Yes, I'm sure you'd be saying "Thank God for space debris" if you were one of the family members of the crew who died. It certainly was convenient for them to die to save you some money.
Oh, wait, did it save you money? Let's look at this... $600,000,000 to launch (I'll take your number because I'm too lazy to look it up). There are about 100,000,000 taxpayers in this country, so assuming two launches per year, you have saved yourself $12/year. Go buy that new car you've been lusting over with that. 12 fucking dollars, man, and you are bitching! Maybe buying two subs from Subway is more important than a bunch of scientific research, but we won't debate that. The annual budget of NASA is 16 billion, which comes out to $160/year/taxpayer for EVERYTHING they do (satellites, mars missions, aerodynamics research, plasma physics, etc). The WEEKLY budget of the Iraq war is 5 billion, and that is just the Iraq war not all of the defense dept.
Even if you'd rather save the $12/year to not launch, did you even think what it costs to research the failure and fix the issues? The return to flight costs were around 1.2 billion (that included all the research into the accident and all the new testing and procedure development). They haven't launched in two years and only had three launches planned in that time, so you saved all of $3/year. Woooooo!
And astronauts have real jobs when they aren't flying. Some are doctors, some are plasma physicists, some are just normal engineers doing research. They aren't always training for a new mission; they are using their single paycheck to do a normal engineering job until it is time to train and fly.
OK, most of what you said is both true and insightful, which is why I bought the heater core for a car, the aquarium pump and scientific tubing instead of the Xtreme stuff most sites sell. The one mistake you made was the waterblock remark.
Yes, it is only 50 cents worth of copper, but you kind of need that thing that mills it out. I certainly don't have anything here in my toolbox that can mill out a piece of copper. I also don't have ready access to a machine shop that would be willing to do it for me. They also have been making the designs better from an iterative process (not a scientific one), so I'd have to take the time to find a good design (and make sure it doesn't leak when I put it together). The waterblock is the one thing I couldn't do by myself when watercooling, and I really did research to see if I could. So I don't think $40 is too much to pay for a piece of milled copper if it is something I couldn't do by myself without hours and hours of work for a probably bad result.
ummmmm... they didn't go out of business, they were bought out. And you can still buy "new" units. Or by "new" did you mean updated in the last year? You can go to their webpage and buy a new unit. They just haven't put out a new model in some time. I just gave my 4504 to my dad (since I am now using DirecTivo) and hate every minute of TV without auto-commercial skip. If I ever go back to cable, I'll probably take the replaytv back from him. That is, of course, assuming I don't go HD.
Look, take it from a guy with a masters in aerospace engineering... the difference between a rocket engine and a jet engine is where they get their oxidizer. A jet carries its fuel and pulls oxygen from the air to create a propellant, then it combusts the two after a pressure differential for greater exit velocity (this incluedes a scramjet). A rocket carries both fuel and oxidizer and either combines the two in a varying ratio like a liquid engine or has them precombined like a solid. A jet needs exterior oxygen from the atmosphere, while a rocket can work anywhere. The other reply to your post got modded as redundant, when it should be informative. Just wanted to make sure nobody else thought you were correct.
BTW, the idea that a jet creates a pressure differential to move it is very quaint; thanks for giving me a chuckle. That is how a wing gives lift, but it isn't how a jet works. Granted, if you didn't ignite any fuel in the accelerated airstream in the engine you might get some acceleration (never looked into that, but it sounds plausible), the majority of the force comes from expelling mass at high velocity.

Maybe gamers like YOU pay $500 for a card and trash it 6 months later, but intelligent gamers pay $200 for a card and then resell it for $100 two years later.
"The next FPS down the pike will make my PC a paperweight..." You are kidding, right? The latest FPS that came down the pike was HL2, and that is playing great on my my 2 year old, midrange for the time system. I would bet the next game that comes out will be fine as well. The only game that has come out that doesn't play fantastically on my 2 year old midrange system is Doom 3. It is still playable (how hard is it to render black at 30fps?), though not as crisply black as a system that costs 4x what I paid. When that next FPS does come down the pike, I'll buy a $200 card that will play it great and sell my card for $100.
You, sir, are an idiot. Are you seriously trying to bring up TCO in the debate over console vs PC?
