  1. 2TB warez depot with usbfs pluggable DL/UL support on Open Source CD Lending For Public Libraries? · · Score: 0, Troll

I'd rather bring an old locked down linux box with eight 250GB internal drives, and allow library patrons to hot plug their USB hard disks into it and share thier warez back and forth. Put a big sign next to the box that says "insert USB hard disk cable here --->" and allow everyone to sync their data with the warez mothership of ISO images.

  3. Qwest an RBOC? Since when? on Qwest & Cablevision Launch VoIP Service · · Score: 1

  4. vmware on Experiences w/ Drive Imaging Software? · · Score: 2, Interesting

  5. so really.... what is this thing useful for. on Cougaar 10.4.6 Released With Source · · Score: 1

Ok, I've went to the site, I've glanced over the FAQ, I've even been to the "Project Site", and still it is not clear to me what use a piece of software like this is useful for.

It sounds to me like this project, like many others before it, is headed down a spiral of software uselessness really fast. They've already lost my vote. It seems pretty useless to me.

  6. Re:Computer-aided transcription on Transcriber Threatens Release of Medical Records · · Score: 2, Interesting

The problem with voice recognition is that almost 70% of the physicians who are dictating are foreign with thick accents. On standard english voices without accents, voice recognition has a 40% success rate without training. With training, it can get as high as 90%. Add a thick foreign accent, and these rates drop bigtime.

  7. spyware term fits Gator nicely on Gator Forces Site To Remove 'Spyware' Label · · Score: 1

I think the term "Spyware" and its associated definition fit Gator corporation just nicely. I would counter sue them for false advertising, deceptive advertising, and 15 other crimes which they are guilty of but I forgot to mention in this post.

  8. difficult recovery scenario on Data Recovery - Put to the Test · · Score: 2, Insightful

  9. anyone who still uses sendmail is fucking stupid on Buffer Overflow in Sendmail · · Score: 0, Flamebait

That guy Eric Allman purposely puts bugs in his code so he can write exploits and crack into machines. He's been doing it since the late 80's. We cracked his box years ago and found an unpublished exploit THAT HE WROTE for the current version of sendmail sitting in his home directory. Coincidence?

  10. privacy and copyright issues on Essay Grading Software For Teachers · · Score: 1

I see serious questions regarding privacy and copyright. If this were a standalone tool (something similar to lint or weblint), this software might be effective and useful. The fact that this is not a standalone tool, the fact that this is a web-based interface, means you have to upload your work into this system. This raises lots of questions. Are they hoarding essays and term papers? What are they doing with this data? They should releast it open-source and just release the tool itself, offer the web interface as an option, but offer the tool standalone.

  11. IDE RAID cards comparison article on Mirroring Controllers - What have been Your Experiences? · · Score: 2, Informative

  14. open standards? on Open Standards for Cell Phone Components · · Score: 2, Informative

How about open standards for cell phone protocols? Who cares about taking pictures on a cell phone. They should first make the protocol (CDMA) open, at least give people an API to work with. I want to see software that runs on my Linux based cell phone that can (for instance) take Caller-ID information and based on that, totally control the functionality of the phone (i.e. dial another phone number, play some PCM WAV audio out the port, etc etc).. This is long overdue.

Who in their right mind would want to make their application execution 4-20 times slower by writing it in an interpreted language like C# or Java. If this wasn't bad enough, how can you require your users to download a 25MB library just to be able to run your "hello world" script. Thats retarded. I'll stick to C/C++ thank you.

  16. num-utils does not look that useful to me on Getting Software Added to Unix Distributions? · · Score: 2, Informative

  17. bulk emailing your resume on Resume Spamming Creates Storage, Legal Snags · · Score: 1

Bulk emailing your resume makes you look like an idiot. Jobspam is a service that will send your resume to jobs based on a complex scoring system. If the job reaches a threshold score, your resumes get sent to that job. Using it on a daily basis, you only respond to jobs that match the score threshold and it can be tweaked on the fly to improve its accuracy. Its a good tool, and it works really well for that purpose.

The fact that the LARGEST banking company in the united states relies on the public internet for ATM transactions is totally disturbing to me. I don't know about the rest of you, but I will never use Bank of America as long as I live becaues of a statement like that. I tried to use a Bank of America ATM earlier this morning, and the transaction timed out. That's BULLSHIT. They should rely on private (telephone, x.25) networks, not the internet, like they always have done previously. I know the Internet is cheaper, but the reliability of financial transactions is at stake here.
