The paper receipts are actually what I like about the bill.
Let me start by syaing: I'm the main propoent in my office of moving off of paper. Faxes, project plans, conference room calendars, printed e-mail(!)... all a waste of paper and, frankly, money (paper, toner, electricity, etc.). So I understand where you are coming from with this.
However, this is different.
To start with, it allows the voter to look over the receipt to ensure that the votes he/she made were recorded correctly by the service.
Secondly, in the case of touchscreen computing, it creates the sorely-needed papertrail for situations like Washington, where the governor's race was settled by less than 200 votes.
Thirdly, the receipts can be easily designed to biodegrade, or be printed on recycled paper with water-solable inks. They do not have to be environmentally antagonistic.
But I do have to underscore my first point again: the receipts would be a safeguard.
It looks like the Thumb actually slips over Ford's real thumb, or it's a bionic addition. But, look at the trailer again - I thought I saw a metal band at the bottom of Ford's thumb.
Don't know about that... the publisher for Organizer Plus is Summitsoft, not Nintendo (http://www.gamespy.com/company/490/490745.html). That said, I'm sure Organizer Plus is some sort of answer for the PDA folks out there, but I don't think it's the Palm OS/
Speaking as someone who runs a help desk, I can readily agree that people do not know what OS they are running. Except for the Mac, Solaris and Linux users, or the power Windows users, I tend to get an answer along the lines of "Microsoft 97" when I ask for the OS, if I get anything that close...
Simple... just don't buy Apple's RAM. Buy the least you can get and move on to a RAM vendor.
Next, if you're careful, I've never seen Apple try to prove someone's been in a case and broken their warranty. Yes, if you open the case with a can opener they might try to tell you "no."
And, finally, when my mother wanted a new PC a few years back, and I handed her specs for three different vendors (including Apple), she went with a Sony (not on my list) and I am STILL expected to support it (even though I work on a Mac, have a Mac at home, and loaned her an older Mac when her Sony's hard drive decided to slip this mortal coil). It comes down to: you'll support what your family member wants to get. If you're lucky, they'll listen to you when you suggest what that should be, but that's a rare thing in this day and age.
Personally, the sooner I can get my mother onto a Mac mini and off the Vaio, the happier I become...
Explain yourself. How is Bush not tettering on a totalitarian state.
Even Bob Barr, of the American Conservative Union (and a former rabid-dog House Manager during the Clinton Impeachment), has joinedwiththe ACLU to criticize this administration's moves to hinder personal rights in this country. How in the world can you say this is not a government flirting with fascism?
League is not what anyone would place as Moore's finest, nor do I think he meant it to be. It's fun, and it's enjoyable fun. Don't read too much into it.
And, trust me, Margaret is still a fascist and even raised her son to be one (you do pay attention to current events, don't you?). Being a fascist does not mean one has to exterminate six million of a religious minority in concentration camps or make the trains run on time... those are just examples of extreme fascism.
I'm currently digging through one of my unused bedrooms in my house trying to find my V issues, but I could have sworn Moore actually wrote a small column in one of those issues explaining how V ended up where it did.
V did not finish in the Warrior run. I think it got about 50% through and either Moore gave up for a while or the mag went belly-up (any really old-timers out there who can say?). The entire story was not told until it reached DC. So, while the folks who read the Warrior stuff were the first on the block (so to speak), any of us who read the DC stuff as it came out finished the series at the same time as the first comers did.
I just uncovered all of my copies of Fish Police. Man, I have a lot of reading to do.:)
Cool... I hadn't seen that (man, I hope that's an actual picture of the mask).
One can only hope they are referring to Guy Fawkes, but a quick search of Wikipedia shows that Nixon was elected in 1968 on 11/5, along with other little milestones in US history. Do I think they would equate Nixon's election to the impact Guy Fawkes Night has in V? I don't think so, but I'm not entirely sure.
So, it could be faithful, or it could be trite. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...
No, definitely not. I'm just suggesting it has taken a different face and has appeared in the guise of white males from the southern US, not upper-class British twits.;)
It's been a long time since Thatcher, though, and that was who Moore was warning us about in V.