Let's see... I paid $180 for my current video card 2 years ago, and it plays all current games rather well. If I wanted to buy an XBox back then, I would've had to pay roughly the same price. The way the computer gaming industry is going, I won't have to upgrade again for another year or two. That will be about a $250 upgrade for one of today's $200 cards + a new cpu. Do you think the Xbox2 or PS3 will be $250 when they come out? Did you upgrade the xbox/ps2 with the Live/Network adapter, dvd remote, memory cards, extra controllers, HD output cable, etc? And heaven forbid the dvd rom in your console dies. Yes, you can replace it, for a cost; but I have so many friends who didn't know that or had to pay $90 for a new drive, since not every drive is supported. "hooking it up to the TV, popping in the game and playing." This is fine until something breaks inside and you can't fix it or upgrade it.
Next issue is your bitch about drivers and patches and options. First off, I haven't upgraded my drivers in 6 months or so and didn't notice any change at all when I did. It also takes all of a few minutes to do that. Next up are patches: how often do you get a patch to a console game? Huh, the answer to that just might be never. Your console game has a bug? Too freakin bad, but at least you don't have to waste time fixing it. There are few times when I've actually wanted a patch to a PC game, but I was forced to do it by the servers. These games are continually getting better and more balanced after feedback from players, as opposed to console games that are locked into any imbalance that existed at release time. Finally, you mention game options. Are you a complete moron? You have to set up the same options in a console game as in a PC game (almost all PC games have roughly the same control options). If you have a weird setup, like me, then you just change it and forget it; but the same is true if you have a weird setup in a console game.
"Sure, there's a better interface and higher resolution." That's exactly the point. They look and play a ton better. The best res you'll ever get from current gen consoles is 1280x720, or whatever 720p is, from a select few xbox titles. Even next gen is still going to be locked into a max of 1920x1080 interlaced. Last gen PC games had better res than that. Not only that, but in order for a console to play at those resolutions, you have to upgrade to new hardware... unless you already have a $1000 TV that has a lower resolution than my 10 year old, $250 monitor.
The interface is an even bigger factor for me in why I don't buy a console. I play the games I like so much better with a mouse and keyboard and absolutely cannot play a game like Halo with a controller.
"most game makers now develop for consoles first" Yes, the version of HL2 on xbox is amazing... oh, wait, there isn't one yet. There are also no versions of Battlefield, Doom3, Far Cry, World of Warcraft, Everquest2, Starcraft 2, C&C:Generals, etc. Yes, there are many exclusives for consoles that I'd love to have (Burnout3 and any Gran Turismo game), but there are a lot of PC exclusives, too.
There are reasons to go for both consoles and PCs, and neither is better than the other. It all comes down to what games you like. I'm boring and play exclusively FPS games, so PC is my only choice. I love racing games, too, but I'm not going to spend $100 on a used PS2 just to play the very few games I want from it (and at a much lower res). My friend, however, loves games like platform games and fighters, so consoles are for him.
That's funny, because a few days ago when the first story came out, going to officeupdate took you to microsoft downloads and downloading updates asked you to verify your valid windows version... now when I go there it doesn't.
That's why I said all that stuff because it was true when I tested it. I wonder if they realized they might get sued for it.
I don't think it's about either, because it isn't. I just wrote windowsupdate in response to what he wrote. Windowsupdate and Officeupdate both lead to the same place when you aren't using IE.
Read this post where I explain: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1406 40&cid=117 80685
They are locking people out of Microsoft Downloads, which is where you have to go if you don't have IE and want to update either Office or Windows.
Both of them use microsoft downloads if you aren't using IE.
"From this summer onwards all users of Microsoft Downloads will be required to validate using either an ActiveX control or a standalone tool."
This is what people have to use if they don't use IE... go to windowsupdate or officeupdate in firefox and see where it takes you. If you want to update Office under Wine, you have to go through this validation process (which is what this story is about). Actually, none of the links or even the blurb mention windowsupdate or officeupdate... I was just replying to what you wrote. Either way, if you are under Wine and go to windowsupdate or officeupdate, they are locking you out. So what I said is still valid: this is about locking out legitimate Office users.
It's been awhile since I messed with Wine, so I don't know if it can run IE or not.
Windowsupdate updates other things besides... wait for it... WINDOWS!
