I think when Donald Trump is gone, it will be technology news. I think he rigged or unfairly influenced the election, at least indirectly with collusion with the Russians. I think it's Trump with his lying ways, not Obama. Though GW junior made things toxic, didn't he?
I know this is important to world events, but shouldn't this site really be about... science and technology? Post anything you want, of course. It's just regrettable that you set precedents like this. David Bowie was at least weird enough that he appealed to hacker culture....
I wish Linux was just great. I've given up hope on computers after seeing Lenovo Canada's website and how I can't find their own products on it but can on a local vendor's website. And how their menu jumps around depending on how I scroll. Linux is the best operating system in the world, but the bar is pretty low when compared to the most popular desktop OS in the world, Windows. And until the FOSS community gets its act together, or until the world is full of responsible people instead of irresponsible ones, a community that depends on intelligence and integrity won't get the appreciation it deserves and ambitious people will look to more profitable places for their livelihood.
Sometimes I like to watch their videos and hear how great their products sound. But then I hear about this kind of thing. Or walk into an Apple Store. Or read more about how their keyboards suck. Or see that Apple is out of touch with reality in their design goals, just upspeccing what they have, which is of course the safe route. Apple is hypocritical. They used to be about taking risks, changing the world, and doing the right thing when no-one else believed in them, at least when it came to design and integrity. Now they're the golden standard (literally, in the case of the original Apple Watch) of decadence and profitable stupidity. Eat shit, Apple.
I had a first-generation Chromebook for five years. Google did not honour its promise for "Fast Web" when it changed to the Aura desktop interface, which seemed to cut the performance in half. I've also been using a variety of Chromebooks at Best Buys, but mostly the Pixelbook, which is very overpriced for what you get. I know the typical laptop or desktop computer has its annoyances, especially with Windows updates or just a lot of extra stuff you might not think you need, and there are some obvious advantages with Chromebooks like quick updates, great security, and simplicity of the operating system... but you shouldn't trust Google with everything. Nor should you be stuck with the Chrome web browser as your central operating system. Just run Linux, run whatever browser you want, and stay in control of your own computer. You should be more concerned with privacy than you are with convenience. Chromebooks are okay, don't get me wrong. I just wouldn't want to use one as my primary computing device again. I'd rather get a cheap, used laptop, install Linux, and have it my way... NOT Google's.
It might be inconvenient, but it removes problems and gets the job done so that the technology is much cheaper much more quickly. I'm actually a little disappointed to read this on Slashdot without some acknowledgement that nuclear and fossil fuels, though currently used and useful, aren't really needed if we CAN get everything from renewable sources. It's as if the poster or author is saying that we shouldn't update to the latest computers or other technology when it's still cheaper and more convenient to use old technology, even if old technology is inconvenient and expensive longterm and switching to the latest technology will introduce far greater efficiencies that everyone will be ready to enjoy. It's not like everyone is trying to use the latest smartphone here. It's more like they're switching from alkaline batteries to lithium. Or nuclear and fossil fuels to wind and solar. THAT'S WHY. And while old technologies SHOULD be used where needed and practical, switching to renewables should DEFINITELY be encouraged and even demanded where the pain of switching is WORTH IT.
Show me an OS that can replace W10 with everyday apps. There isn't anything out there that can handle Acrobat, MS office, Outlook, Exchange and other items, other than Windows. Oh, AD capability is a must out of the box.
Don't tell me what to use. Tell me what you are trying to accomplish, and I will find a solution. That's my job as an engineer. Of course you can't run Exchange on Linux without virtualization. But if your goal is to get e-mail, calendaring, and contacts I can do that for you.
Need Acrobat? Sorry. Try coming to me and saying "I need to read PDFs" or "I need to save this document as a PDF". Sure. I can solve those problems for you.
"I want Office on Linux". No, you don't. You want some of the *features* Office provides...on Linux.
Actually, during the Vista fiasco, one member of my Linux Users Group was running MS Office on a Linux distro and it ran better on Linux than it did on Windows. WINE and Crossover enable this, ESPECIALLY when it comes to MS Office.
I think everyone knows this and is making excuses for Microsoft Windows because they're used to it and it's just easier for them to keep doing the same stupid things over and over ~ like in everything else in this world. But Windows is stupid because it's poorly designed and caters to that very same lazy, stupid attitude.
Linux or UNIX was well-designed. It runs the world's servers and is therefore a much more powerful target. But it's really because Windows users are more often incredibly stupid and lazy (and that Microsoft can't or won't make up for these qualities, only exploit them) that Windows will always be a mess, security-wise.
If Linux was put in the same position of market dominance, not only would it have all the benefits it has now but it would make far better use of the whole world watching Linux for problems and ACTUALLY FIXING THEM.
Frankly, WannaCry is just taking advantage of stupid, lazy Windows users and their employers. The world deserves WannaCry because it's just taking advantage of all its opportunities. Just like Microsoft. You deserve each other. You were made for each other. Linux users might not be better, but they're more likely to be. And their initiative will serve them well when they're using their computers or even playing around with the code. While others are shelling out more money to the bad people and companies built specifically to exploit their vulnerabilities and keep them open. BECAUSE IT MAKES THEM MORE MONEY.
If people were responsible and intelligent, this wouldn't be an issue. But they're not and it is. Enjoy your bloatware, idiots!
