Being a person who's had absolutely no experience with Netware (and who hates NT), I'd like to know what about Netware you're referring to when you say it's clunky, "DOS on wheels." I'm just. . . curious.

I would think that text, at least, would be preferred.. if your word processor can't do .txt format then you must be using a pencil and paper. However, not everyone has a way to make .pdf, .wps, or .wpd (or whatever Wordperfect's file extension is), including me. I could do .txt, but none of the others (unless I use a school computer). I realize that this isn't everybody, nor am I a majority, but still.. a non-proprietary format please!

I'm gradually getting tired of these no-brain "inventions" which serve the money and not the people.

Me too. Yet everytime someone invents another worthless piece of junk (IMHO) like this, it's touted as being something worth it. At least they don't call it the next best thing since sliced bread, but that's because we all know it isn't. "Advances" like these are simply recessions into the pit of human desparity; we don't need anything more to make us lazy. If you're having troubls using a microwave, then get off your butt and read the instruction manual. If that doesn't work, then learn from experience. If that doesn't work, cook everything yourself.

Ok, so maybe none of those choices work. The thing is, this is pointless! It's insane! It's inane! I can't believe that any self-respecting person would use this, simply because I, in my twisted world of thought, see inventions such as these to be superfluous and extremely ridiculous.

It serves money more than people, because it's one of those gizmos that may have some flash-bang, but don't have real usefulness. How many people are going to want it to look up all sorts of directions on how to cook their food. Does everybody want their food cooked the same? NO! And as someone else has mentioned, if you're on the net with it, could you not be hacked? Now, I have no real ideas as to what that would bring for the user/owner, but I wouldn't want to find out either. The real usefulness of these things is to take more money out of your pocket, and if they're ever actually bought.. then they've served their purpose. You might as well throw it away.

  10. conspiracy theory on Gates Steps Down As CEO, Ballmer In · · Score: 1

Here's one for the conspiracy theorists: I wonder if there's anything, post-potential breakup, to stop the Baby-Microsofts from licensing their code/products to external parties, and, if so, if there's something stopping Gates running off to setup another company repackaging/enhancing the existing Microsoft products. Lots of people would blindly follow Gates if he was to go his "seperate" way.

I had wondered the same thing.. whimsically, because I was wondering how you could honestly get the big Microsoft clan to actually part ways. I mean, I realize that if they gov't forces them to, da dee da. But, if they really want to, are we going to be able to stop them from making nice little partnerships with each other/trying to merge? I'm going to guess that I'm just thinking up silly questions, but, you know, are we really going to be able to instill in them a desire to compete against one another for market share? If we can, then great; they'll do a good job of breaking up. Otherwise, it's like taking naughty children and sitting them in corners in a room while we go off; they'll just get up and play together again.

Which, of course, calls for not only a very talented and flexible robot (to be able to escape the same situation should it be put in it), but a good team of controllers who can work together seamlessly and think on the fly to make their robot win.

They are, as far as I know (and my scope of knowledge isn't much wider than a pinhead), they're the first "big"/significant case against Microsoft (I mean, court case kind of thing) and for them to give up so readily to such a small amount of money suggests, as all have said, that Microsoft can now get away with their junk, and that posing a case against them doesn't work. We need(ed) someone to forge onward and drag them into a bloody (or not, preferably) war in court with a full court decision, etc. A large corporation would be good for this because they'd have the money for the legal team, etc.. and here was Caldera. They failed us. Darnnit!

  15. paranoia about credit cards on Largest Online Credit Card Heist Ever? · · Score: 1

IMHO, the easiest way to avoid problems like this is to simply not have a credit card. Of course, I'm not referring to simply this situation, in which the database was stolen, but in general, in the physical world and in the world of the internet. However, as we all know, that wouldn't be so fun because if you want to order something online, you have to have a credit card. Hence, risk. If you want to charge something in a store/restaurant/hotel/etc. that you are physically at, you have to have a credit card. Hence, risk. oh well

I know we all knew that, but.. the thing is, like you said, if you're going to have a card, just go ahead and use it online and off. you have the same risk either way, no?

  16. the difference that HURD brings on Debian GNU/Hurd Preinstalled by UK Computer Maker · · Score: 1

am I correct in assuming that the [main] difference that is present with HURD is:

The Hurd itself is a system of servers that run on top of the GNU Mach microkernel to manage such things as file systems, network protocols, file access, and the other features that are usually managed by the monolithic Unix and Linux kernels.

The Hurd works in a very different way to Unix/Linux with one of its most important features being translators. These can be modified by the user (as can the whole system), and enable the user to not only seemlessly access files and devices but also networks, so that for instance remote file systems can be accessed, and files edited, with just one command, regardless of whether these files are on a local system, an ftp server or an Internet site.

If that's all.. would someone explain exactly what's so great about that? Am I to assume that Linux and other OSes require more information to be able to access files not on the local drive(s)/using the local filesystem?

I've never heard of HURD before.. so, I'm new to this.

  18. battery life on Songboy Turns GameBoys into MP3 Players · · Score: 1

Aside: I wonder what using the Soundboy does to battery life?

I wonder the same, but, I also wonder how it uses battery life if you happen to have one of those rechargeable battery things. I have one of those.. you charge it for about 8 hours, but you can also play the Gameboy as it's recharging. It lasts for a long time as well, and so I wonder how the Songboy takes its toll on these things. I bought the battery thing so that I wouldn't have to waste money on batteries. Nice piece of equipment.

The other thing about this is it's coming at a time when I:
    • want to sell my Gameboy and all the junk I have with it
    • wouldn't dream of paying $99.00 for this thing, esp. if it's only 16MB
