    No, seriously... using a smaller "universe" so they can test "real-world" while still using only 68 parameters (sic)...

    From the "radiations can be harmfull" department, I know a few green-minded persons that will be very happy to get that material, because they are concerned with what radiations are imposed on their bodies by high-tension electricity pillars and sometimes by the nice, esthetical RF cell-phone towers.

    It's not to be alarmist, but those towers do emit a LOT of radiation, and some effects have been seen on animals (notably, chickens that were rendered sterile, i.e. the eggs never completed maturation, and you got 100% carcass-in-an-egg where you should have had a nice yellow piping bunch of future chickens)

    Maybe to shield ourselves, schools, nurseries, hospitals...would be a good idea.

    I can have my cell call rerouted to my land line automatically nowadays,so this is no real problem...

    As for the rest, constant exposure to radiations of any kind can be harmfull...

    all I lack in ly ancient Palm Vx is a hard drive and somewhat longer battery life... then it could do 99% of what a laptop does...

    => with the new Hydrogen cells, maybe the pda will benefit from the crossing of PDA+Phone+Multimedia player, and I can have a 400Mhz Xscale with 40Gigs hdd +triband/wifi-bluetooth and a week power with a simple lighter fluid refill...

    More than the end of pdas, we should see the end of laptops!

    Chemical company, has a big, proprietary machine specially made to run some simples mixes-and-test in an automated manner.

    Damn thing breaks, refuses to start the procedure...

    reboot gives nada...oki, I have to move myself to that lab and see for myself.

    80186...yuck...Dos...yuck...
    No doc, cryptic error message from the (also) proprietary software...

    Call the company that made this (still exists ! yeah !!!) and they tell me they don't have ANYONE in their organisation that has any sort of experience with that old beast... and that If I am ready to wait, they can have the documentation out of deep storage in just under a week...YUCK!

    BUT !!! they also have a name and phone number in their file about a guy that seem to be a specialist on the hardware...
    Maybe there IS an IT Gos somewhere, smiling at me...?!?

    After a quick phone call, I have some shocking news :

    1/ The guy is dead (god bless...) at a nice 85.

    2/ The guy was the former head of the Lab...yes, the Lab I was trying to service. He took retirement some 10 years ago, and was kindly making maintenance to his former company, being the one that ordered and used the machine in his time...

    ordering a full replacement machine is in the 5 zeros order....

    => I now have a nice undergraduate CS Student that is building an interface with a more modern machine (PII something I found ready for the trash bin), using Linux and the docs that came from the builder...

    It might even have a GUI 8)

    from my point of view, it's wrong both ways.

    But then, it's not the french that have the habit of getting LARGE administrations suddenly having no use anymore trying to get something else to do (Foods and Drugs from Alcohol Prohibition to Marijuana/drugs chasing with black helicopters (just after invention og Nylon; Hemp-fiber replacement from Dupont, well, you know the story) CIA after USSR breakdown -thousands of spies having nothing better to do than smoke Marij** sorry, sidetracked there, and so on)

    So, it's wrong both ways. and the US do it badly quite often. Like when they spied on some UN representatives...

    At least the frecn don't write goddam books about it ....

    You can update your Windows cd so that it install directly with the latest service pack/patchs...

    the how-to for doing that is on the net somewhere, mostly command-line the last time I was looking at it, but damn usefull...

    Alas, as a parent says, most "normal" users will never use it... They would have to know there is a command line thingy in XP first...

    A GUI'ed tool to create such cds would be good for karma, anyone has a link ?

    Also, Ghost is no freeware...an almost ideal tool, except it doesn't boot from cd anymore, you have to install on Windows first, then make a ghost... sad...

    I heard there was a few linux cd distro doing just that, imaging and recovery... again, anyone has links ?

    As we all know, computers, aren't meant to be in the hands of users, but strictly confined to (some) admins.

    There is a solution that any knowledgable admin can use : whenever a new service pack is out, you create an updated Windows installation cd (or dvd) that include the latest service pack => When reinstalling, you do that from SP4k or whatever, and it gives you an nice, almost secure config to start updating from...

