    Absolutely not true. First off, losing data was a red flag even then. And computer viruses have been around since before the PC. And you don't need the internet for them to propagate - they can do so over the lan, or even via removable media (which with PCs meant a floppy disk). Antivirus programs have been around since the '80s.

    If it couldn't be patched, they'd lose sales and face lots of returns. Can you imagine having to send a dvd to each user every patch tuesday?

    And the older you are, the less likely to put up with that sh*t. Ergo, there's a strong disincentive to hire older workers who will tell you you don't know jack when you're wrong and then prove it.

    I do, however, worry about the data entry skills of the latest generation. You'd think being raised with tech would make them understand the importance of consistency and accuracy, but if my anecdotal experience is accurate they are even less thorough than the older people who had the excuse of not being familiar with the technology."

    That's why businesses are hiring people with autism. Having the ability to focus on something for an extended period of time is hard for people who expect everything to just work and have the attention span of a tweet.

    Considering the extent of ageism in IT (why keep an old-timer who will only work their 40 hours per week and won't put up with sh*t when we can hire 2 kids at half the price and burn them out) it's more likely that the pile of defective garbage is designed and implemented by the young'uns.

    25 years ago software wasn't shipped with continuous patching over the Internet in mind. It had to mostly work as promised because the cost of sending out patch disks was a lot higher. Today, the attitude is "ship it, we'll patch it later." That attitude doesn't come from old coders and product managers who took pride in their work and were in it for the long haul, rather than the quick cash-out.

    Try looking a prescription drug costs for those over 50. And time off for doctor's visits and tests. It's an unfortunate fact of life that as we age, we become higher maintenance.

    You've never sat in a meeting when the powers-that-be announce the great new idea they've been brainstorming on and asked them if they ever googled for it as part of their research, they would have seen why it's not new and it's failed to develop a customer base multiple times because it is a really, really dumb idea.

    Or a meeting where people insisted a certain software package couldn't do the job fast enough because "they were told this in school" and not because they actually tested it in the real world - and still don't believe it when you prove it with data sets far larger than they will ever use - "you're using some sort of trick!"

    The difference between Aero and accessibility is that Aero added nothing in terms of functionality. It was useless, distracting eye-candy.

    Tell that to Henry Ford. The KISS system has a lot going for it, and that includes removing useless eye candy bloat that makes the screen appear more cluttered.

    Win 8.1 is very decent. You never have to see the tiles UI from the moment you log in to the moment you shut down. It is also far and away better when it comes to assistive technology compared to even specialized distros such as Knoppix Adriane. And getting rid of Aero (which was a waste of cpu and made it harder for those with low vision to use Vista/Win7, as well as adding to the feel of desktop clutter) is great.

    That's what USB storage is for. Use the best UI for each form factor, but with common data files.

    We have natural caves on earth big enough to hold the great pyramid, so with the lighter gravity of mars, it would be expected to find even bigger caves. And then there are cave systems with hundreds of kilometers of passages.

    So you want to put the people underground where they'll be safe, and their source of food and fresh air (the greenhouses) where they're going to be, as you yourself say, vulnerable.

    The greenhouses need to be underground as well. So does the power generation, which means a fusion plant. Good thing they're only 20 years away, just like they were 20 years ago.

    Hell, you wouldn't ask a psychiatrist to give you an appendectomy, would you?

    The only thing I'd ask a psychiatrist is "please leave."

    It depends on the circumstances. If I were stuck in this situation I'd trust anyone with some medical training as being better than do-it-yourself.
