Just not officially, from their latest news;
"Full LLC1 flight
One June 2, we conducted a complete LLC 1 operational profile at the Oklahoma Spaceport. Everything went great. Representatives from AST and the X-Prize Cup were present. This was the first flight under experimental permit rules from a licensed spaceport. Both legs of the flight landed within a meter of the pad center, and our operation time was only an hour and a half."
Read the whole description here. It is full of all manner of technical goodies. In fact I can't wait for their next monthly update.
Maybe this idea has been proposed and shot down, but...
Please comment with any constructive criticism you may have.
The basic problem is how to know if an article is trustworthy or not. This solution is based on the philosophy that respect is a personal choice, not an authoritarian decree.
In my opinion this can be solved with a system that is not terribly different than the slashdot friend/foe idea. Basically you just create a system that is capable of tracking your "friends" opinion of a particular state of an article, and maybe your friends friends to a specifiable distance.
In a Nut Shell: Abe looks at an article and votes that it is accurate. Betty looks at the same article at a later time and also thinks it is accurate, then Betty is given the option to include Abe in her list of peers. repeat for users C. D. E.... If anyone disagrees they just don't include Abe et al. in their list of peers. Eventually there will be clusters of people who all agree on a particular representation of the information. When Betty looks at another article and sees that Abe approved of it then there is a reasonable degree of certainty that the material is acceptable. Betty is also given a view of (if any) differences that have been inserted since Abe signed off on the article and can approve or not of each change. Abe and Betty can automatically reciprocate with regard to the information.
Once this is set up, users can subscribe to "peer clusters" with a given radius of friends of peers. Eventually you will have well recognized and respected groups of friend/peer/editors that are then the de facto authority on any set of articles. As an arbitrary user you can view the article in either the latest edit or the latest reviewed edit and determine for yourself if you agree with any changes.
Now, there is the possibility of waring peer clusters, in which case the user simply determines which faction they agree with and no further action by an oversight committee is required. In short, since this is user based content, let the users decide who they trust. "Of the People, by the people, and for the people".
I suppose that I will have to satiate my gambling habits with options, futures and currencies.
Would someone please code a flash game that looks like roulette, blackjack, slots etc that was actually an interface to some brokerage for short term investments?
Very strange, a web developement tool story shows up as "story currently under construction" with a red title bar. I click on the readmore link and the story goes blue. Then reloading the main page it is green.
Is this standard procedure for all new stories or is this some kind of gimick/pun on web developement stories?
Once general wiretapping goes into effect on "public" internet connections in conjunction with the patriot acts 'no warrant necessary'. This will become a major revenue source for the police as they place the equivalent of automatic red light traffic tickets on any unlawful internet traffic.
Can someone with some knowledge of orbital cameras tell me why the resolution is only ~1 meter?
I remember reading a Pop. Sci. article back in 1980 or so that showed declassified spy satellite images of someone in Central Park NY holding a book and you could read the title (approx. 1 inch high lettering). Is it not useful to have that much detail or what?
The moon is a harsh mistress p231, Robert A. Heinlein:
I really hope that this turns out to be realistic. If an industry can be built around going to and from the moon then space will become a corporate endevour. Which means that we will soon have all manner of neat science/engineering going on from lunar telescopes (observing at all frequencies) to mass drivers (rail guns for cargo) to a 1/6 gravity New Las Vegas lunar resort - at costs more reasonable than big government budgets.
Exciting news indeed IF (thats a really big if) this is not just another governmental pipedream.
The main story title and the "other" stories seem to frame the main story description. In my mind this implies that the other stories are somehow related to the main story item which is not true - except that they get posted in chronological order. It seems to me that the "Read More... | story stats | msg count" should be the bottom framing element of the main story (ie. a frame that is flat on top and curved on bottom) and the each of the other stories should be distinct in little frames that are curved both top and bottom.
NB. I refer to "frame and "element" not as HTML items but layout concepts.
Instead of a mass driver, checkout the idea that these people have. Using ion thrusters to drive a lighter than air (at some altitude) airfoil/ballon to LEO. http://www.jpaerospace.com/
A quick read through the article (sacrilege, I know) claimed a small amount of jerkiness on uncompressing images. Does anyone have any idea how this would affect various hardware? For instance I have a 333MHz Pentium with ~144MB of mem that I expect (WAG) would get extremely "jerky" using this.