If you had bothered to pay any attention to what was being talked about, you might understand how stupid your posts were. Microsoft is under no obligation to keep your emulators up to date. That is correct. They are, however, under obligation to keep your Office up to date. Whether you are running Office under an emulator or not shouldn't be a factor if you legally paid for Office. You paid for their product and service, so they should keep you updated just like the rest of their legitimate users. This has nothing to do with installs of Windows and updating them... Wine makes it so you don't have to install Windows. This is about not allowing emulators to fully run their other, non-OS software.
They are excluding a specific set of legitimate users who should have the same rights as other legitimate users to lock out a competitor. This has nothing to do with fighting piracy; it is purely about anti-competitive behaviour.
Maybe you and the rest of the sheep on/. are going to line his pockets for the crap he spews, but I am not. After stupidly allowing my hopes to rise for ep2 and it turning out to be just plain awful, I vowed not to do it again.
And that's a good thing, too, because I have a friend here who has read the script (living in Los Angeles has fun side effects like that). He recounted the entire story to me, and let me tell you how awful and superficial it sounds. It has very little character development, gives no good reason for Annakin to turn to the dark side, and has no surprises a 4 year old couldn't guess.
What a freaking asshat. They have been doing this for many, many years. And it isn't just AA or the US govt; it is all countries I've been to and on all airlines.
It can be used for many purposes, from emergency contact info (very useful when I was in India around the time of 9/11) to verifying that you are going to leave the country when you say or locating you to get lost luggage.
This dork needs to read a little bit before opening his big keyboard, and the editors need to do some research before posting such a stupid story.
From what I remember reading yesterday, there is a hack you can do to get auto commercial skip into the newer series RTVs. I have the older series with it already in, so I can't test it; but it sounds like it involves opening a shell in the RTV and flipping a flag.
The trick used to be hitting stop twice to completely stop playing the disk, then either hitting play or menu. This would bypass autoplay for those dvd players without that option. Shrek 2 doesn't even allow this trick. There is no way to get to the menu or to play without the damn ads.
Can you make a comic where Fruit Fucker and Div have some sort of homoerotic encounter? Or maybe one where they go out drinking and get in a bar fight with the Punctuation guys.
Seriously, though, at least once a week you make (completely correct) jokes about how bad the journalism is in gaming mags: IGN saying a game is great and giving it a low score, Gamestop saying a game sucks and giving it a high score, etc; do the authors or editors of those mags ever write you angry letters about it or *gasp* ask for your help in making their criticisms more customer oriented?
What idiot freakin moderator modded the parent overrated? Are you fucking stupid? How can it be overrated when it was never rated in the first place?
So maybe it wasn't all that funny, but that isn't the same as overrated... if it were modded Funny and you didn't agree, then maybe you can mod it down. Modding is supposed to encourage good posts, not discourage average posts. If you had RTFRules for Moderation, you would understand that.
Ummm, this doesn't sound all that different from their last Re-launch. I was a subscriber when they were $9.99/month for unlimited downloads, and let me tell you how much I loved that (and how much stuff I downloaded). I am not a fan of this new model, but that might be because I already downloaded 8 gigs off of them for about $50.
Their selection is a combo of new, indie artists and great old jazz artists. There is a lot of techno, too. If you are into jazz or techno, or just like listening to interesting indie bands it is worth it.
This story, though, doesn't sound like anything more than a PR dump on the/. crowd, but I never looked too closely at their third incarnation (the flat monthly fee was their second). This new launch might be different, but it sounds a lot like the last one.
I have both a RTV and a Tivo. I can tell you that every single time I use the Tivo I wish I was using the RTV. RTV is about a thousand times faster for how I watch TV.
You have no idea how amazingly wonderful the auto commercial skip is until you experience it. You just sit there and watch TV. No fast forwarding, no grabbing the remote, no anything. It's like watching a video versus watching the same movie on network TV.
The other thing I like about RTV is the speed of the GUI. Although Tivo watches normal TV faster, the GUI of recorded shows is so much faster and more efficient. I don't watch much live TV, so the GUI of recorded shows is more important to me.
The only reason I have the tivo is because I have directv, and the only reason I have dtv is because I want the NFL package (only avail on dtv). Tivo also records at a much higher quality, so that is nice (straight D-D instead of lossy D-A-D).
Some have mentioned the season pass manager on Tivo as better than RTV, but I liked how RTV managed. It would do season passes over all channels instead of just one.
