  1. Weather related problems.. on Experiences with DirecWay Satellite Internet · · Score: 3, Informative

The only thing I would be worried about is if weather affected it as it does Direct TV.

Everyone I know with Direct TV is basically screwed when any amount of rain or snow is falling.

I got mine working about 4 months ago. The realization of the cool geek factor finally set in after a Christmas party. My girlfriend had to drive me home as I was quite drunk, and I somehow managed to hook everything up and rant to my friends on IM whilst traveling at 80MPH on the freeway.

I decided then that it was cool.

  18. Re:Digital? on A Canticle for Leibowitz · · Score: 1

Probably not, as nuclear/thermonuclear weapons emit a large electro-magnetic pulse which damages electronics. No electronics, no way to read data. It's somewhat interesting that many war senarios began with the Russians exploding a -large- (20 megaton + ) high over the central U.S. because the EMP would disrupt command, control and communications enough to limit our ability to retailiate.

As for the book, I've read it several times. Rather dark, but still relevant. Good read.

  19. wow...gimme on Scratching MP3s with a real turntable · · Score: 1

If I'm spinning, digital is bad.

Besides, I really don't want to carry my computer to every show. Things go wrong with computers, especially in a dark, sweaty, smokey environment such as a party or whatever. When was the last time you've seen a Technics 1200 have memory problems or a hard drive crash?

For making tapes, I just run the output from my mixer into my computer and record it with some nice multi-tracking software. That way, I can layer to my hearts content and when I'm happy, burn to a CD or record to a DAT.

In my opinion, scratching is supposed to be gritty noisy and analogue, not something digital. But then again, that's just me getting whimsical.

Well, you can use Timbuktu, which allows you to do pretty much the same thing, except it's graphical. I use it almost daily to maintain several servers where I'm at.

if I can keep one up for more than a week while doing hard stuff on it

I've gotten mine to do much better. My main server is running FTP/HTTP/POP/SMTP software with no problems. There are a few tricks you can apply to make it quite stable. My universities NT box that runs the POP/SMTP server for students is down at -least- 50% more than my MacOS server.

if it finally has preemtive multitasking

if it finally has protected memory

It does to a certain extent. From what I've experienced, it works about the same to slightly better than your average Windows box. ( I don't know about NT ) It's obviously no where near what unix/linux/etc people enjoy, but it's certainly there. Go to www.MacKiDo.com/Software/memprotect_MacOS_Win95.ht ml to read more.
