Explain how adding a 'replace' parameter to the header() function from one version to another and making it default TRUE (when it used to be implicitly FALSE) is *not* going to break scripts that depend on consistent behaviour?
Well, hopefully they learned since then, but for me each PHP upgrade remains a little scary...
It's also not really pleasant to have your scripts dependent on the correct settings of php.ini.
Well, I get your point. OTOH, I just took out an extended warranty on an expensive smartphone. I had both previous models and they always broke after the warranty expired. Technical faults or just dropping the thing (both covered) once too often. Being without your PDA is not fun since you really start to depend on these things. So I got extended warranty for this one.
I figure these things are much more fragile than the regular phones that the insurer bases his rates on.
I also got extended warranty for my car which cost me $400 and cost *them* ~ $1400 on repairs.
Well, you sure seemed to be making the point that choosing the lesser of two evils is *always* wrong. You state that much more clearly than the (now great-) grandfatherpost states that it was a good idea to support Iraq against Iran.
Especially your Under no circumstance is "minimizing casualty" moral when you're still killing people. sentence sounds like you principally reject killing people.
I'm glad to hear that you didn't intend it that way. As far as the Iran - Iraq thing, I believe that practically everybody (even our great grandfather) agrees that that was a dumb move in retrospect.
The west should indeed make a point of being seen to support the side of justice and fair play, if it isn't too much against our own interest, that is. Let's be realistic first and idealistic if we can afford it.
I do know my parents were happy to be liberated by the Britains, Americans & Canadians even though that meant choosing the lesser of two evils many times, like:
- Mass murdering German city populations to bring the Nazi's to their knees.
- Minimizing casualties (and failing) when the British bombed a Rotterdam harbor and missed it by a few hundred meters, mostly destroying my mother's street.
Still my parents were glad people had the courage and the sense to choose between two evils at that time.
Fortunately people with a different character than you. What would you have done? Write mr. Hitler an angry letter?
I second that. I run my own colo server for a semi-sized web site. A few years ago I switched from doing my own IMAP mail to Fastmail enhanced (2GB) accounts for all 4 staff members. Very convenient and much cheaper than doing it yourself.
In these days of spam and viruses running a mailserver is not as easy as it once was.
Funny thing is 'Aeroplane' is exactly the kind of thing a non-native English speaker like myself could say. We may be able to pass for natives (if you can't hear our accents) but sometimes we betray ourselves by using slightly archaic words.
I remember saying 'thrice' to an American once. He thought I was quoting Shakespeare!
When are everyone going to learn that CENTRAL-Europe is NOT ONE COUNTRY. (sic)
We Dutch use the QWERTY layout, in fact most people I know buy their keyboards in the US layout.
I don't bother typing accented characters most of the time.
When I'm in France I sometimes type on AZERTY keyboards which is very hard to do even though they only changed a few keys around. That's the french for you. They're always to proud of being different...
Actually, I think using web based mail while travelling is a lot smarter then ssh'ing in and using mutt. Do you suppose Windoze users are smarter then?
Thanks, that's exactly what I was thinking myself. Who the fuck moderated this down? At least it's a new viewpoint compared to the usual talk about style and user-friendliness.
Don't mod things down if you don't agree, discuss them...
The advantage of the P2P thing (from Creative's POV) is that some of their main competitors (Sony, Apple) won't be able to follow their move because they're in the media business themselves.
(yeah I know, some of you'll probably think I'm the AC too.)
Of course it has to have a virus scanner. Even if there's no known virus that affects it. It needs a virus scanner so they have one more bullet on the box. And everybody is afraid of viruses...
I don't know about your PC usage, but I regularly trust companies and individuals by installing their software on my PC's/servers. Like it or not, in practice, you have to trust some people.
Google doesn't seem like such a bad guy to me. Being paranoid can be good, but it's more important to have a realistic view of risks and the parties involved.
Google's desktop search does *not* send your information all over the internet. It only seems that way to the clueless. Yes, I guess they're guilty of overestimating their customers.
I've been walking around with that idea for a while. Great for those wifi, BT and mouse dongles. And all the industry needs to do is think of a standard form factor.
That bandwidth problem will be solved with USB 3.0 and 4.0...
What most people (in my opinion) fail to realise, is that we have tiny brains. We have a limited number of grey cells in that tiny skull up there, and we are therefore limited in what we can comprehend. Sure we have come to understand the world around us in a incredible detailed way; but we have no guarantees at all that we will be able to continue this trend.
Scientists believe that Cro Magnon man, who lived 40.000 years ago and used crude stone tools had the same thinking power as modern man. That in such a short period we evolved to Homo Slashdottus shows IMHO the amazing strength of the human power to learn and stand upon the shoulders of those that came before us.
The unlikely truth of the matter was that the man sitting on his right was passing an open pocket knife to the man on his left and a foul ball struck the hand with the knife, driving the point into his throat. That's something about which - even if you were there - you'd be saying, "What the hell?! Can't be."
That one would've been caught by Hanlon's razor: Do not attribute to malice anything that is sufficiently explained by stupidity.
(never pass an open knife in front of someone's throat, also, never use two razors at the same time)
Diligently?

Bang my Head? I'll do you one better!
I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries! Now, go away, or I shall taunt you a second time!
Since no-one else seems to be doing it and I can't find the mod-box I'll just mark you:

As more and more devices can be charged by USB maybe the power-over-USB standard (5v IIRC) will turn into a standard for low power connectors.

Voip phones and wireless access points can be powered by POE (power over ethernet).
There are already USB car & AC chargers available:

I'm not an ogg-head but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of 32 Kbit ogg streams a while ago.

I don't think twice paying $35/yr for my current service, but don't you think your friends' real problem is a slightly different one?
;)
I've never even heard of them and even my 78 year old mother knows Hotmail. Maybe they should invest a few million in an add campaign?
(wait, I get it, you're it
You seem like a typical Hotmail l00zer indeed ;)
1. Microsoft bought Hotmail from Sabeer Bhatia for $400 million in 1997, so in 95/96 it wasn't even 0wned by MS.
2. If you had been really smart you would have gotten your own domain. That way you really have an e-mail adress that will never go away.
3. Hotmail, Yahoo & Gmail are all fairly primitive services compared to my $35/yr enhanced http://fastmail.fm/ account. You get what you pay for...

If Creative really want market dominance they have to give the people what they really want (but may not know yet). Easy mobile song sharing.
Equip the players with Bluetooth and or Infrared so that I can easily copy songs from my mate if I want to.
Make it possible for users to P2P & browse from one device to another while on a train without even knowing each other. Great way to socialize too!
"Hey is that you with the new Britney Spears album? Is it any good? Mind if I copy it? Wanna have a drink together?"
Yes, this will make the media providers very unhappy, but the buyers will love it.
That's the route to market share!
The funny thing about Mac IE is that it's even less compatible with Windows IE than Firefox ;-)
I take it you're not in marketing.

Wow, and that from a website that promotes homeopathy and other quackery *and* makes money from it.
Don't make me laugh...

I can't prove it, but I'm optimistic!