Basically, the Tivo is like a set top box to watch TV, while the RTV is more like a computer used to archive TV. Computers are fast, efficient and customizable, but they aren't as user friendly.
Here is a story on IMDb about Lucas and his thoughts on Hollywood: post at IMDb
Choice quote from the master of looks over substance: (Hollywood is) "making hugely inefficient movies for great amounts of money and they aren't creatively very interesting."
I wonder if the people who say one thing and do another (like Lucas and the Douchebag of Liberty, Robert Novak) realize they are doing it or if they truly think they are special and doing the right thing.
Yeah, I wrote, emailed and called her office in regards to this INDUCE act about a month ago. She/her aids wrote back saying that she supported a strong defense against piracy and believed that it is good for the consumer to stop piracy.

In the words of Stewie: "Ha ha ha! Oh gosh that's funny! That's really funny! Do you write your own material? Do you? Because that is so fresh. You are the weakest link goodbye. You know, I've, I've never heard anyone make that joke before. Hmm. You're the first. I've never heard anyone reference, reference that outside the program before. Because that's what she says on the show right? Isn't it? You are the weakest link goodbye. And, and yet you've taken that and used it out of context to insult me in this everyday situation. God what a clever, smart girl you must be, to come up with a joke like that all by yourself. That's so fresh too. Any, any Titanic jokes you want to throw at me too as long as we're hitting these phenomena at the height of their popularity. God you're so funny!"
Even worse (for your "joke") is that most reviews show that Doom3 is GPU limited until about the very top end of cards. A nice card with a 1GHz cpu will do close to as well as a 2GHz.
Well, it's hard to take anything from someone who doesn't know how to spell scary with more than a grain of salt, but that is beside the point.
Maybe if you actually DID touch ATI with a 10 ft pole, you would realize that there really isn't anything terrible about the ATI drivers. I have had my 9500 Pro for a year and a half and haven't had any problems at all. I even convinced other users who had the same misconception as you about ATI to get the card. They are now ATI users who bought the next gen cards. The drivers were messed up years ago, but people like you still propagate the myth that they still are. I'm sure there are still driver issues out there that I just haven't run into since I only play newer FPS games (cracked HL2 runs nicely, as does Far Cry and Call of Duty).
Now, I did try to use the card under Linux when I bought the card. I never got the ATI drivers to work AT ALL. It used standard X drivers fine for 2D, but I couldn't play any 3D games. They might be better now, but I haven't tried in over a year. Really, though, Linux right now just isn't the right tool to use for playing games... and I wasn't very disappointed, since I didn't use Linux for games.
You really shouldn't insult something when you have no idea what you are talking about. It's the same kind of attitude managers have when you try to convince them to use GPLed software.

From what I remember reading yesterday, there is a hack you can do to get auto commercial skip into the newer series RTVs. I have the older series with it already in, so I can't test it; but it sounds like it involves opening a shell in the RTV and flipping a flag.
Try doing that with Shrek 2.

/. crowd, but I never looked too closely at their third incarnation (the flat monthly fee was their second). This new launch might be different, but it sounds a lot like the last one.
Their selection is a combo of new, indie artists and great old jazz artists. There is a lot of techno, too. If you are into jazz or techno, or just like listening to interesting indie bands it is worth it.
This story, though, doesn't sound like anything more than a PR dump on the
I have both a RTV and a Tivo.
Here is a story on IMDb about Lucas and his thoughts on Hollywood:
post at IMDb
Choice quote from the master of looks over substance: (Hollywood is) "making hugely inefficient movies for great amounts of money and they aren't creatively very interesting."
I wonder if the people who say one thing and do another (like Lucas and the Douchebag of Liberty, Robert Novak) realize they are doing it or if they truly think they are special and doing the right thing.
Yeah, I wrote, emailed and called her office in regards to this INDUCE act about a month ago. She/her aids wrote back saying that she supported a strong defense against piracy and believed that it is good for the consumer to stop piracy.
I think the more important question is whether you really need to see every zit on a porn star's ass.
I really hope the mods realize their error and set this as overrated.
He said MOST applications, and you mention ONE application. Yes, that is almost funny. It isn't, but it's close. He was trying to make an insightful post and you just bring up a WAY overused joke that is close to the topic. Well done.
In the words of Stewie:
"Ha ha ha!