Google used to have a good image in my opinion. Their slogan "Don't be evil" rang true for many people. But Google is just like any other corporation, now: They're all about the money. It's too bad the world and people in it don't reward responsibility and Google is actually just fitting into their stupidity and apathy. That being said, I hope Google suffers horribly for this, especially concerning minors. Then again, if parents are too stupid and lazy to care, to hell with their kids, who are pretty much younger versions of themselves. Screw the children now as if their future selves deserve it. For shame!
Oh eat me. This is the Bank of Canada and we have a real history. If they want to commemorate our country using a Konami code, they might as well put stuff on the bill to match. Perhaps that Jim Carrey was Canadian and HE forsook his citizenship to become American. Why the hell not? And I'm not "baselessly" ascribing ulterior motives. "If" taken seriously. It's the celebration of 150 years as a country. Might as well make it Canadian Tire money while they're at it, right? You don't seem especially bright. Do you aspire to become a little more American yourself?
Aw, well, see it really is ridiculous to include a cheat code if we're to take ourselves seriously at all. If you haven't checked it out, it plays O Canada, our national anthem, and bills drop from above. It's actually pretty 8-bit. It just has no place in any serious celebration of Canada and is therefore inappropriate for the Bank of Canada to use on its site.
As for the stick up my arse, there really is a special place for it there now. Fortunately, after all these years, it's dissolved into a kind of personal poutine I whip out and fling at those who lack the resolve to develop a singular wit, the responsibility to avoid being a persistent nuisance, and the intelligence to apply both in appropriate measure:-p
Some gamer probably came up with this idea, which is dumb. This kind of thing is about as tasteful as the Bank of Canada playing April Fools' Day jokes with our currency, only they waited until our 150th anniversary to cheapen it into some gimmicky cheat code. What does that say about our country and its history? If taken seriously, it suggests that even before Canada began as a country ~ the one that's 150 years old this year ~ we cheated, which is kind of true given that we invaded this country, treated First Nations viciously, and did it all against the rule of law which _did_ exist before we came here. We don't have to take ourselves very seriously, but in being self-deprecating we shouldn't downright mock ourselves and all meaning our country might have. Shame on the Bank of Canada and shame on Canadians if they think this is funny.
Then again, I live in a country where the national police force, the Reckless Cowardly Murderous Perjurous RCMP, have very publicly gotten away with murder, so maybe some video game relic on the Bank of Canada's website is actually appropriate.
I should have looked at this before posting my own similar post with time-stamped links to specific parts, especially right before the franchise laws are mentioned. I'll leave mine up, but feel free anyone (like a moderator) to let me know if I should take it down. Glad you beat me to the post;-)
This is a YouTube video from Adam Ruins Everything on "The Real Reason Car Dealerships Are the Worst", starting at 0:50 (https://youtu.be/uMWmYJOa-BM?t=50s) telling why you can't just go into a store and buy a variety of cars or order them online on Amazon, for example, then (and this is the point) at 1:18 (https://youtu.be/uMWmYJOa-BM?t=1m18s) goes into the FRANCHISE LAWS the car dealerships got passed. If I can't post with these links, you can look up the same video on YouTube easily with "adam ruins car dealerships". Hopefully, this sheds some light on the subject:-)
But that we'd depend on these rules is the trouble. If the machines change or are altered from these protections on humanity, we don't have the same options as we would if the AI were human. And we may never be able to "kill" AI if it acts in self-defence. It would be too fast and enable itself to get faster and more efficient. Then again, without a life, all it has and can have are very sophisticated theories and mimicry.
No, he'll be on Linux. This kind of crap is going too far and Microsoft comes across as a huge hypocrite after criticizing Google. Linux actually has plenty of games on it and the developers themselves will get sick of this garbage and be even more open to Linux and getting it more support ~ the kind of support Apple and Microsoft refuse to give it because it goes against profitability for them. Like totally open standards that don't trap anyone. Programs and formats that work across platforms with zero obligation ~ are platform agnostic.
Microsoft has pushed too hard, and although this might not be the last thing they get away with, it is noticed by all the informed people who actually make informed decisions about computers. To everyone else, it might as well be more malware, and those are the kind of dots Microsoft is connecting here. They're the disease-infested and doing this they're indulging the role even further.
I don't think it will take a few years. The hardware is already there for great computers but Microsoft has done decidedly little to improve technology or computing lately. Linux is a step up and will improve dramatically should they become popular. Because while hardware manufacturers can write open source drivers, Microsoft's existence wholly depends on being able to sell software ~ not their hardware. Microsoft is skeezy that way, and their neediness is coming out the worst now that there are so many better options.
Instead of increasing interest, they've made all their competitors look more trustworthy. Microsoft is showing its true colours for everyone in the world to see.
Linux is just waiting there, slowly but surely improving. And when average, uninitiated people get used to it, nothing Microsoft does can ever turn them back. Ever. Microsoft doesn't know how to make truly great software so much as better-looking and easier software, specifically because people are used to it and have already invested so much of their habits, experience, and education into it.

Let them do it. Let's see how they like their internet then.
That should solve the problem.

I agree. This has nothing to do with technology or science. It doesn't belong on Slashdot. And I have a degree in Writing!
It might be inconvenient, but it removes problems and gets the job done so that the technology is much cheaper much more quickly. How To Become A Hacker, by Eric S. Raymond http://www.catb.org/esr/faqs/h... There's other stuff by ESR, like The Art of Unix Programming: http://catb.org/~esr/writings/... But essentially, I think you'll find the first web page gives you a good start.
I think you should look for a replacement, not the fastest distro. elementary OS is Linux and looks like macOS. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