    Also, a standard practice in my home is the use of Ghost just after the installation of all the basics softwares and updates...=> ditto.

    Now, a solution I have personnaly used on a friend computer after the usual "crashed before it even updated" episode : I booted her compuer using knoppix, downloaded the latest service pack and quite a bit of separate updates on a separate partition and then made an install without the net on...Ironic, using Linux to get a windows install running...

    Also (but that is only true on my own home network) I use a dedicated firewall (yeah, Linux) on my network, and I only keep open the ports I need...So, if I need to make a "virgin" Windows install, the firewall protects me from the nasty worms/exploits/whatsoever...

    Repeat after me : No Lusers in my Computer room ! 8)
    (Happily supporting my dad since Windows 3.11, I made my preceding comments a rule... backup often, streamline your updates, use a dedicated firewall...and NEVER let your dad (or any Luser) with a root/administrator account...btw, he's still using 98...

    2/ I build then host a worm with an IRC channel collator thingy, cauz it's leet
    3/ the Worm has an automatic time-to-live that limits it's duration on any of the infected hosts, ie uninstalling itself after, say, the cleaning of the computer, a scan/cleaning of the local network and an additional limited scan of the open space IP adresses
    4/ The worm @ Microsoft scan perpetually the net in search for new computers to heal for a certain lengh of time, then is removed because all the systems in the world are patched (lol) and is replaced by the new cure for the next problematic issue
    5/Profit! (this IS slashdot) in term of decreased TCO and nice press releases.

    Are you happy now, or do you also need proof of concept code ?

    A worm doesn't HAVE to be perpetual, as we recently saw with self destructing worms. /sarcasm Another solution would be a Windows Worm that automatically logs on the net, downloads then install Debian, OpenOffice and all free oss equivalent softwares to the ones the user had on his hdd, providing him with a superior OS, a better patching management and a litigation from SCO /sarcasm

    Must I add another Profit! line somewhere ?

    Well, first I think I said it in my previous post, so thanks for emphasis.

    secondly, just to give more clarity, maybe someone with the right skills (Microsoft itself ?) could use this and program a nice, non destructive auto-patching worm.

    Don't discard the solution because it has failed before...just learn from the errors and do it better this time....

    nope.

    With him in Jail, you just have one (more) guy in Jail.

    Educating users, making them patch regularly, etc + having a clean system will do the trick for more security.

    Also, using worms to auto patch the damadged and damadging machines would be ultimately the nice, if illegal, solution...

    I know this has been debated before, and that having another can of worms spreading could do some damages, but it would be faster than waiting for all the people in the world to patch their systems...and keep the initial infection at bay, a bit like your own body reacts to intrusion.

    but then he have GIE Cartes Bancaires (you non french imagine a company that have ALL banks as customer, plus most card security related, and that for most of Europe and the part of the civilized world that have a data chip and a pin code with their cards, as in cell phones, etc...) and his affair escalated to the "high" (dope suspected 8) levels of executives from the financial (read, we got the money, we own you...) world.

    And I think the Humpich case was a gross injustice.

    (detail of the technical flaw, for this is Slashdot, after all : the last 4 or 8 digits of the "I don't remember how long,search for yourself's" code were...0s. Making the Credit Card encryption testing (brute-force) a lot easier.

    Since then, the problem has been fixed, and almost all the old card have been renewed, so this technique is no more as usable...

    And he DID use the card, even if it was only for 2$ of metro tickets...which is what lost him in the end...

    Here we have someone that have proof that someone is a liar, and is calling it out loud.
    And a Bully, that might have been smart by trying the Hard Legal Way.

    This one is against a "small one", so I think he stands a good chance if he makes a good case and some fuss...Especially as in France, we don't really have that much "Attorney General" thingy, with pre-trial, auto-guilty for cheap resolutions.

    Also, if you have to, explain very simply what you did, use Powerpoint or OOO a lot and help them understand of what you made, and show the international and national organisations that do just what you do...exposing flaws so they can be corrected, and, if the bad coder doesn't fix, tell the world so people can be aware of the risk they have wrongly feeling safe and having paid for it.

    Also, the part about Publicite Mensongere...
