  1. he's just jealous on McVoy Strikes Back · · Score: 2, Insightful

Larry McVoy is upset because the leader of the largest open source software development project in the world stopped using his crappy software. Feeling less than useless, he's got an axe to grind. As a result, his comments should be taken with a grain of salt. Lets face it, the guy has lost touch with reality. Publishing his mindless dribble is flamebait. We could all rewrite his crappy software in less time it takes to figure out how to use it.

There needs to be a web based public voting system for each patent put out there, where members of the public can voice their opinion in a very public way about particular patents. Right now there is no such venue for anyone to voice concern, prior art, etc... I think if patents became voted down by large members of the public, it would pretty much force the USPTO to rethink and even revoke the majority of software patents granted today. Otherwise, the USPTO is nothing but a money making scam by government and its merit should be taken with a grain of salt until the day when a frivilous patent holder files suit against me in court, at which time the patent will be struck down.

We should care more about making technology to fight storms, reduce their impact on civilization.

I agree with that analogy, but its misguided for the BSA to represent that analogy.

This whole project seems to be aimed at a noble goal, cross-platform compatibility, but with weak implemention. It is still interpreted. It still requires you to clunk around this huge interpreter and all associated libraries. Its still slow. They need to concentrate on targeting native machine code compilation and execution. I like the fact that java (because of GCJ) can finally be natively compiled, which will definately increase its adoption among serious developers.

I just aborted the installation because I didnt have time to craft a passwd and group file by hand or copy one off some other machine and have it possibly be rejected by the installation script. I also noticed that specifying an empty file or one that did not exist the installation would complain and not go any further.

I dont know about anyone else, but I'll stick with Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com) for now or until they get their act together and write a cleaner install script.

  23. the reason freebsd sucks on FreeBSD 5.2 Released · · Score: -1, Flamebait

The various problems with FreeBSD can be summarized by attempting to retrieve the release notes. The release notes are stored on an FTP server (instead of a web server), and when you retreive them, you get the "too many connections" error message from the FTP server which prevents you from retrieving the file. This is pathetic. These types of design decisions are the reason no one uses freebsd and no one takes freebsd seriously.

  25. no predefined routers makes MUTE useless on MUTE: Simple, Private File Sharing · · Score: 2, Insightful

Although the tool has a good design, the fact that there are no pre-defined routers makes the tool almost useless to most potential file swappers. It would be nice if there was a couple IP addresses pre-configured, or at least some mention of where to look for a start up group, i.e. an irc channel. The author basically expects many people to come together and share their own files with each other. Although this might have good intentions, the other sharing networks which all contain pre-configured routers and are ready to go "out of the box" are going to be used, not this tool.
