And this is yet another myth. Java is NEVER used by any seriou scientist. Why? It's to slow. When your application is expected to run for weeks/months/years at a time every clock cycle matters.

Java is perfectly fine and well suited for what Java is good for. It is not now, nor will it ever be, a scientific programming language. That isn't a slight against Java. Christ you can probably write games in Java now..and the speed would be fine. But sometimes you need every last bit of speed possible...you know like the function were you have to write inline assembly to maximize usage of the SSE3 registers?

I guess I just tire of the C++/Java speed debate. In the real world if you need speed you use C/C++ combine with inline assembly. That's just the way it is.

Better idea. Come up with something you are very interested in and design, impelement, and test it all by your self. Use as few libraries as possible. Make sure the project is a LARGE one comprising several hundred thousand lines at a minimum. That is how you learn. Pick something that you have no idea how to do. Then go learn it. Sure you won't implement the worlds greatest CADD program your first time through, but you will learn so much more than you ever would just working in a large team that is developing a CADD program.

After about a year into your project you will likely know more about CS than you ever did as a student. Now when you have a job working with experienced engineer types you will have the ability to very quickly assess their decisions and understand why they are choosing to do something a certain way. You won't just by a code monkey to them.

Plain and simple: Code more get better. Code harder more challenging projects and get better faster.

I've met good hackers and good CS graduates. I've met crappy hackers and crappy CS graduates. This is going to piss the parent off, but by far the best programmers I have ever met were hackers first. Sure they went on to get a degree in CS, but they are great because the love to code. All the fancy classroom training in the world can't make you good unless you have an internal drive to just learn it.

War is wrong and evil...but to argue that war is always avoidable is to ignore all of history. Oh...and Iraq was not stable before we went there. More stable yes...but not stable. The problem with us Americans is our "Right Now" mentality. It will likely be 10-20 years before Iraq is truly stable...that's what it took for Japan.

The reality is we are there now and we HAVE TO FINISH the job or....yeah guessed it....more terrorism from those who had their country rippied apart by Americans who then deserted them. So get over the fact that we are at war and start excepting the fact that we as a people have an obligation to make sure those people have something left. Let's not just pull out and bring our boy's home...there are other peope involved.