It seems that lego blocks with builtin components - resistors, capacitors,...,555 timers, quad nand,... etc. and conductive connectors on each of the studs/receptors of the brick would be a really convenient way to prototype circuitry. The only drawback would be burning out a component but if the lego brick had replaceable components you could even work around that.
LEGO hardrives could be memory for your circuit/robot/whatever and... and...
Does anyone else think that would be reall spiffy?
Before this goes all big brother... I just want to say that I hove no problem with targeted advertising at all. If there is a way that does not impose on my personal freedoms to selectiviely show me things that I might be interested in purchasing it is not only ok but much preffered to the massive spamvertisement campaigns that go on now.
In regard to your point about the material not beeing freely available. These machines have wireless if the school can afford to create an access point then there are wonderful resources like project gutenburg http://www.gutenberg.org/ and wikibooks http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Main_Page that will provide an imense amount of information just for the getting.
Providing a library of information, except in contrast to libraries every student can have a copy and in the instance of wikibooks, they can even contribute to the overall wealth of knowledge if they desire.
The way I see it, there are is a subtle but important distinction that needs to be made. Evolution claims that there is interspecies developement, the evidence shows *only* intraspecies developement. Evolution as a theory extrapolates from intraspecies evolution to interspecies evolution. There is not one single instance in the fossil record (that I am aware of) that shows a complete change from one species to another! In fact, it is statistically significant that in the abundance of the fossil record that no complete change exists. This implies that there is some other effect causing new species to form, ID or not, I don't know.
I don't doubt that within a species the pressures of natural selection act to create new capabilities. However, until there is solid evidence that the pressure of natural selection can cause one species to develop into another I will not accept evolution as a theory. For what its worth I don't accept intelligent design either. Neither side has enough evidence to be accepted by any rational person, this is the true scientific viewpoint.
What is missing is an automated versioning of everything in/etc
I don't have an issue with multiple file formats, like another poster said, find and grep do the job quite nicely. However, what I don't like is that there is no history of modifications. No single way to undo any modification.
My proposal is to leave format of/etc as free wild as it is, but! put the whole directory under a filesystem based revision control like http://www.ext3cow.com/
Others have mentioned that they only get bothered when switching from one display to another. I think this is because your brain (optic whatever) can vary the uptake rate of information from your eye.
Test it out, try laying on the floor beneath a ceiling fan on low or medium. If you watch fan long enough you can stabilize the apparent interference rotation rate of the blades.
When you can vary the rotation rate at will, you have less chance of being annoyed by flicker since you adjust rapidly. If you can't see the rate change then your eyes can't compensate for the flicker. Hence they get tired more easily.
What we need is some form of write only media that can be cached for later verification. Paper is just the most redily available form that I know of, not to mention that it is already widely accepted.
How much more broken does our system have to get before it becomes completely disfunctional.
The way I see it, These guys will basically crank random noise into the patent system until virtually every idea that trys to come into production will have a lien of some kind on it. Thereby blocking any kind of developement by the small guy, only the mega corps will be able to produce new ideas and they will keep the pace as slow as possible to maximize there profit returns on current technology. In short THIS Bites.
I was just wondering if you saw the implicit contradiction in your statements.

I'm going to establish a charity for those who believe using a dollar sign in Microsofts name does anything other than diminish one's argument.
Your whole post drives at the point that Microsoft is in the business of making money and not making good software, yet you come along and decry those who would say the same thing in a much more concise form, "M$".

FYI, the ground leg of a properly wired outlet is physically attached to an earth ground at the nearest panel. Thus any "hot case" would also be a shock risk for a switch plate screw/outlet cover screw/water pipe/steam pipe/puddle of water/or other circuit direct to ground.
BTW, you will never find a UL listed hot case in America unless it has been modified by the owner in an amazingly ignorant fashion. You would have to not only short the hot leg to the case, but you would also have to disconect the the appliance ground at the same time.
If you have a microwave you know exactly how to build one. The freq. that a microwave functions at is damn near spot on 2.4 GHz so all you need is several rolls of metal window screen where the mesh size is the same as your microwave.
Oh Yah, you also need to make sure that it is well grounded, you can tie directly to the ground lug of any triple prong outlet, or steam pipe, etc.
Wouldn't it be great if we could charge all those who signed the bill into law with attempted treason?
