    You don't understand. Metric is The Right Answer. And knowing The Right Answer makes us better than other people who don't know The Right Answer. We're important. We matter.

    In your answer, we don't matter. How can we be important if knowing The Right Answer isn't important? Therefore, the US must officially adopt the metric system.

    Or, if you are not one of those, you must at least be someone who can think for himself. Otherwise you'd rally to the science banner, parrot the words of your designated leaders, and reflexively condemn teh evil BIG business and fossil fuels. You really need to hone your groupthink skills, or you'll be out of the smart people club.

    Not paying for every environmental or science-related pet project is "anti-science" according to this list. Unlimited funding for everything, or you hate science. Environmental groups and leftist foundations have lots of donors and extremely deep pockets. Pay for your own science if it's so important.

    How about just being less of a load on everyone?

    If taxes only paid for government services like police and courts, taxes would be very low. But well over half of government budgets are for giveaways to non-workers.

    While most could agree that tax revenue could probably be better spent these days, the fundamental concept of taxes is not stealing. Taxes are the price of civilization.

    Taxes aren't stealing. Taxing person A to pay for giveaways to person B is stealing.

    Civilization is roads and fire protection and water treatment and courts, not monthly checks and giveaways to non-workers.

    Good for Apple and Google. The government didn't earn the money they want to take. The people at Apple and Google worked hard to earn that money, why should it be stolen from them to pay for giveaways to non-workers?

    Speaking as someone who lives in a country with a history of consistently corrupt, dysfunctional governments, without any kind of police presence in the community, with disgustingly poor health and education services, this litany of complaint and hopelessness sounds to me like nothing more than childish whining.

    Can Bush get some of that perspective? Or is he still a monster rather than just a flawed guy in difficult times?

    He didn't send the IRS after his political opponents, so he's got that going for him, at least.

    Maybe it's time we stopped the blind worship of one politician and the blind hatred of the other one? Have we finally reached that time?

    It's impossible to "reassure the general population". See the anti-vaccine movement for proof of this. The general population will, in general, believe FUD. But Slashdot doesn't have to.

    Given the history we have with things like thalidomide, DDT, leaded gasoline, fen-phen, etc it is not unreasonable that people be genuinely concerned about GMO crops, especially given how widespread they've become with such little public notice.

    How widespread do they have to be, and for how long, before we stop hearing non-specific FUD about them?

    And why are we talking about "GMO crops" instead of a specific GMO plant? Which one is the evil one? What did it do wrong? Why are all the other GMO plants guilty by association?

    Why pick on nuclear science and the nuclear industry? For partisan political advantage. In the 70s and 80s, the anti-nuclear crowd was able to spread lots of FUD -- and they got unlimited media help -- because it helped the left gain political power. Pathogen research offered no such advantage.

    Where are the protestors for the drone war, BTW? Where was the "grim milestone" protest for Obama's 1000th US soldier killed in Afghanistan? Or his 2000th? No partisan political advantage means no (or very, very little) media coverage and no organized protests.

    When they decided to go with bluetooth for PS3 headsets instead of a proprietary wireless protocol? When they decided to let you easily upgrade the PS3 hard drive using any 2.5 inch drive instead of overcharging you for a proprietary hard drive? When they decided to offer free online play instead of charging you $60/year to watch Netflix and play games with your friends?

    There are probably more recent examples, but those 3 are console related.

    I used to think that people in the entertainment industry deserved to get paid for their work. But they keep donating to socialists who steal more and more taxes from me. Since these people don't respect my property rights or my right to get paid for my work, why should I respect theirs?

    And then reject it, and then imagine a better world, and then assert that the rules of the imagined world are the real rules, and then attack anyone who disagrees those are the real rules. People who disagree just love the bad world. Because they are backward and ignorant. And also probably racists.
