,000 visas at a time when the unemployment rate in this country is 6.1 percent. They want to add another half million foreign workers into this economy.
I think you guys are missing the whole point...

Perhaps it would be best illustrated by this 20 year old joke:
The Americans and the Japanese decided to engage in a competitive boat race.
The Americans and the Japanese decided to engage in a competitive boat race. Both teams practiced hard and long to reach their peak performance. On the big day the Japanese won by a mile.
The American team was discouraged by the loss. Morale sagged. Corporate management decided that the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found, so a consulting firm was hired to investigate the problem and recommend corrective action.
The consultant's finding: The Japanese team had eight people rowing and one person steering; the American team had one person rowing and eight people steering. After a year of study and millions spent analyzing the problem, the American team's management structure was completely reorganized. The new structure: four steering managers, three area steering managers, and a new performance review system for the person rowing the boat to provide work incentive.
The next year, the Japanese won by two miles!
Humiliated, the American corporation laid off the rower for poor performance and gave the managers a bonus for discovering the problem.
How could they not mention Belo Corp (owner of the Dallas Morning News)$40 million dollar investment in the Cue Cat? The ultimate link between newspapers and web pages via bar codes in an adorable PS2 device.
Those types of jobs ( especially if they include only a PO Box) are written in order to show that no US Citizens are interested/qualified for the job. The are called Labor Market Tests. The job can then be given to an employee that requires company based sponsorship (eg H1-B Visa).
You should probably spend your time learning Hindi. That way when your company outsources your job to India, you will be able to train your replacements in their native tongue much faster than your co-workers and be able to enjoy your unemployment benefits sooner.
Sounds like your web app was badly designed ( or maybe not at all ). You should have not spent any time coding superfluous functions and procedures in the first place.
Actually, its 65k + 20K (masters & phd graduates)= 85k x's 10 years = 850k.
You might think be of the opinion...hmmm...thats too many.
But wait! 2001, 2002, and 2003 the cap was 195k! Thats an additional 330k!
A total of 1.180 million.
Of course, we will ignore all of the L1 visas ( since the government doesn't keep those stats) and the spouses of those 1.180 million H1-B's), and just for the heck of its, lets ignore the 20-40k students who graduate this month that can now work for 39 months before having to get another visa.
If there are 10 million IT jobs, then that is 1 out 10 IT workers.
Not a drop in the bucket.
The flaw in your thinking is very common -- it assumes a static world that does not adjust. If people are dying by the millions, then things will adjust.
War will be the adjustment. Competition for scarce resources will lead to disagreements between nations and war.
I haven't done any benchmarks of the speed of the drive itself, though I suspect it adds some latency. But the actual CPU usage is insignificant, compared to just about anything else you might do on the machine.
Why bother with actual data, it always just gets in the way of what you want to say.
If Ford did not outsource, for example, it would have to make everything from the drills for the oil, the refineries for the gasoline, the machines to make the steel and the chips and the plastic, really, recreate the entire economy and in doing so lose the efficiencies that come with shared costs.
That would make Ford a vertical monopoly. That is not allowed in the US. To take your example to its furthest conclusion - Ford would require only Ford brand tires on each Ford car wheel, Ford brand motor oil in the crank case, etc. They would love to be able to accomplish this.
Why did he ask Andreeson? If Mr. Andreeson had a clue what the next big thing was he would have invented it already. His foray into the internet with Netscape was over 10 years ago. In internet years thats almost 3 generations. Its like asking your Grandpa about what going to be hot in women's fashion next year.
From an IT perspective, since all of the candidates some how think that there is a massive shortage of IT workers in the US and we should increase the number of H1-Bs to solve this problem, it really doesn't matter who is elected.
Luckily, Congress is set to help make sure that there is *plenty* of oversupply so that businesses do not run out of employees.
As Lou Dobbs reported last week, Congress is set to add 550,000 new H1-B visas for next year.

Bullwinkle had better watchout!
You realize that out of the 50,000 people in both towers, only 2,823 died, with 105 classified as still missing?
That is a 94.2% survival rate in 1 hour 48 minutes.

1999 just called and said it wants your 10 year old operating system back.
Open Source didn't really help him land a job for what 9 years?
I mean top to bottom activities in a single company such as accounting, HR, project management, security services, legal, design, PR, etc.)
My company already outsources 2 of those to Asia and South America.
Can you site the law that makes him a criminal?
I have refused to do stuff my boss told me to do. I thought getting fired was the only thing he could do.
What things can I refuse to do that he can send jail for?

If AutoCad 14 us completely worthless, why are they initiating an expensive lawsuit to prevent its resale??

Ms has the habit of getting into troube.
My wife does the same thing.

Really not significantly.

So if I write a word processing program and on the package I say "requires Windows Vista" - I have to get Microsoft's Permission first??
What if I say "requires Ubuntu 10.9" - whose permission do I need to get now?
This is a dangerous precedent!

Its almost like we are all under suspicion of being criminals.
Well, at least Manhattan hasn't been been turned into a maximum security prison...yet.