The movie is either going to be one of three things: 1) nice and close to the source; 2) a complete hack job; or 3) updated to take on Bush administration policies.
If it's #3, be prepared for it to take place in the US and not the UK... and if that's the case, things could be either fucking brilliant or fucking lame.
It did not start as a graphic novel, though. When we old timers first got our hands on it, it was a 12 issue miniseries...
I think I just brought those in some things I picked up from my mother's house, actually. I'm going to have to pick though the books and see if they're still around...
I'm not defending Apple, but you are wrong about a few things: Nick is not a kid - he's 19 and that is an adult in every state in the union and they are focusing on actions he's taken since he became an adult. Secondly, Apple has been hurt. Not drastically, but they have been hurt. You need to look at the stock performance from yesterday. Normally, a product announcement from them send the stock price up. However, because Think Secret accurately forecasted the iPod shuffle, the Mac mini, iWork, etc., there were no surprises. Stock analysts had already discussed a flash-based iPod to death before the holidays, thus destroying a ton if free buzz. I mean, look at Think Secret's keynote wrapup and see how much they really were right on the money about. Asteroid really seems to be the only thing they were off about, and most seem to suspect that that device is actually done and almost ready to go. If I were in R&D or upper management at Apple, I would be pissed as hell about those rumor reports.
Nick found someone who is playing fast and loose with their NDA and Apple wants to know who that person(s) is. That's why they're taking him to court. There is precedence here as Nick may not be considered a traditional journalist by many courts in this country, and will thus be ordered to reveal his sources. The other possibility is that Apple sued Nick to see if they can lure the person(s) who broke their NDA out into the open.
In the end, this could turn into an interesting case. I would love to see the Supreme Court's take on this, because it could seriously define the rights the alternative media sources on the net actually have - for better or worse.
We are not the audience. We may be a secondary consideration, but we are not the audience. They are trying to focus on people who walk into the stores. The computer, and box, weigh around three pounds. I can go into the Apple Store at a local mall, put down my credit card, and walk around with a new computer in my shipping bag while I go to other stores.
As a secondary consideration, you are right: Those of us who have never had the chance to play around with a Mac might be tempted. I would argue, though, that those folks can get a cheap G4 PowerMac on eBay that will give them loads more expansion.
This computer is for all of the folks we know who aren't saavy with IT...
Much closer to 18 months, actually, and that was the case even before Mac OS X. Apple is releasing a major update every 18 months (roughly) to the OS just as it has for almost 10 years.
My biggest grudge with a fellow just dropping out of a party was: I was out in the Dunes with my wife (when we were working on the subjob quest), and we had a good group going. However, two of the members were Japanese and a third was very, very new to the game and had no idea how to handle macros, chain attacks, etc. Thus, my wife and I spent most of our time speaking with the autotranslator and explaining how to create a voke macro to the newbie. The party leader, who really had gotten a good group going, just up and disappeared! The party suddenly disbanded, he went running off, and I blacklisted my first ever player.
All things considered, since my wife and I are a BLM/WHM team, we really have been getting good parties in the past few months. Static ones have been difficult, though, because real life just collides with FFXI. But, man, my fishing rocks!:)
The Doctor could leave his Time Lord job and attempt to bring out a hit single... "Free Love on the Free Love Space/Time Continuum" anyone?
Get off your ass and do some grassroots work. Stop reading /. on a Sunday and go door-to-door.
The only thing defeating your ideal view of how this country is to be run is you.
Money can be defeated. Not always, but it can be. A strong grassroots campaign always comes out on top.

Do you think the theaters will allow towels with sections of pre-soaked popcorn butter, nacho cheese and salsa on them? Maybe some hot dog grease?

I think I'll go see it tonight. :)

The asteroid will still be kinda cool, though. :)

You're think 1984, the commercial. This is actual footage of Steve Jobs onstage introducing the Macintosh.
And I wholeheartedly agree with you. Five or ten years away from a regular series could do wonders for the entire franchise.
