There are basically two types of people who work for minimum wage.
The first are entry level people. High school and college kids, who need some cash. Most eventually move on to better paying job. Illegal aliens mostly belong to this group. If they manage to get a green card and work hard aquiring skills, they do move up.
The other type are people who just don't give a shit. You know, the thirty-something who slings fries because they don't have the drive to do any better.
Other than immigrants, legal or otherwise, hardly anybody making minimum wage is "working hard"...
Here is the whitesheet on the LCD, should be very easy to integrate with other projects.
Where?
It's the missing link!
I want the LCD too. Dirt cheap HMD, anyone? A tiny color screen for my Tricorder. Micro pr0n! A cool watch. The possibilities may not be endless, but there are a lot of them.
Besides... I think that we're going to see a changing of the guard with the next generation of consoles; And it will be Nintendo on top.
Handheld or home based? Nintendo is the current king of handhelds in numbers. If the DS will play GBA and GBC games, plus good new stuff, they may remain #1.
Or maybe not. It looks like all handheld devices are converging. The N-Gage may be a POS, but the idea is right. Combine a phone, with a nice touch screen, PDA functions, tiny hard drive, good game controls, good audio and video chips and a 3+ megapixel camera with optical zoom and flash (all of which is in the pipeline) and handheld gaming consoles pretty much go away.
With that kind of convergence, Nintendo better keep the price of the DS under $100 or kids won't even touch it.
If I buy an iPod, it's mine. If I want to tear it open and take out the drive, I will. If I want to hack the software, I will. If I want to play Real music on it (though why, I don't know), I will.
It is mine. If Steve-o doesn't like it, tough shit.
Fuck apple. Fuck any damn company that wants to use the DMCA to stop competition. Fuck any damn comapny that wants to tell me what I can do with *MY* hardware!
Back in High School, I took an electronics class. We fixed TVs for practice.
This one idiot in the class was always doing dumb shit. Once, he shorted a resistor with a lead. An electrolytic cap blew, embedding bits of aluminum in the ceiling. And his face. Luckily, we had to wear safety glasses.
Another time, he shorted a HV PS in a TV. The lead instantly vaporized and the whole room filled with black smoke. We got to go outside for hours while the fire department checked the whole building.
When via finally produces the nano-itx boards, and the new, even tinier boards they are hinting at, it should be possible to roll your own "handtop".
Tiny drives, more compact batteries and color touch screens are more available all the time. Cabling is an issue, though.
Ah, but you miss the point. So called "human nature" is about survival. Survival = GREED.

It has to be asked:
WHAT, NO Pr0n?!?!?!?!
Seriously, there are times this could be useful. Though, I would prefer streaming from my PVR...
Worst Buy sux, but sometimes you can stick it to `em.
I got a $50 ATI tuner card, with 2 rebates, an in store discount, and a 10% off coupon, for $9. I received both rebates.
A friggin' miracle...
I bet you *NEVER* see that 10 bucks. He just told you that to get you off the phone.

SCO Akbar?
If VIA ever gets off their ass and releases the nano-itx motherboards, what you want could be built fairly cheaply.
The nano-itx is only 120mm on a side. I have plans for several of them (computer "brick", boom-box, portable DVD player, etc.).
This looks very close to what I'm looking for.
I want a remote control with a little trackball and sms-style thumb keyboard.
I've seen one with the trackball and a lot of buttons, but not a thumb-typing layout.
It seems with all the living room computers in use now, a remote like this would sell well. I'd buy one.
I for one think this is a superb idea. And it's not "100 pounds", it's 97, dammit!
Bring on the Green Chicks!
(Did you see the tongue on that Orian Slave Girl?)
Why? It's just a honest business.
The acre and a half of popups on my screen can attest to that.
What exactly is a Cyberlawyer anyway?
They use "IANAL" instead of "Esq.".
867-5309?
Damn, now the frickin' song is stuck in my head!

"More Corn!"
Shouldn't that be:
Behold, Gentlemen!
This could be interesting, the way train wrecks are interesting.
M$ and the big N together could give Sony fits.
MarioX, anyone?

In both cases, the TVs worked afterward.
I Want It Naked
Heh. Don't we all!
There are Linux drivers for the various Linux PDAs about.
So drivers should be available soon.
I wondered how much, too.
Dynamism has them at $1899.00 for the U50 and $2649.00 for the U70. Which is about what I thought when I read the article.
Maybe, if Sony ever sells them direct in the US, the price may drop about $500.
Damn nice toys.
Oooh, thank you.
Now I need to go home and heat up my soldering iron.
What about children, I know mine can be quite distracting.
That's why cars have trunks.
