After 9/11 they said "the government failed to connect the dots".
Now, 4 years later, we've decided we don't even care to try to connect the dots any more. I guess it's a good thing terrorism doesn't exist any more and we'll never again be threatened by it.
Well, duh: As a consumer, I want better products and service
Well guess what: Taking money from a productive company and giving it to people who produce nothing (lawyers and whiners) is a way to pay more for worse products. Sony will just pass on the cost. If Sony loses a market, their competitors will just raise the price because they won't have to compete with Sony any more.
If they lose $100 million from their next income statement as a direct result, maybe they'll learn.
I don't confuse Sony (or anyone else) losing money with a benefit to myself.
It's a sarcasm-tron. And I actually agree with you.
But wanting revenge against Sony because you heard online that they installed some bad software somewhere is beyond juvenile. And I'm tired of our society being ruled by the feelings of overgrown children.
Yes, let's make all our decisions based on hatred and revenge. That's what the legal system is for. Vengeful motives always lead to such good decision-making too.
...it's crucial that the company get its bottom spanked quite painfully...
This is ridiculous thinking.
Say Sony gets sued for $100 million and loses. Lawyers get $40 million. Some folks who bought their bad CDs get a coupon for $1.00 off a Brittany Spears CD or some bullshit like that.
Why is this "crucial"? What's the benefit to you? Does it make you feel better? Why should anyone care how you feel?
The first process you describe sounds a heck of a lot like democracy, while the second sounds closer to the process that would be used by a dictatorship.
So, in a democracy, one whiny jackass gets to make the decisions by virtue of his whininess? I thought democracies were ruled by the majority.
It's the masses, not the asses.
There's no reason the majority needs to wimp-out and acquiesce to every useless complainer who opens his mouth. (Though they can if they want to.)
You are aware the wikepedia has tangible assets which can be seized if they lose a law suit, right? And that posting derogatory, factually incorrect information with obvious malicious intent about a public figure consitutes legally actionable libel, right?
Hence the correction and apology.
... they have to abide by the same rules as every other content provider in the United States...
The United States needs to pass legal reform ASAP.
The day these start getting installed is the day the public wakes up and we can start getting rid of most of the stupid traffic laws, starting with the completely unnecessary speed limits.
If everyone who broke a traffic law got caught every time, all the traffic laws would get repealed immediately. Freedom would finally be returned to the roads.
In other news, things don't always go the way you want them to. Adults and other folks with a grown-up attitude have learned this and accept it. Yet, in some countries with particularly easy lifestyles, growing up has become an option and some folks just get older without making the emotional transition.
This includes piracy. The movie, record, and software industries routinely claim extremely, ridiculously high losses from piracy to cover up the fact that they make crap that no one wants.
In other words, this article is almost certainly BS, which you could have just assumed when you saw Reuters.
I am much more willing to give my business to those companies that can take a stand.
Provided it's a stand you agree with. And you're not exactly in a huge majority. So don't hold your breath.
I am willing to give my business to those companies that provide me with items I want. Specifically, I buy stuff that's worth more to me than the money I offer in exchange. I'm rational.

Mona Lisa doesn't have emotions. She's made of paint.
Why does a small northeastern state need 2000 IT professionals in it's government?
After you're done with the big fight about the format of the memos, how about working on trying to get that number down to under 1000, m'kay?
Why do you care what they learn?

It's a deterrent. The point is to discourage other would-be malware distributors.
Because it's worked out so well for Sony so far.
...a corporation will learn...
...regardless of any direct benefit...
Why do you care what they learn?
I don't care if anyone learns anything. If they have items I want to buy, I'll buy them based on the benefit to me.
Sounds like: In lieu of a real benefit, we'll motivate ourselves based on pretend benefits and wishes.

Here's the real problem with this episode:
1. Some jackass complains about something
2. People listen and decide they care.
3. Wikipedia is changed to suit the needs of the complainer.
The mistake was #2.
A more correct action:
2. Fix the article.
3. Issue an insincere apology.
4. Ignore subsequent whining by irrelevant jackasses.
5. Continue as before.

Or, more simply stated, boo-fricken-hoo.
Funny, most people I know pray they don't live in the US when they get ill, as a major illness effectively means bankruptcy.
That's incorrect. But I'll take bankruptcy over dying while on a waiting list.

Forests paying the price for biofuels
Careful what you wish for.
Goldmember.
Don't play the laughing boy. There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.
Indian Balloon Tycoon?
These sequels to Railroad Tycoon are getting stranger and stranger.
I'm going to get one of these so I can go visit a cave and eat some butterflies.
Intergalactic aliens at war with the USA? Ok. I understand that.
But who (or what) are these Canadians?
News for nerds. Stuff that matters.
News implies newness. Of course, if we haven't seen it, it's new to us. But we have seen it.

now go play with traffic you obviously worthless meat sack.
But how would I find traffic? Have you heard of any new ways traffic can be monitored?
Lesson: submit it again. And again.
