I'm not sure you can assume that just because someone is buying a video card that it will necessarily be the most expensive thing possible.

Good thing that's not remotely what I said. We're talking about 'mid-range' here, after all. A $250 card is not a $499 card, and certainly isn't a $599 card. It's much closer to the $150 everyone here seems to WANT to be the mid-range, simply because they're cheap, I guess. But wishing doesn't make it so. I've used $150 cards for the last several generations myself, but I'm not trying to fool myself into believing that I'm getting a mid-range card for that price.

  5. Re:Mid-range? on Nvidia Unveils New Mid-Range GeForce Graphics Card · · Score: 2

Mid-Range typically refers to what the majority are willing to spend on something, not what prices are offered. The buyers, not the sellers, determine mid-range and the buyers aren't scrambling to grab $250 cards.

People don't generally buy video cards. They buy computers with (or without) video cards. For people who actually buy video cards, $250 is mid-range.

Given a Quadro 6000 from nvidia will set you back between $3000 and $4000, the a mid-range card must be $1500-$2000, right?

That's not a consumer graphics card, though. :)

  7. Re:Mid-range? on Nvidia Unveils New Mid-Range GeForce Graphics Card · · Score: 1

    Depends how you define mid-range

I define it by the prices involved, since that's what people are talking about in the first place - the price of the card. You'll always find fewer users at the high end of any price range.

Somebody dropping two hundred and fifty big ones on a video card is mid-range?

I see this reaction a lot in people who don't know the market. Ignorance of what the low and high ends of the 'range' wind up surprising people. If you're ignorant of the numbers 1 through 10, someone randomly reciting the number 5 might seem high to you. In video cards, there are $350+ cards, and even $500+ cards, in the consumer space. And that's just PER CARD, and doesn't take into account multi-card setups.

So yeah, $250 is a MID-range card. That's not to say it does (or doesn't) meet your specific needs, but expressing shock at something you're obviously ignorant of really doesn't make you sound like a smart consumer.

Qualcomm recently demoed an upcoming SoC based on a dual-core Cortex-A9 that was putting out 1080p 3D video. I think they're planning on 1.2GHz cores, which can vary the clockrate, voltage, or just turn off a core entirely, as needed. Combine that with a smaller process, and that is likely to be VERY power efficient. EVO 2, please *grasping hands*. 2H2011 is going to be a very fun time for smartphone and tablet enthusiasts. There's a lot of public information out there, and a lot of it is wrong or misleading. Couldn't you have a case for libel if say for instance this company crafts a profile for an unknowing individual which suggests he's gay when he isn't?

Absolutely, but that's a pretty big assumption to make about what this company is going to do before they've done anything. We don't even know if they'll be marking unclaimed profiles as 'available' or 'looking' or anything like that.

Honestly, I think it's a tad shady that a company is crafting dating profiles for people who don't want them using random information from the internet of all places as a source.

I don't think they mentioned they'd be using 'random' sources, but yeah, the whole thing is definitely shady. I just don't know which particular U.S. laws, if any, are directly applicable to this, since they claim to be using public records. We'll see. We could definitely use some real laws on the books that actually talk about privacy. Aggregating public records into an individually, publicly-identifiable record, is something that has not yet been addressed in the U.S., at least not on the federal level. It's inevitable, I think, but who knows when. The GOP will certainly stop any attempt to do anything (about anything, not just this) for the next two years, so I wouldn't expect any action until 2013 at the soonest, if then.

Unless Aussies are now using 'US' to mean something Australian, which would be annoying. They should just call whatever it is they're talking about 'Bruce' to save confusion. :)

If the information is truly only from public records, then the information is - you guessed it - already public. At least in general. I think a case could be made that conflating the disparate data sources into one personally identifiable profile could cross a line, but the problem with the law and privacy is - there's generally not much of a well-defined line for privacy. A good test case, though, if someone has the financial means to pursue it to a non-settlement conclusion.

I can wait for a nice dual-core replacement for my EVO, especially since I get no discount until June, anyway. We'll see who has the best fast data network with the best plan pricing and best phone by then. I've no problems switching to Verizon or T-Mobile if they step up their game in their respective weakspots.
