So what format would you suggest they use? Mini-CDs and mini-DVDs are physically much larger than a UMD cartridge is, plus it holds a lot of data. What is this magic open format you seem to know about? Flash memory just isn't price competitive with a cheap-to-make optical disc, unfortunately.
I agree that it should be open, and I _really_ think they should allow running apps off the MemoryStick, but that's not the same thing as saying UMD is a bad bit of technology. If they can up the speed and lower the power requirements, it'll be a nice bit of tech.
UMD is _not_ same as mini-CD or mini-DVD!

No, they're not physically the same - a UMD is physically much smaller than a mini-CD or mini-DVD. If the PSP had used one of those, it would be much larger than it is, and some people are even complaining about how large it is now! It also holds a lot more data than a mini-CD (or even a CD).
but the speaker is not all that good. The sound output is much inferior to Nintendo DS and GBA SP, which is a bit odd.
If you're out in public, you should be using headphones, anyway, not subjecting people to your noise, so the sound issue is probably negated that way. And if you're at home, you should probably be watching your video on your normal video equipment with decent audio. Sure, there are likely to be exceptions, but I'd expect that is the normal scenario, so I wouldn't get too worked up about it.
Okay, so the dual tiny screens on the DS don't add up to as much screen real estate or resolution as the one big widescreen on the PSP, right? So I'm not impressed there. The cool DS feature that the PSP should've had, and which would've made much more sense on the PSP, is the touchscreen bit. That would've been pretty awesome, if they could've made it so it doesn't get all scratched-up and gross in the process.
Are you sure it doesn't effect his writing? It's been too long for me to remember much about his Ender books (the first 2 I read, anyway), but are there any positive examples (or any examples at all) of homosexual or bisexual people in them? I'd be surprised that someone that whacky would be able to keep that kind of thing out of their writing.
In general, I've found it's best to not know too much about one's favourite authors.
Ah, little ones - go see Robots, the IMAX version if you can. _Way_ underrated movie. I'd recommend seeing it even without the little ones; it's a lot of fun. That one may be great on DVD; I'm anxious to see any extras it may have, plus so much stuff goes by so fast that I want to do some frame-by-frame viewing in many spots to see what little bits were too fast for the eye to see.
For non-kiddie fare, I highly recommend Sin City, while it's still available on the big screen.
re: SW:Ep3
It's a visual feast, no matter how good or bad the story or acting wind up being. That is the kind of movie you _really_ want to see on the big screen. I think you'd kick yourself later on if you see the DVD and really liked it, for not having seen it on the big screen when it was out. Just bite the bullet, man. If you wind up regretting it, at least you'll probably have company. Guaranteed, no matter how great it may wind up being, lots of Slashbots will wind up hating it. I can't hate Ep 1 _too_ much, as it had that amazing lightsabre battle with Darth Maul at the end. That alone was worth the price of admission for me.
Well, I was already debating skipping out on this film, and now I have absolutely no reason to see it.
Yeah, but you'll see it anyway, won't you?:)
I'm all in just for the visuals. Even if it's nothing but pretty pictures, I'll be fine. If I get better than that, hey, bonus! Go in with low expectations, and all should be well in the end.
When you get your content, or your applications, online, you are then at the mercy of:
1) He who controls where the content or apps are stored, controls YOU. 2) Your connetion (being up or down, or slow, or high latency) 3) Security issues
But, if you like all that, feel free to check out the Phantom gaming system; you'd probably like it.:)
Twice the price? I think not. More like, MS waits for Adobe's stock price to fall because of such an unnecessary move, then snap them both up for the price of one. I believe I read that Adobe's stock price dropped after the announcement, but I've not confirmed that yet.
Be careful tossing those kind of ideas around...once someone invents Instant Evil(tm), MS will warp space and time moving so fast to snap them up. Watch out for warp ripples in space/time.

It's called a "book", and it's rather cheaper than a PSP.
Saying the words 'cheaper' and 'book' in the same sentence is pretty funny. Have you priced books lately? Even paperbacks are like $7! Crazy.
And they're also much smaller physically. A mini-CDR or mini-DVD would've made the physical size of the PSP much larger.
That's not always possible when Slashdot has linked to something, as in this case. Still looking for a mirror to RTFA. :(
God knows your /. ID is low enough that it might be true.

How's that for an "imperfect solution"?
Or is it merely inconventient?
I think the word you're looking for is 'naive.'
Yeah, it's kind of like patent _pending_. Let me know when you actually _have_ the patent.
There IS no 'dark side' of the moon. Seriously - I saw that on a .sig quote, so it must be true. :)

Doesn't this imply that "it" doesn't yet work? That's the same thing as saying it's broken, right?
"It just works as designed." (you poor bastard)
"It mostly kinda sorta works."
or
"Eventually, when Longhorn ships, it may actually work."
So yeah, don't buy anything else until then, cuz that wouldn't make sense!
