This will only a affect INTERSTATE calls, not intrastate calls. All a telemarketer has to do is set up a call center in your state and they can call you all they want.
I know Ohio is working on its own Do-Not-Call list to stop the intrastate calls.
Why can't the current SMTP servers keep a list of trusted servers, and anything that is not trusted it severly limits the delivery rate (maybe 1 per second (minute?) and then increase the rate).
It wouldn't eliminate SPAM, but it would slow down its propagation.
Was there supposed to be more than 3 pages to the article. Patrick just kinda trails off at the end complaining about web browsers (where was Mozilla?).
Other then the web browser problem, I agree with everything he said. I'm lucky, I work in education so almost everything is cross compatible and the funky school information system software is becoming web based.
Apple does need to fix the perceived speed of the Macs, they come across slow. Case in point, we are moving from Macintosh Manager under OS 9 to Workgroup Manager under OS X. Log-in times under OS X seem so much slower than OS 9, even though they are the same, around 15-18 seconds. The difference? Under OS 9 there is an indicator that something is happening, but under OS X there is nothing. Now if they played a little animation or something, they would still appear to be fast.
Disregarding the trivialness of this patent, people here are jumping the gun about prior art. This patent isn't for online discussions using software such as Slashcode or PHPBB, it is for discussions related to an object for sale.
A much harder case for prior art, but I'm pretty sure Usenet auctions would invalidate it.
Around 6 months ago I bought a big screen TV, a Toshiba HDTV 42" with the realization that I wouldn't be able to watch broadcasts for probably a couple of years. Luckily, this wasn't to be the fact!
Time Warner (of Columbus, OH) now offers 3 stations in HD. Granted I don't have a tuner, but for $6 a month I got a box from Time Warner that allows me to watch HD broadcasts.
I've only had it for a week, so I can't give a full report, but the HD broadcasts look great. They look better than DVDs. Now if only more stuff was broadcast in HD (why doesn't NBS broadcast there Thursday night lineup in HD?). Shows that aren't that need to be include Buffy, Angel, Enterprise... Smallville is though.
Anyway, I'm happy, and am only out $1,600 for the TV (plus subscription costs). DVDs and TV all look great, and if you do end up getting a HDTV, I would recommend looking into the dish offers (Dish Network or DirecTV). I have Dish Network, and it looks SO much better than the analog cable.
Actually, Mac OS X Server has been around since 1998. I ran version 1.0 and then 1.2. They were nothing like the current OS X.
Anyway, in this case, when you look at the "OS, Web Server and Hosting History for binomial.dhs.org" for this site, it says it was running Linux back in July. So something is wrong...
I noticed in the last episode, Special Edna, it appeared to me that they are starting to use some of the Futurama computer techniques. I noticed several busy backgrounds with parallax scrolling and subtle shadows on the characters. Did anyone else notice it or was it just me?
I noticed it at the IMAX movie and at the amusement park.
Now if only we could abolish the tenure system so we could implement standardized qualification guidelines and periodic testing for the teachers, and require teachers to continue their education (Like nearly every other state licensed profession), that would solve a lot of problems, too.
The state of Ohio is getting rid of permanent teaching certificates and is going to a 5 year certificate. To renew your certificate, you will need to take courses and/or attend seminars, training classes, etc.
Install a firewire or USB 2.0 card in your machine.
Install the Retrospect Software.
Push the button to run the backup
?????
Profit!
These drives are somewhat expensive(~$400), but are hot swappable and you can easily take them offsite.
I work in a school, and our main backups are done onto firewire drives that are rotated throughout the district. These drives are then replaced every ~1-2 years.
Recent studies have shown that one of the factors in ADHD children is the fact that they aren't getting enough sleep. With Ritalin being a stimulant, this "wakes" the child up enough so that their own self control can take over. While I don't think this is the problem in this case (with such a high IQ level), it is something to think about.
OS X's Calculator has several built in convertors, including currency. The currency convertor can update its rates from the Internet. Not the same as having the browser do it, but cool anyhow.
While we may disagree with the idea, as a person who is looking to become a parent in the next couple of years, this is a good idea. Have you seen kids on the Internet? They are very gullible, being brought up in the age of computers. They truely believe that they know all there is about computers and the adults have no idea how to use technology. They click on a ton of pop-ups, especially the ones that try to trick the user (You've got e-mail).
If you don't like it, don't go there, but let parents choose what forms of protection for their kids. (And here I am dreading the day I'm going to have to install Squid and SquidGuard on my home network).
In my great quest for a suitable e-mail program under Windows, I couldn't find anything that suited me. Mozilla e-mail was very close, and it's what I used for awhile. Then Red Hat 8.0 came out and I haven't booted into Windows except to play games...
Try Mozilla's e-mail, it's gotten a lot better from the old days. And try to use imap to access your e-mail, it makes it a lot easier to move back and forth between e-mail packages.
Um, USB was brought to market and standardized largely by Apple. You could by a mac with USB ports off the shelf probably 2 years before you could find it built into a new PC.
Correction, almost all PC's since around 96-97 have shipped with USB ports, it's just that until the iMac came out, hardware manufacturers still relied on using the serial/parallel ports. And it didn't help that Win95 didn't support USB untill version 95B, and even then it was shakey.
Actually, the late 1800's was when technology affected human lives (at least in America) the most. Before that time it wasn't unusual to go for years without communication to your family that was only a few hundred miles away. Then the telegraph, steam engine, mass production, the industrial revolution began to really change things.
It is an exciting time now, but don't kid ourselves that this is the golden age of advances. We're still doing the same thing, just slightly faster. Give me a call when we have anti-gravity devices, holodecks, and transporters.
While I don't think any manufacturer specifies the speed of the machine to get the maximum amount of battery life, this article does not tell us what the speed of the mobile P4 is while it is in energy saving mode...
There are many reasons why Dell wants to put a desktop CPU in the machine, why don't they give the user the option of running it at full speed while on battery sacrificing battery life. I know my Apple PowerBook gives me several options on energy consumption while on battery, including running full out.
Anyway, no manufacturer states the speed of their machine while on battery. They usually state the battery life depends on configuration and use. Dell is no different. If you go to the specifications page on the 250N you will see that it states that Power management features limit processor speed when running on battery. It's not like they are hiding this information from the purchaser, learn to read the fine print. I don't think that this is enough to get that excited about...

I use FreeSCO as a floppy based router/masq machine. Quickest setup ever!

They do offer Showtime and HBO, I just don't want to pay for them! :-) I don't know about DiscoveryHD, but I would pay for that!
Not Showtime or HBO, just WBNS, WWHO, and WCMH.

They are talking about the AOL client, in which Gecko is the engine.

Early marijuana use can lead to harder drugs, says Australian twin study

By using ReplayPC or DVArchive you can download the shows directly to your machine for further editting or burning to VCD/DVD. No hacking involved.
Or take the Hoth figures, pack them in snowballs and throw them at trees... Heads were usally the first to break off.
What were we thinking back then...

Tons more info here.
As of 8:38 EST, that works out to be $41.34.

Or you run down to Radio Shack and purchase an RF modulator....
