You need to read Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series. The series has 3 books that have won the Hugo for Best Novel and 3 others that were nominated but didn't win. It is one of the best scifi series out there.

Available from Baen. DRM free. Heck, completely free from here.

    http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/

Go to the Cryoburn CD to find the files.

This is a site that is hosting the CDs that Baen will include in some hardcover books. The CDs are freely redistributable. Baen is aware of the site and while it doesn't actively support it, they haven't asked them to stop.

You can get the complete set of the Vorkosigan books (minus one story called Memory that was forgotten when they made the disc, ironic huh) including the most recent book that had the CD included. That's right, they included an ebook version when you bought the hardcopy.

The files are all drm free and they give you the option of getting the epub, mobi, lrf, txt, html and another format I'm forgetting.

Hunters also serve the purpose of keeping the populations under control.

In South Dakota for the past three years, there has been lower than average rainfall resulting in less food for the wildlife. The deer population was also expanding too fast. If hunters weren't around to thin out the populations, then wasting disease would have spread through the deer herds.

The money from hunting licenses goes directly to environmental programs that keep the hunting land in good shape.

I'm also in favour of a waiting period. I don't want someone buying a gun because he just found out his wife is cheating on him. I'm also in favour of registering guns which includes ballistics. A bullet pulled from a murder victim should be traced back to the gun that fired it and the person who purchased it.

Waiting periods cut both ways though. What about the woman who is being stalked and has gone to the police, but they can't do anything?

Background checks are one thing, but waiting periods don't do a thing to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.

A ballistic database is pointless at the time of purchase for a number of reasons.

    1) The ballistic markings change over time through simple usage.
    2) The markings are easy to change quickly using a file. If someone is planning on using a gun in a crime and a ballistic database is in place, it only takes a few moments to render the gun unfindable.
    3) Prohibitably expensive. And before you say "if it saves one life or catches one criminal" we live in a culture of tradeoffs. We don't have speedlimits of 5 mph, even though that would dramatically cut down on car accident deaths. The costs associated with a speedlimit that low are thought to be unacceptable compared to the benefits achieved with a higher speed limit. I know that's an absurd comparison, but the same thing goes for the 55 mph speed limit.
    4) Unnecessary. Over 99% of guns in the US are never used in a crime. A database of ballistics of bullets taken from crime victims is one thing, but to test new guns is futile.

There are many reasons not to report a defensive gun use to the police. One is the hassle you go through.

I don't know for a fact that this is true with the Two Towers, but it's not that hard to believe.

  15. Re:Facts vs. Conclusions on An Unbiased Analysis of Gun Crime vs. Gun Control? · · Score: 2, Insightful

His numbers are higher for a very good reason.

The DOJ numbers only count the times where a police report was filed. This either means the person that defended themselves a) fired the weapon or b) was in an area where they felt comfortable telling the police what happened.

This leaves out all the times that a gun is used in self defense but never fired. In fact, most of the time a gun is not fired. Criminals look for easy targets. Simply the sight of a gun is usually enough to cause any person intent on harm to stop. There is nothing a home invader hates to hear more than the sound of a pump shotgun being worked.

Leaving the difference in definitions of what constitutes a defensive gun use (DGU), even using the DOJs numbers of DGUs, you have over 100,000 a year. Compare this to the 15,000 murders by guns, or even the 40,000 deaths (a number that includes suicides, and police/civilian shootings in self defense).
