  1. the real question is: on AMD Beats Intel in CPU Sales · · Score: 4, Insightful

When will people stop asking about when Dell will start using AMD CPUs?

If you want a machine with an AMD CPU, go to someone else. Dell is hardly the end-all-be-all of desktop computers. Yes, they're huge. No, that doesn't mean they're the best, are the least-expensive or have the best service. They're merely the most-popular.

But trust me on the peaches.

The problem here is that once you collect all these joysticks, then you've got a big collection of joysticks to hook & unhook, depending on which games you want to play. They should figure out a way around that, like have one joystick, with, I dunno, a cartridge system or something.

Maybe this explains why it's so expensive to do business here, and jobs have to be shifted overseas. Then we can get our stapler support from India!

    Symmetry. I like it.

  6. Re:How come toasters are so cheap? on A DIMM Future for RAM Bundles · · Score: 1

Perhaps that's why there are razor thin margins in the memory space - there are few producers of memory chips, and some of those producers dump memory in certain markets, which increases the pricing competition. Punishment for dumping on other markets, when it happens, only happens after the fact, so it doesn't really change pricing.

  7. Re:How come toasters are so cheap? on A DIMM Future for RAM Bundles · · Score: 3, Insightful

What you don't realize is that there are very few actual makers of memory chips (modules are different). There have also been numerous proven cases of dumping over the years. It happens. The margins on RAM _are_ razorthin, though. Only harddrives have similar margins these days. I'm still seeing GeForce 4mx (MX!) cards going for over $100, while others sell for under $50. Some computer cases go for under $50 (WITH PSU), while others go over over $200 (withOUT PSU). That's the way the industry has evolved.

Probably because toasters & automobiles don't have razor-thin margins like memory does. And let's not forget - the memory manufacturers get away with it because they CAN.

To Fark or Slashdot? The answer is 'yes' for both.

For Fark ('TotalFark'), you get access to all the submissions, not just the ones they decide to accept. What this means is you get access to a lotta boobies links before they get, well, farked.

Same deal with Slashdot - stories are accessible before the general populace can see them, so you have a chance to check out a site before it gets pounded into oblivion. Plus you can choose not to see ads. And, even cooler for those like me, you can access ALL of your previous posts (I've got over 1600 posts going back years). One of these weekends when I'm feeling really bored, I intend to go back through them all and save the ones I wish I had saved in the first place. I crack myself up, you see. :)
