    If all you want is the ability to play mpeg video on your tv, you've picked the wrong tool. my $55 Apex DVD player from walmart plays mp3s, vcds, svcds, dvds, audiocds, and yes, raw mpeg files burned to a cdr.

    sorry, but no. The GeForce 4 is only about 7-8 months old at the most. I bought mine in April of last year almost immediately after it was release. (Fell into some free money)

    Did you try the Gentoo 1.4rc1 live cd? It booted, loaded the nvidia driver, and started the ut2003 demo for me with zero trouble.

    hell yeah, when Duke nukem forever was announced (aka shortly after duke nukem 3d came out) 3D realms had yet to produce a game that ran in windows instead of DOS

    For a /. readers OS, I'd recommend PrBoom . For windows, you'd have to go with WinDoom . Of course you have to have the wad files, but I'm sure if your asking how to run it you've allready got those right.........

    aahhhh!! It's that damn book! I've had nightmares about that book! They used it here to teach MIPS asm, and then the next semester it's used to teach "bum bum bum!" cpu organisation (sp) and design.

    really? my girlfriend would sooner stab me in the leg with a fork, then let me STOP her from seeing this movie tonight. Personaly, I don't see what the big fuss is about since I never read the book(s) or saw the first movie, but I'm more of Tom Clancy fan myself.

    well, since FreeBSD isn't a publicly traded company I can't really speak for their profits, or lack thereof, but this shows that the second rc of FreeBSD 5.0 is due out today....

    this question is asked (and answered) in just about every nvidia related article that comes up on /., so I'll summarize. There are bits and pieces of their drivers which they do not own the rights to (ex. S3TC compression). Also, most of the bang for their video cards comes from the drivers, and they don't want to just give that away. Did you ever notice every time someone shows a benchmark with an ATI card faster than a nvidia card, nvidia releases new drivers with "25%" permformance increases!?!? The whole damn card must be software, since this new driver was larger than the rest of my kernel!

    Ahh, but it is useful for things such as the various distributions LiveCD's, which contain lots of documentation and plain text files along with the increasing number of binaries. for example, the slackware 8.1 live cd squeezes 1.3GB+ of data onto a 650MB cd using zisofs.

    both glibc 2.3.1 and gcc 3.2.1 are in slackware-current, and have been for a while (few days at least). Everyone talks about the slow releases of slackware, but damn if -current isn't bleeding edge & stable at the same time.
