  1. Re:Hacking And Overclocking - What? on Hackers On Atkins · · Score: 5, Insightful

Gluconeogenesis takes pyruvates and oxaloacetates and converts them into glucose. You get these through catabolism of amino acids, chiefly from muscle tissue. The muscle is broken down and transported to the liver for gluconeogenic processing. Alanine, cysteine, glycine, serine, & threonine can be deaminated directly or indirectly to form pryuvate and asparagine and aspartate can be made into oxaloacetates.

Hey, that's great that you remember your high school chemistry, but the clinical data don't support your theory. Atkins focuses on foods hight in fat & protein, so there's always enough protein intake that the body does not need to break down muscle tissue. This has been gospel among body builders for 30+ years. Low-carb diets preserve muscle mass moreso than low-fat diets, and the fat loss compared to low-fat is probably more significant than current studies already indicate.

I've been fat all my life, peaking at 277 lbs eight years ago. I just finished my first year on Atkins. I'm down from 244 to 187 (that in the first sixth months actually), the same weight I was a as a high school freshman (15 years ago). Now that I've broken my carb addiction I've added healthy carbs (whole grains, vegetables, fruit) back into my diet. It's been a year now and I haven't had a donut, french fry, or any sort of sugar or junk food. My triglycerides are under 80. Is your diet that healthy?

Does anyone own a Zaurus? How useful are they really?

If you've never owned a PDA, you'll probably think the PIM functionality is top notch. If you compare it to any other PDA it loses. It's got a very nice keyboard on it, but the PIM interface is so horrible in that you have to switch between keyboard and pen constantly and you can't search for anything, so why bother filling it with pages of data.

Palm had it right. User interface matters more than anything else. WinCE and the Zaurus are about taking the wrong OS for the job and needing overkill hardware just to keep it from being a tremendous dog.

I'm an MS-free Linux guy, but unless there's a cool PIM or you want to show off for your friends, this thing doesn't belong in your pocket. I thought it was cool to write a perl script to search the PIM databases, until I realized my buddy with an original Palm Pilot could still save & recall phone numbers faster than I could.

If you want a Zaurus, get it off ebay at a discount... lots of people are coming to the same realization I did.

  3. What about the apps? on Zaurus SL-6000 Prototype Revealed · · Score: 1

The coolest hardware in the world is worthless unless there are decent apps for it. I had a Zaurus SL-5500, and although the hardware was cool, and you could run ssh/apache/frotz/whatever on it, it sucked as a PDA because the included apps were lame. I got the PIM apps from TheKompany, and they sucked too. I loaded OpenZaurus and it sucked. Then I ebay'd it and went back to a PalmOS device (the only worthwhile PDA OS I've ever used, and I've used them all), now I'll be happy for a few more years until the new kickass Clies are cheaper.

It's fun to have a PDA you can tinker with, but unless it can save time as well as waste it, the hardware is irrelevant.

Executing on a business plan is called execution. It's a standard business expression, although a tad dot-commish.

'Execution' is a word executives use to divert blame from themselves. If a company or team is unsuccessful, "poor execution" is the reason, even though a bad or unrealistic business plan may have been at fault.

When an executive says from the beginning that execution is the key, it means the business plan is shaky. If he actually had a good business plan, he would have said something that sounds like "we can't lose."

  10. Atkins secret: blood sugar management on Getting Back Into Shape While At The Office? · · Score: 1

Yes, excess carbs do get turned to fat. However, so do excess protein and excess fat. The difference is that carbs and protein are 4 cal/gram, while fat is 9 cal/gram. You do the math.

Protein and fat do not raise your blood sugar levels, causing your body to produce insulin. Many people produce too much insulin, driving down blood sugar, causing tiredness and hunger. The "secret" of the Atkins diet is blood sugar management. This cannot be overstated. The Atkins diet is a low calorie diet, but you're never know it because your stable blood sugar means you never feel hungry. You plan a healthy well rounded menu until you're blue in the face, but if you're hungry all the time you will always fail to stay on it. Atkins works because the food you eat is satisfying and your stable blood sugar keeps you from feeling hungry.

Bottom line is the Atkins diet is dangerous, containing way too much saturated fat, cholesterol, and calories from fat, and too much protein can be bad on the kidneys. Eat a balanced diet low in simple carbs, substituting complex carbs instead, and you'll do well.

The Atkins diet is extreme, and extremes can be dangerous. There's no question that being fat is dangerous. If you're concerned about Atkins, check out _The_Good_Carb_Cookbook_ or any number of diabetic cookbooks which place emphasis on food with a low glycemic load (do not cause blood sugar to spike).

For what it's worth, I've lost 54 lbs. on Atkins, had no complications, and cut my triglycerides from 131 (desirable) to 76 (really desirable), and my cholesterol is under 200. The fact that I got there by eating steak and buffalo wings ought to tell you that the conventional wisdom isn't necessarily right. Currently I eat a more traditional "healthy" diet with lots of fruit & veggies, but no starches or sugars, and I've never been healthier in my life.
